GD Old-Timey Member Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Thank you SpeedyGose. And no, I won't be starting my own blog. I have been following a player, Brenden Kalfus, who was drafted by the Blue Jays in 2013 and looks to be an exceptional hitter. Someone started a thread on him after the June draft called The Official King Kalfus Thread. He won the west coast conference division 1 college batting title along with several other athletic and academic awards and hits from both sides of the plate. I saw that a friend of his is Patrick Wisdom, a 1st rounder for the Cardinals. I don't give Klaw or others like him much credibility when it comes to predicting how great a player is to become. No person can know that. Historically, what matters most is the players will to win, their ability to adjust and their will to work on their weaknesses and make them their strengths. I see both Kalfus and Wisdom as having long careers in the MLB regardless of what Klaw or others think. Dogg, can you keep it in the Kalfus asylum? Thanks!

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 I'll care when he adds impressive control and/or command Amen to that
bluejaysfan Verified Member Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 I'll care when he adds impressive control and/or command C.C.Sabathia also lost a lot of weight. His velocity is also down to 88 on his fastball. I agree with you in that control and command are most important.
IowaJay Verified Member Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 Any reports from spring training games out there? Matt has pitched a couple live batting practice sessions, one intersquad and one minor league game against the Yanks team. I don't have specific numbers but, he felt good about the outings and the results.
IowaJay Verified Member Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 He really doesn't know anything yet. My thinking was if they used him as a starter in the spring he would start in Lansing. If he was coming out of the bullpen I thought maybe Dunedin. They are preparing him as a starter, so I am guessing Lansing. I have no real knowledge to base that off, so take it for what it is worth.
topprospects Verified Member Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Nevermind, I didn't find anything. Do you know if he's starting in Dunedin? "King" - the Blue Jays haven't been in a single playoff game in over 2 decades! (22 years and counting) - not even a wild-card game. So, where players are placed following spring training probably has little to do with their talent or their performance and more to do on what our scouts project them to be. As a result, we really have played any meaningful games in a very long time. Slugging the ball is not the Blue Jays weakness - and its also not the way to get to the post-season. Go Jays.
topprospects Verified Member Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Matt Dermody was one of our top performing draftees from last season, especially as a college sign I'd like to see him challenged with Dunedin. What do you think? I agree with you "King." Dermody was college sign (like Kalfus) and has a solid record of putting up consistent numbers in college and in Vancouver. Coming from good programs is like high A or AA ball. Successful college players have already proven that they can handle traveling, academic demands and are stay focused and perform regularly at a high level (equivalent to AA). The Jays tend to undervalue their college draft picks (as opposed to how the oakland A's have a history of highly valuing their college picks.)
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 That's what the short season leagues are for, to give college picks a place to play without having to disrupt your already playing full season league teams with a bunch of guys that probably have pitch limits for the rest of the season since they've already played a full college season.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 In other news, Osuna threw his first bullpen session since TJS today! He's progressing nicely. Might be back by the start of short season or the MLB allstar break, and then probably sent to the AFL for some more innings at the end of the season. With picture
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Man, that camera angle for Sanchez rocked! Really cool to see the ball move from almost the point of view of the batter.
mlbprospects Verified Member Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 AA "Aaron Sanchez will start the year in AA New Hampshire" No surprise here and he is the #1 rated blue jays prospect for the second straight year. makes you wonder where the other prospects will end up and why they will end up there. its good not to rush players to quickly. i really do think it matters where the start, but it matters how well they progress and how much confidence and support they are given.
flafson Verified Member Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 That's interesting, almost all his pitches has late movement to them. He should probably just aim to the middle of the strike zone and let the movement do the rest. Talking about Sanchez.

Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Chase DeJong is headed to Lansing. Given his refinement, DeJong should have good chance that he pulls a Hutchison and blasts through 3 levels.
