Ya the hit was fine

I broke my jaw once. Had it wired shut for a month. Was one of the worst experiences of my life, lost like 20 pounds

It was a good (but unfortunate) hit.

Yeah clean hit, he put himself in a vulnerable spot. Smith took out 2 players with that hit, Foligno broke his finger fighting him... :P

Pretty big trade last night, don't often see recent high picks swapped like that.

Apparently Philly offered Cutter to MTL for the 5th overall pick in last years draft. Really like it for Anaheim, they have some solid young defencemen that made Drysdale expendable.

Yeah the Ducks were definitely building towards making a deal like this at some point. Just weren't going to have room for Mintyukov, Drysdale, Luneau, Zellweger (likely ready by next year) all to play an offensive, puck moving game. Always seemed likely that one of Drysdale or Zellweger would get moved for a big forward piece.

The timing just sort of caught me off guard, seemed out of left field at first but makes sense upon further reflection. The Flyers have quietly been contemplating moving Gauthier ever since he wouldn't report to their summer prospects camp. The nail in the coffin came when he refused to meet with their top brass during the WJC, then went on to have a big tournament bringing his value to a peak. Drysdale has also looked really good since returning from his latest injury, so at this point I can understand why both teams felt more comfortable/excited with what they were receiving.

There were some question marks about whether Gauthier belongs at center but that's no longer an issue, as his natural fit for Anaheim would be as a big scoring winger for Carlsson, McTavish or Zegras (if the latter stays at center himself)

Isn't the question whether or not Cutter will sign with a team or play 2 more years in College and become a FA?

Without him flat out stating it, Ducks GM Verbeek basically implied that they were given the chance to discuss that with Gauthier's camp. They must have felt pretty confident in signing him before pulling the trigger for that price.

It sounds like part of the divide between the Flyers and Gauthier was that the kid wanted to sign right out of the draft in lieu of going to college, and then again at the conclusion of his freshmen year last season. No doubt wanting to start his FA clock and just begin making money in general. The Flyers insisted he stay in school for further development and he stopped taking their calls. So as long as Anaheim is willing to sign him after his college season and play him in NHL games this year (thus burning a year off his entry level contract), I have little doubt he'll be happy to sign. Apparently Briere was given a list of 18-20 teams he'd be willing to go to anyway.

Oof...

He's a scrub and shouldn't be getting top 6 minutes.

You also thought Grant Fuhr was 6'7". So... You're wrong.

I didn't think that. It was listed on his hockey card.

Worst part is that it's the same thing over and over. A combinations of Blowing multi goal leads...Playing down to their competition...Not taking advantage of teams when they're facing adversity...Weaker D than you want to see in a serious contender...questions between the pipes...no killer instinct....get pushed around...etc, etc, etc.

They have stretches where it looks like they overcome one or more of these issues...but eventually, they slip back into poor habits.

We've been talking about a lot of these issues for years and years...not new problems.

I don't understand why teams coast when they have a lead. You can clearly see it when it happens. Lazy bastards.

It's who they are. This isn't a new thing...they don't have it in their DNA to play a full 60 or impose their will on teams they should be beating consistently.

It's probably NOT a lack of effort. I would not assume that a group of NHL players just does not work as hard as other groups.

It probably just looks like a lack of effort.

I bet their offense is easy to counteract or adjust to in games, or something like that, so they are tactically prone to getting shut down all of a sudden.

This is why the teams who are consistently good on defense or in a two-way sense, like Boston, just look "better" on an ongoing basis than the offensively focused teams like EDM or TOR.
