BTS Community Moderator Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 So does anyone know if this guy is actually a smart statsy guy, or was he just given the title of stats guru AA-style by the media because he's young and said analytics are cool?
Slot Machine Verified Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 LOL. Don't ruin the dream. Not yet.

What Jared did was force teams to use one of their top two lines against him and the Gaudet line. This allowed us to play Tolchinsky-Miller, Speers and Michael Bunting versus the oppositions so-called bottom 6 where we found a great advantage. He knows his s***. I follow him on Twitter (he made a few suggestions to Steve wrt dCorsi in the past), and he does actually have a huge interest in analytics and its application.

I'm really hoping he's actually dumn, because I hate the leafs with a fiery passion.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 (edited) so what are the buds looking at this year? Kessel-Bozak-JVR Lupul-Kadri-Santorelli Booth-Kormarov-Clarkson Frattin-Kontiola-Orr/Mclaren ex: Holland, Orr/Mclaren, Bodie, Smith Phaneuf-Robidas Polack-Gardiner Franson-Rielly Bernier Reimer? meh Edited July 23, 2014 by Dylan
havok24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Peter Holland should not be an extra on that roster.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Peter Holland should not be an extra on that roster. Agree 100%, but I'm thinking like Randy I'm hoping along the lines of Kessel-Bozak-JVR Lupul-Kadri-Santorelli Booth-Holland-Clarkson Kormarov-Kontiola-Frattin
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2014 Author Posted July 23, 2014 If we're looking at this idealistically: JVR-Kadri-Kessel Lupul-???-??? Booth-Bozak-Clarkson Frattin-Holland-Santorelli ex: Smith,Kontiola Phaneuf-Gardiner Franson-Rielly Polak-Robidas Bernier/Reimer Not much left in FA. Maybe sell everything for Kane or sign Penner or d'Agostini or Malone for the wing. No idea what to do about centers though. When will Nylander be ready? lol
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 That roster is... not very good. Not Ottawa bad, but not good.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2014 Author Posted July 23, 2014 It has potential though. Like, it's the kind of base that, while a challenge, could be molded into something nice. Our core (JVR/Kessel/Kadri, Reilly/Gardiner/Franson, Nylander, Bernier) is young and our bad contracts (Bozak, Phaneuf and Clarkson) are all guys that have whatever that mystical quality is that attracts stupid GMs. Maybe Phaneuf could be moved for a good C. Like, those three are just so overvalued, it's great.

Just based on prospect pedigree plus his numbers in the AHL, I feel like he could amount to something decent if he gets consistent minutes in a top 6 role.

There was a thread on HF like 10 games into his Leafs tenure in which Leaf fans were pretty much unanimously in agreement that they had found their 2nd line C going forward.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2014 Author Posted July 23, 2014 Then maybe find a fringe 2nd/3rd line center and mix him and Holland and move Phaneuf for a forward instead.

That's apparently Bozak's future role on the team when they find a suitable replacement at the 1C spot. Got to replace that Kadri kid though.
Nox Verified Member Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 The Leafs did something not overtly stupid. This is disappointing to me.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 That roster is... not very good. Not Ottawa bad, but not good. Ott roster isn't even really that bad. The defence is pretty scary especially with Jared Cowen but the forwards are a nice collection of talent with the potential to be very good. Found it interesting that Dumbas got all the front office staff with the Greyhounds to read the Extra 2%. Seems like a very smart man who is not just a numbers guy.
RIPEXPOS Verified Member Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 That roster sucks, particularly on D, Leafs should be tearing the roster apart and tanking. the 2015 NHL draft is going to be epic, and has the two best prospects hockey has seen since Crosby. Habs are looking good, and should be for a long time- assuming Subban can get locked up. Jiri Sekac is going to be an absolute beast for us, can't wait to watch him play for real.

Are you talking about the sens roster or the leafs? I think both are bubble playoff teams. Leafs D at least has a few puck moving defenceman that have good talent but it will be up to the coaching staff to install a system that brings it out.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 I am really excited to see the Dallas Starts this season. Have a ton of offence and if their defence and goaltending can be good this is a team to watch out for.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 What's the going rate for a backup goalie nowadays? 2.3M for Reimer seems like an overpay to me. Budaj was a great backup for the Habs last year and made almost a million less. I guess it's not that material.
labadee Verified Member Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 it's a fair deal, though if i thought that budaj wouldve been a viable option had the leafs shipped out reimer in the offseason
Horses Fart Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Leafs sign Daniel Winnik to a 1yr contract.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Leafs sure have solid 4th line depth, lol I don't mind this signing, but I'm all for tanking this season.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Author Posted July 28, 2014 Yup. Need to capitalize on the idiocy of other GMs. Most ideal thing that can happen is Bozak getting moved to a stupid team (Canucks? I've heard Linden really isn't all that bright), Clarkson getting moved to a stupid team coughTHEOILERScough, and Phaneuf being moved (Panthers?). Get a high draft pick, clear out cap space, maybe go after a Ryan/Krejci in UFA, and start building a contender for real with Dubas at the helm.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 The Toronto Maple Leafs and defenceman Jake Gardiner are reportedly closing in on a long-term deal. everyone hold your breath
