You're severely underrating Martinez IMO. If you were dealing Bautista for Lynn and Martinez you would have to view them both as at least #2's going forward. Martinez has a mid-90's FB with the ability to hit the upper 90's coupled with plus breaking stuff. The command has never been a concern and IMO the only real question mark as a starter is how durable he will be. Perhaps you don't think he has the physocal strength to pitch +200IP but he definitely has the stuff to be a top of the rotation pitcher.

I can understand that, Profar is definitely the type of player you don't want to let slip through your grasp. That being said this rotation needs a lot of help and it appears like the only thing STL would move their young pitching for is an equally young controllable SS.

 

From a Jays' perspective both Martinez and Lynn are pre-arb controllable players. Moving Bautista for two pitchers would shore up the rotation and in the proposed trade save the club $13M immediately. If that money were to be re-invested it would help this team a lot. ie) Lynn + Martinez + McCann ($13M/yr contract) > Jose Bautista.

Why do people keep thinking the Rangers need pitching when they have Ogando,Feliz,Harrison, etc,etc?

 

I don't think too many of us are confident they are all decent starters going forward. The rotation is looking pretty thin if the BP is unable to step in and pick up innings next season.

Brewers pick up Aoki's $1.5M option for 2014

Brewers exercised OF Norichika Aoki's $1.5 million club option for the 2014 season.

It was a no-brainer at that price. Aoki has hit .287/.355/.399 with 18 homers, 50 stolen bases and 161 runs scored in 306 games since signing with the Brewers prior to the start of the 2012 campaign. The 31-year-old should be a solid fantasy outfielder again in 2014.

 

Ya, no brainer. I doubt he'll be a Brewer past the deadline but a great contract and trade chip for MIL though!

I probably am. I haven't watched him a ton and besides having a good fastball and he's short I don't know a ton about him and I readily admit that. Now I've seen him pitch but not extensively. My main concerns are just the fastball plane and the strength to pitch 200 IP+ as most concerns with those of diminutive stature on the mound are, I don't really have anything specific to just him.

 

But if a guy has question marks health wise I don't think we're the best fit for him.

 

Fwiw, Steamer has Lynn at like 2 wins next year, idk if "at least" a #2 is the best label. I would say Lynn is more of a solid #3/nearing #2 type.

He put up 2.7 and 3.3 WAR in his first two full seasons respectively, with all due respect to Steamer that seems awfully low. Looking at the projection it is for 134IP which is abnormally low. The projected peripherals of an 8.75 K/9, 3.35 BB/9, 1.27 WHIP and a projected FIP of 3.46 suggest he will be worth more run value than 2 wins.

Ogando - better out of the BP, never thrown a full season as a SP

Feliz - has never thrown more than 70IP and that was in 2010

Who cares about his fastball plane when he doesn't throw anything straight, his stuff is filthy. That kid is awesome, but than again his arm can explode and turn into a pumpkin.

 

If you think Stroman can stick as a SP then there is literally no reason to not be all aboard the Carlos Martinez bandwagon. Same age, Martinez is taller, has less to prove and has overall better stuff.

They have the hard parts out of the way: a 1-2 punch of Darvish and Holland plays against any team in the league. With a reliable workhorse #3/4 they'd be set. Actually, Buehrle would be a nice fit in Texas.

EDIT: I'm thinking more salary would have to be included by TEX to make this happen. Perhaps Kinsler + Berkman (RH platoon for Lind) for Buerhle, Janssen and Nolin is more reasonable. Considering that TEX has a $12M option for Berkman's 2014 season they may not consider that much value going the other way.

That actually seems like a pretty fair swap. Both players have settled in at around 2-3 WAR. Kinsler is owed $62 million over the next 4 seasons (or 5 years $67 million). Buehrle is owed $37 million over 2 years. Texas gets a workhorse starter who's reliability is attractive with Harrison, Feliz, Perez, and Ogando all being questions for various reasons, and clear 2B for Profar. We get the 2B we've been looking for.

 

The issue for us is that it leaves our rotation paper thin. Pretty much just Dickey in terms of reliable arms.

 

Ya, it would just clear the deck to sign another starter but save ~$2M this season and ~$3M next.

I think it is a deal that they would consider. The only thing being that I don't know if I would want to loose a reliable guy like MB with the state of our rotation right now. You don't know what your going to get from Hutch, Drabek, Morrow (injury wise), J.J (if we do bring him back) and so on.

 

Pitching is not something that I would want to deal away.

In today's edition of his daily column, ESPN's Buster Olney reports (ESPN Insider required) some specifics on the two hard runs the Red Sox took at extending Jacoby Ellsbury. According to Olney, Boston offered Ellsbury an extension that fell just shy of $100MM following his runner-up finish in the 2011 AL MVP voting. Agent Scott Boras countered with a $130MM proposal, and the two sides weren't able to strike a deal. Last winter, the Sox again tried to extend Ellsbury, this time for something in the neighborhood of B.J. Upton's five-year, $75.25MM deal with the Braves (Ellsbury had a down season in 2012, hence the decreased offer).

 

Now, Ellsbury is primed to hit free agency, and reports have indicated that Boston may not go far beyond $100MM to retain him. MLBTR's Tim Dierkes opined recently that the question shouldn't be whether or not Ellsbury crosses the $100MM barrier, but rather whether or not he can reach $150MM.
