I was watching the end of this game last night and couldnt even think of the words to describe how bad this was from Matthews. It sends all the wrong signals about what he is as a player. Can he score? Yep. But there's no hockey "soul' present.

I don't follow hockey much - but I don't understand this. Don't Boomers miss the good old days when teams had a couple of goons (who couldn't skate or play hockey) who would always stand up for their top players? Isn't there a large group of people who think hockey is too soft and s*** now and that players should police the game themselves? Don't they want that random Philly guy (and everyone else in the league) know you better not f*** with Matthews or they'll f*** you up?

Did Wayne never get pissed off at someone and slash them a few times and then sit back while Semenko filled them?

Or are you happy with the way hockey is played now (like I am) and would rather Matthews be left fighting his own fight if he wants to cross check and slash a player because he can't control his emotions? I love that fighting is essentially gone from hockey now. I think Bunting and Gio should have stayed out of it. People lose their temper like that in sports all the time without throwing punches.

Being a non fighter is not the same as having no fight. The body language here is pretty damn telling. Everyone else on the ice is desperately moving about trying to defend their teammates, and he's just standing there like he's afraid to chip a nail. You don't have to drop the gloves and start throwing haymakers but at least grab someone and even out the numbers. Maybe he'll mature out of it but he really just seems like too much of a diva to ever be the emotional leader of winning team.

I personally still hate this mentality in hockey. How many times a game do people all have to grab each other, push each other around and yell and chip one another? It's so childish. So much toxic masculinity. It's a hockey game - not a war boys. Why is it part of hockey and not football - when in football, you literally hit each other and try to tackle them on every play.

Hockey was 1000x better when there were huge hits and hip checks and fist fights all the time

The sport sucks now and there is no tension most of the time

Watching a sport that is literally known for this stuff and then complaining about it, is complete Karen behavior. Not to mention the fact that these scrums absolutely happen in football and even baseball for that matter.

Besides, there are universal concepts at play here. I don't care if it's professional hockey players or school children on the playground. If you start an altercation, have your friends all pile in to have your back, and then stand there while they are out numbered - you are a coward.

You know damn well that it's complete bitch boy move by Matthews. Hockey has provided more than enough actual opportunities to complain about toxic hockey culture, no need to go reaching.

I’m fine with Matthews not fighting. Last thing the Leafs need is him injuring his already surgically repaired wrist punching Konecny. He’s been throwing the body around a bit more this season which is nice to see, but he’s more likely to beat you on the scoresheet than in a fight. This coming from a guy who enjoys a good ol’ Donnybrook.

Agreed. While I know it looks bad on Matthews but just think of the reviews that would be floating around if he f***ed up his wrist or blew out his shoulder from falling on it. Everyone would be calling for his head. I dunno it’s a personal opinion I guess.

Why would I defend that, he's been doing this laugh and giggle s*** since he's been in the league, he's big and strong enough to take care of himself, he's a pussy? You idiot.

Leafs needed that or else...

Since that West Coast trip, they have 6 games till next Saturday, that's the rope I give them to see if they turn this around, so far so good. 1-0.

Ditto, the last thing they need is a Matthews injury, but the smiling and getting rag dolled needs to stop, he could clinch on and take someone himself, there's no need for him to fight.

Nah, it's not a "fight or don't fight" thing, it's the standing there and watch with "i dont care" attitude while everyone else jumps in to make sure you dont get hurt after he was the one who went after Konecny in the first place to start the entire thing. If a guy is going to skate after a guy, crosscheck him good up high, and give him a few stick jabs and then just smile and watch while other guys jump in and not even try to intercept 2 other Flyers who were trying to get in on his teammates... that's the problem. If you start the problem, ya gotta at least grab someone and skate them away from the pile.

What he did is tell his team that he has no problem with stick work until it comes time to get physical, then he's going to back down and let someone else possibly get hurt for him. It's not a good look for a supposed team leader.

Yeah he doesn't need to be dropping the gloves, or at least not with any frequency. But he can at least show that he gives a f*** about his teammates and has a bit of fire in his belly.

That said, almost every other superstar in the game (Crosby, Ovechkin, McDavid, MacKinnon) has dropped the flippers at least once, even just to show the rest of the league that they are not going to be picked on and to show their teammates they have their backs

I'm not so sure I agree with this. Yes, I once did love that aspect of the game and if there wasn't a fight or two in the game I was watching (whether it was the NHL or the OHL) then I was disappointed, but I do really enjoy the actual skill that's in the game now, the speed in f***ing incredible and I've grown to appreciate the removal of goons/enforcers and fighting in general. I'd be OK with a few more hits, but given how fast they are going out there, I can see why it's not a big thing anymore.

As a father with kids in hockey - I'm really happy the game has moved away from what it as in the 90's. Back when I played, people would go out on the ice with the sole purpose of trying to hurt other players and I think that's just generally BS. I think it's progressed in a positive manner.

The peak of the NHL was when Patrick Roy fought Chris Osgood.

There are a f***ton more scrums in hockey than in any other sport - most (all?) are pointless and stupid. I don't disagree about altercations and having your friends back. I didn't realize the Leafs players were outnumbered - I agree Matthews should have at least grabbed a guy and stood there pretending like he was going to do something (like what happens in most scrums). I may have over reached on this one. Good call.
