Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 They are, but his advanced stats crush the hate. He an excellent puck mover and a his blunders are bad. Problem is, people take one side or the other and won't accept that Gardiner is what he is. You're gonna get some great puck movement but when he makes a mistake, it's bad. He can be both good and bad, folks.

Brian McCabe was another guy with good stats who made big blunders again and again.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 Sounds like a shortstop with great range who makes a lot of errors because he touches the ball more than other shortstops. Except this shortstop can make bad errors even when he doesn't touch the ball.

No he doesn't have great range. Gardiner has slowed down so much he gets beat all the time. A baseball comparable would be Miguel Andujar in his decline years.
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 The hate for Gardiner is mind-blowing. Leafs fans are garbage.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 The hate for Gardiner is mind-blowing. Leafs fans are garbage. I don't hate Gardiner. He is what he is. Not the first defenceman with defensive shortcomings.
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 Focusing on his "defensive shortcomings" does amount to hating on him if you're not willing to admit that he's a good player all things considered. You said above you would not want him on the ice in the third period of a game 7. Basically, your judgment of him is clouded by an irrational focus on whatever "defensive shortcomings" you perceive.

Nah my judgement on him is he is a flawed player. For which there is plenty of video evidence. If Gardiner is traded before the deadline for a pick, which I hope the Leafs will be a better team. Won't have to watch a d-man with multiple passing options instead try to skate through the other team, resulting in a giveaway and almost the tie goal in a 5-4 game. If Gardiner wasn’t on the Leafs other fans would be salivating at the chance of signing him to a contract this July. He’s an offensive d-man that moves the puck well which is a plus in today’s NHL.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 They will get that chance. He's in his decline years. Best move for Leafs would be to get Pesce for Johnsson, then move Gardiner for a pick.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 That's overbearing. It's true though. If you're gonna compare baseball to hockey... You can make a ton of mistakes not touching the puck, like poor coverage. It's not just coughing up the puck like bobbling a grounder.

Unreal, the flak he gets... https://www.corsicahockey.com/nhl/players/nhl-player-ratings-rankings

The reason why he gets so much hate is due to his tendency to make mind-numbing decisions with the puck, even though he does a really good job with the puck most other times. As Steve Dangle puts it, there's Good Jake and Bad Jake. lol
Horses Fart Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2019 Posted February 10, 2019 Let’s go Leafs. I f***ing hate the Habs.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2019 Posted February 10, 2019 Gee. A one goal game with Montreal? That never happens.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2019 Posted February 10, 2019 I still don't see this? Well...I can't help you with that. He has zero confidence with the puck in his own zone and takes too long making decisions.

Perspective is something, I hope you don't decide on contract.
