Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 BP has had some really flattering pieces on Lorenzen lately, one (I assume retarded) scout was even quoted as saying he likes him better than Stephenson now. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/images/headshot_68444.jpgReds Double-A RHP Michael Lorenzen: "Lorenzen immediately jumps to the top prospect in the Reds system for me. The stuff was unreal, and I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone improve so much in one offseason. His 50 command will be his weakness, but he has really improved since last year. Elite athlete, too. Saw him hit one off the top of the wall and bunt for a hit. Didn't think he had a chance to stick in the rotation, but now I’m convinced." Michael Lorenzen, RHP, Reds (Pensacola, AA): 5 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K. Reports coming in on Lorenzen have ranged from good to great, but there is no doubting that he has made significant improvements this season and the possibility is growing that he could remain a starter after it was once thought that he was surely destined for a bullpen role. Redraft of 2013 1:20 Detroit Tigers Actual Selection: Jonathan Crawford Re-Draft Selection: Michael Lorenzen (2013 no. 38 pick) Reason: Entering last year's draft, Lorenzen was seen as a sure reliever, but the Reds saw something others didn't, and he looks like a solid bet to stick in the rotation. After seeing him in Pensacola earlier this year, I would agree with the Reds’ assessment and view him as a hard-throwing righty with mid-rotation potential, and that's a first round pick. – Mark Anderson Stock Analysis: As mentioned above, Lorenzen isn’t the pure reliever some pegged him as out of college, so his stock is seeing a significant rise. If the former Titan continues the path he is on, the Reds (and Mark) will be getting a steal. Michael Lorenzen, RHP, Reds (Double-A Pensacola) In last week’s “Scout Quotes” article, it was mentioned by one industry source that Lorenzen had jumped to the top of the Reds system, above the mighty Robert Stephenson, one of the top right-handed arms in the entire minors. While I absolutely disagree with the opinion that Lorenzen is somehow a superior prospect to Stephenson, the reports so far this season have painted a much more pleasant picture of the former supplemental first round pick than I witnessed in camp. At the time, I thought the 22-year-old arm was highly athletic with an electric fastball, but I thought the delivery was stiff and the secondary arsenal underwhelming. It was a reliever all the way for me, an opinion that bordered on consensus at the time. Fast-forward a few months and Lorenzen’s developmental progress is slowly winning hearts and minds, and several sources see not only a future starter but one with impact potential. I think the major-league outcome is still very abstract, as the delivery has some red flags that could limit effectiveness in longer outings; stays tall and stiff, with a deep ball pickup and rigid arm action. The command is below-average at present, and even though he can comfortably pump his fastball in the 93-95 range, he struggles with control when he overthrows in the elite velocity range. The slider could be a money pitch with big velocity and some tilt, the changeup has improved dramatically from what I saw this spring, and he’s even mixing in an occasional curveball to keep hitters off his high-intensity offerings. As a reliever, Lorenzen could eventually lock down a late-innings role and develop into a lethal setup option at the highest level. But his real value could come in a rotation, a projection that most doubted at the start of the day but one that is looking more possible with each passing start. –Jason Parks
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Lorenzen looks like a studly pick. Probably would have taken him in the first round had I done more research.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Yeah your Matt Olson pick sucked. So boxy. I know, bro. He's no Kaleb Cowart or Mike Zunino. Can you imagine if he had some better BABIP luck, though? People would be heralding him just like Joey Gallo except more handsome.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Yeah, Dinger, now that I think about it. Why did you take Weisenberg over JBB, JF, JK, KM, CC, or any of the other hard signs?

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Yeah, Dinger, now that I think about it. Why did you take Weisenberg over JBB, JF, JK, KM, CC, or any of the other hard signs? Like I said, I've read that he could be a future Top 5 pick. There isn't much high end talent left on my board, and most of it is in rookie ball and hence just as far away. I'm not that interested in taking a back end starter or non-impact OF. Also, I didn't put a ton of effort into my draft board.

BTS Community Moderator Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Good lord, my offense is getting violated by North.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 I can understand the Weisenberg pick, but it'll be very hard to trade him and that's why I wouldn't have done it. There aren't regular rankings of players in draft classes two and three years down the road, so to trade him you'll have to do a bang-up job convincing your trade mate that he's worth acquiring.
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 12, 2014 Author Posted June 12, 2014 Good lord, my offense is getting violated by North. The True Cards seem to be insanely schedule overrated right now. Record: 83-46-11 Place: 3rd overall Matchups: Lost to - Twist and Trout, Butt Stallions, War Puigs, Tied: Slayers Losing to: BALCO Beat: Burrito, Lyon, (insert penis here), THB, Elder Kats, Taijuan. Have you beaten a truly good team? Maybe not.

I'm thinking Dinger's plan is to roster him until he gets taken high, if he gets taken high, then sell him for a good piece in a few years as his team ages.
BTS Community Moderator Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 f*** me, Ramos' hammy has him on the DL again. Pitching gets healthy and now 4/9 of my starting lineup is on the DL. Not that it really matters in Gyorko's case I guess.
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 12, 2014 Author Posted June 12, 2014 Probably a good thing that Jerk-o is on the DL.
BTS Community Moderator Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Probably a good thing that Jerk-o is on the DL. Meh. The more PA the better. I need to figure out what the f*** to do with him.
TRM Verified Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 I wanted to try this in the BBDL before I reread the rules. You could nab a top 40 guy like JBB or JF (initials just in case) really really late and hold on to them through college and potentially roster a future first rounder. What's the rule on this in the DDL? As an example, I have Ryan Boldt on my ML roster right now, and he's going to be a first round pick in 2016 more than likely. Did I just out myself for breaking the rules? Admittedly, some teams farms can't afford to hold dead weight for 3 years and wait, but it makes sense for my current situation right now.

BBDL draft is after the signing deadline.

torontofan Verified Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 So to confirm, it is totally OK to own a drafted and unsigned guy? Ya, the Ass drafted Bickford last year. Also I take Gabriel Guerrero.
TRM Verified Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 yup Lovely. Thanks. Ryan Boldt better be a top 10 pick in a couple years.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Ya, the Ass drafted Bickford last year. Also I take Gabriel Guerrero. I drafted and subsequently dropped Okey.
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 12, 2014 Author Posted June 12, 2014 Ooo wait. Not sure if that's cool. Kind of a gray area that hasn't been touched. The whole owning unsigned guys thing really only applies to current year picks that end up not officially signing. At least that was my general understanding. Hmm. Might need a rule tweak. At some point. It's an hour past my bed time though. Zzz.
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 12, 2014 Author Posted June 12, 2014 Rereading our rules and I think Boldt is clearly ineligible. Sorry.

Basically, the rule should be you can draft a player in a year which he is drafted (signing pending), or someone already signed and with a MiLB organization.
