What are you expecting from Archer this year?

I can understand why some people don't buy in on Archer, but after watching him pitch, I really like him. He's got heat, a filthy breaking ball and a plus changeup, and he's just a nasty motherf***er on the mound. He's also got a nice GB rate. I like the swagger and the competitiveness, and I like the Rays ability to develop pitching (and Molina). I was also really impressed how he cut his walk rate at the major league level, that's a lot easier said than done. I think he'll give me 170 IP in the 3.50-3.70 FIP range, and I think he'll emerge as a SP2 type over the next few years. Maybe an A.J. Burnett type career.

I also think it's a weak draft, and I doubted that I'd get a pitcher with as much upside at #14. I'm sure roster crunch was also a consideration for you.

OT trade question in my salary league.

Would you trade Domonic Brown ($0.5M in 2014; ARB 2015-2017) for Mat Latos ($7.25M 2014, ARB 2015) or Mike Minor (0.5M in 2014; ARB 2015-2017)?

Thanks.

So I finally landed a top starter.

To Dinger: Shin-Soo Choo (MLB) + Luis Heredia (MiLB) + Waiver #73 + MiLB #53 + MiLB #71

No No49: David Price (MLB) + Waiver #94 + MiLB #100 + MiLB #114

Wow, I like that WAAAAY better for Dinger

It makes a lot of sense for the Pharm. Choo can be replaced with Crisp, and we had way too many OBP-oriented players. Choo's .400+ OBP ability is a real asset, but it was getting wasted with Mauer, McCutchen, Fielder, and no OBP sinks. Runs too to some extent. We also needed a starter badly, and wanted to get a bit younger (even if Price is a not-young 28). While I'm worried about Price's Ks and possible lack of a Molina, I think he can become an elite K/BB (i.e., Cliff Lee lite) guy, making up the loss in K and ERA. We're very happy to welcome David to the team.

The market seemed to dictate that Price was the more valuable player, and I can buy that, but I'm very glad to land my elite CF, a position that was very weak for me. And next year, Choo still plays nicely as just an OF, when I presume Torii will retire.

I still like Price and I think Jfas is low on him though.

So basically Dinger moves Freddie Freeman for Choo. Not sure I'm feeling this for him. There's a 7-year age gap there.

No doubt I took on some age here, but CF was a weakness for me and 1B/DH was a strength. I prefer to take Freeman out of the equation altogether and think of this as:

Buxton + Crick + Glasnow + some late picks for Sale + Choo + Ortiz + Heredia + those pick upgrades from No49.

I actually really like Price, but Choo basically puts up plus fantasy numbers in every single category, and there's no reason to think that he won't make enough emergency appearances in CF to maintain eligibility there for a few years. Add in the upgrade in MiLB draft position etc, and I like this trade for you far far more.

That would be really nice. He just needs 10 games or 5 games started per season. Leonys Martin has a major platoon split, so it's quite possible.

In my mind I chose to keep Chris Davis over Freddie Freeman for the long haul. Miggy will probably also lose 3B eligibility next year, so I was either going to trade Freeman now, or next off-season. I think Choo is a better fantasy player in this format than Freeman for the foreseeable future, and I wasn't going to acquire a better CF than Choo (good luck getting Trout, McCutchen, or Cargo).

Yep you've been in on Choo for a while. You just needed to come into contact with the right starter, and Price was that. Players with broad skillsets get underrated in real baseball, and for some reason that carries over to fantasy. Choo contributes in all seven categories, he allows you flexibility in your other offensive slots... and he's elite in OBP and runs. I just ran up against an OF and OBP logjam.

What I'll say about Price is that he still has elite velocity and the 95.5 from 2012 is more of an outlier than the 93.5 from 2013. If he averaged 94.1 in 2012 (in line with his previous averages), it wouldn't look like such a sudden drop in 2013. Plus, even with the new data you have to be careful about assigning to much to one year. His peripherals were just fine from 2010-12.

My favourite part of this is that No49's farm is basically just Matt Davidson, with no 1st or 2nd round pick in the draft this year.

That is a bad farm, bottom 3 for sure.

I was actually surprised to see how many mid-round picks I have after this deal. I thought my farm was a lot more depleted than it is.

I will trade Michael Bourn for literally anything. A rebuilding team could turn a nice profit if they send me a late pick for him and he rebuilds enough value to sell off during the season.
Posted
I hate to pump his tires, but I absolutely have him on my watch list for the waiver draft.

Also: same deal with Nick Markakis. Contract year!

It's looking pretty likely that I'll be cutting Bourn, Cishek, Balfour, and Street. It's not ideal, but that's the nature of this league. I hope to get at least one of those closers back in the Rule 5.

Posted

I'm not really cutting much of substance. Maholm, Raburn, Grant Green, Tim Collins, etc. No legitimate veterans.

Dinger, maybe you could trade some of your better players to open holes for some of those guys? I don't know. Seems like a lot of lost value.

Posted

I'm trying to go 2-for-1 or 3-for-1 on an end of roster player, but it's easier said than done. Even rebuilding teams are attached to the guys they have.

The ironic thing is, I was the one who insisted on 20 man rosters.

North, trading a better player to keep a worse one is cutting off my nose to spite my face. I'd rather stack the Waiver Draft so I have a better chance at getting one back at #14.

Posted
The downside of a stacked roster.

I actually don't mind that, I consider it socialism. I'd rather lose a couple rosterable players than have a team so stacked that rebuilding teams want to quit the league.

Posted
Street sold to King Kat for a mid-round pick upgrade. Suddenly I'm getting a ton of offers on these guys... I guess everyone was waiting til late in the game to see how their rosters would shake out.

I have a load of starters that I gotta cut down. Just in case someone wants any of them for a draft pick or pick upgrade.

André Rienzo

Jeff Locke

Josh Beckett

Colby Lewis

Dustin McGowan

Matt Magill

Tommy Hanson

Tyler Thornburg

Álex Colomé

Yusmeiro Petit

I can't believe cuts are only like 4-6 weeks away. This offseason has gone by fast for me. I guess it's because I'm still always looking at the docs/teams. It's never like a true break for me.

I'm going to Europe for 2 weeks, so I'm planning on getting mine done a bit early.

So you traded Choo because your team is too awesome. Only you, man.

My offensive situation made Choo somewhat expandable and I was in desperate need of a top starting pitcher. I don't think either of those statements are reaches. Am I not supposed to like transactions that I make? Why would I make them then lol.

Who cares, it's fun rebuilding squads as well, although your point is very valid.

I really only care about the next three years. Who knows if this league will even exist beyond then?
