These signings and trades coming in today are retarded! The Clarkson signing is near the top of most foolish. Why sign anyone for 7 years? The guy flukes out and scores 30 goals one season (on a like with Ilya Kovalchuk). You could put a bag of pucks next to Kovalchuk and 30 goals would bounce off it.

f***ing awful. Nonis has made all the wrong moves so far in his short tenure as Leafs GM. Buying out Grabovski to use those funds saved to bring back an inferior player in Bozak? God what an idiot.

You should probably stick to baseball. Clarkson was the one winger I thought the Leafs should target, the term is long but that's the only way to sign guys for a reasonable AAV. I was happy to hear the TSN panel agree with me today, I am curious to hear what Doug MacLean thinks as he's a big Clarkson fan too. I was worried the Leafs would go after Weiss, thank god they didn't overpay for him.

I mean it's kind of embarrassing that Grabo managed to outproduce Bozak at ES, despite him (Grabo) having inferior wingers, less offensive zone starts, and facing a tougher QoC almost every game.

 

They buyout Grabo and used those funds to bring back an inferior player?

I liked Silfverberg, but Bobby Ryan has proven he can score 30+ and we'd be hoping for the same from Silfverberg. As long as Ryan gets extended, this is huge. And I say that as someone who's been pretty critical of Brian Murray. Ryan could pot 40 if Spezza's back holds up for a full season.

 

I was so close to buying a Silfverberg Jersey too! I think the wildcard here is Noesen. He is the type of player you want in the playoffs and he is 1-2 years away. I really hope that doesn't bite us in ass and he turns into poor's man Corey Perry.

Not really. Since the 08-09 season (since there is only a 2 month difference in age between them, age isn't a major factor):

 

Clarkson: 0.25 GPG (0.907 G/60 at EV adjusted for ZS), 0.605 A/60 (0.259 First A/60), 0.43 PPG (1.51 P/60 at EV adjusted for ZS), 17.602 iCorsi/60 after ZS adjustment

 

Grabovski: 0.27 GPG (0.907 G/60 at EV adjusted for ZS), 1.210 A/60 (0.870 First A/60), 0.61 PPG (2.12 P/60 at EV adjusted for ZS), 16.634 iCorsi/60 after ZS adjustment

 

While Clarkson has slightly better puck possession numbers with a poorer SH% than Grabovski, the two posted the same goal rate and Grabovski was far and away better at passing the puck to his teammates than Clarkson. Before you ask about teammates, during that time-span, the majority of Clarkson's time was with Elias and Zubrus/Zajac (very close in TOI) while Grabovski's time was with Kulemin and MacArthur. When you consider that Clarkson's contract is only $250 K cheaper than Grabbo's was, there is no way you can say that Clarkson is paid exactly how he should be while also saying that Grabovski was overpaid.

 

Also, technically, the Leafs replaced Grabovski with Bozak, who is a far inferior player relative to Grabovski it's not even f***ing close.

I didn't want them to go after Weiss, either (reminds me too much of Tim Connolly), and I would have been fine with Clarkson at a slightly cheaper and much shorter contract. 7 years for someone like Clarkson is WAY too long.

Do all your stats take into account the intangibles Clarkson brings over Grabovski? These are big things in hockey that are much less important in baseball. Clearing the ice, intimidating opponents, etc.

Clarkson is a far more useful player than Grabo, I don't know how you idiots can argue that. Grabo is too small and doesn't clear any ice for his linemates- if he's not scoring he is basically useless IMO. Listen to the TSN and SN panels, not saying they know everything but they likely watch more hockey than anyone on this forum. One guy I respect is Doug MacLean, he has been praising Clarkson for a while now. They think it's a good signing- personally I do think the term is too long but they get a top 6 forward who is the type of player Carlyle likes.
