Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Meh, if Giolito doesn't become even a 4.18 FIP pitcher, I'll be very surprised.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 2, 2015 Author Posted September 2, 2015 Which trade was worse? James Shields for Yordano Ventura and Lucas Giolito (2013) or Evan Longoria for Noah Syndergaard and Tyler Glasnow (2015) In context, #2. When you traded Gio he was still a long way off, not nearly the asset he is now. But I still expect Syndergaard to blow out his arm and Longo could/should bounce back.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Nice cherry pick What am I cherrypicking, exactly? Shields is a ~2 WAR player this year, not setting the bar very high for Gio.

Oh, idk...his FIP during his worst HR/FB rate of his entire career which is totally unsustainable. Don't mention his very good swstr or decent xFIP/SIERA.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 I really don't care what numbers you use, Giolito will be much better than whatever Shields is this year.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 ...and the beginning of the declining velocity That 1.37 HR/9 is totally unsustainable! Even though he posted rates of 1.30, 1.17, 1.19, 1.50 in previous years and lost 1.2 MPH off his heater this season. I still like Shields and I think he's a fine pitcher, but he's by no means great this year, whereas Giolito has the tools to be a generational pitcher.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Cool, just like Dylan Bundy and Tyler Kolek. Lol Tyler Kolek was never in the same tier as Bundy and Giolito, now you're just reaching. Bundy got decimated by injuries, it happens.

I really expect Shields to become Mark Buehrle somehow. The guy was shut down 2 weeks early in 2007 and hasn't missed a start since. I can see him still throwing 200 innings when he's throwing 88 MPH in 2 years.

I just think Gio is going to be a lot better than what he is now, obviously.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 2, 2015 Author Posted September 2, 2015 Wow, Joey Votto's numbers have really exploded. Could be a career year. It's funny how much attention Miggy gets as the league's best hitter when Votto has a better career wRC+.
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Man, what happened to Evan Longoria? He's basically replacement level now. Longoria isn't interesting at all in a 20-team league anymore. He's a lower tier starter at this point. He's Chase Headley.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Votto is indeed studly, and that's even more amplified in this OBP format. He could very well carry you to a championship.
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Wow, Mark Trumbo has been the 242nd most valuable player in standard yahoo leagues!

I was reading somewhere on FG recently (maybe a chat) about how we underestimate the % of players that peak around 26-27 and start declining there rather than at 30, like we typically expect.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Wow, Mark Trumbo has been the 242nd most valuable player in standard yahoo league! Evan Gattis #176 NIKKAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 2, 2015 Author Posted September 2, 2015 The 3B crop turned over so quickly. Gone are the days of Miggy, Longo, Beltre, Sandoval, Aramis, Zimmerman, and Wright. Here is the era of Donaldson, Machado, Bryant, Frazier, Arenado, Seager, and Carp.

Laika Community Moderator Posted September 2, 2015 Author Posted September 2, 2015 yeah him too. also Turner.

Peak in real life, or peak in fantasy where we don't take defense into account?
