Yep. Some people just refuse to accept that there is luck involved in baseball. Probably (maybe definitely) more than any other sport. Except maybe Tiddly Winks. Those things can fly anywhere.

Some people just refuse to do a tiny bit of analytic thinking when it comes to sports and insist of living up to the dumb jock label. Even when they are proven wrong, like they obviously were about the O's, they just move on to some other crap like how the Cards are clutch now all of sudden.

Not really, there's just as much narrative in Football.

For example, this week they(ESPN) were bashing Romo for throwing a late Int that cost the game when in reality, the cowboys would have been blown-out without him.

At least we'll never have to experience heartbreak in the playoffs. :)

Id love to experience heart break in the playoffs, at least it would mean our org wasnt a total s*** show anymore

Well my teams are out .got a Moose ,Caribou ,and a grizzly so i guess i'll go Elk hunting . Can't see myself watching the Dodgers or the Red Sox unless they were playing a team i really liked.

But the best football teams go 13-3 or 14-2 in a season, which is around an 85% win percentage... in baseball the best teams win at a 60% clip. The Broncos are favoured by 28 points over the Jaguars this week... that's crazy and would something similar would never happen in baseball. The Jaguars really have no shot. But the Twins or Astros do have a shot against the Rangers or Tigers.

There may be an equal amount of narrative, but it's clear that baseball is swayed more heavily by luck. That's why they have to play more than 10x the games.

Well they can also afford to play 10x more games because baseball takes by far the least amount of effort to play. I always chuckle when I hear ex players talk about the "grind" of the regular season. Playing a childrens game, flying around the states in first class and eating at fancy dinners, in nice hotels isnt a grind. Walking up at 6 am and booking it on the f***ing ttc to scarbrough for a 1.5 hr transit ride with a 50/50 chance that you'll get stuck next to a guy on the bus who hasnt showered is the defintion of a "grind"

I think there's a lot of luck involved with the NFL with the short schedule and one game elimination playoffs. The Giants in 2007 beating one of the best teams ever and last year with Baltimore winning who wasn't nearly an elite team... those are just two examples of the top of my head.

Really the only league out there where luck doesn't play as much of a factor is the NBA.

Agreed.

And man, two of my three most-hated teams are still in the hunt after tonight. Anyone but the Cardinals or Red Sox, please. Troll Season 2013 marches on.......

Yeah I agree. I don't follow the other sports that much but it seems there's a fair amount of randomness/luck in NFL, NHL, MLB but not in the NBA.

MLB: starting pitchers change every day, and the line drives that are caught vs bloops that fall in make a huge difference. Really is a game of inches

NHL: any goalie can have a good game or bad game, and just random bounces and deflections of the puck matter a lot game to game

NFL: don't know much about this, but the short season probably gives randomness just due to small sample size

NBA: best players play most of the game, and there isn't much of a random element. High possession game means large sample sizes means less flukiness

Tigers Could Listen To Offers For Scherzer This Winter

Fans that are dreaming about a David Price trade after the recent news that he's preparing himself to be moved this offseason can add another name to their wishlists, as Danny Knobler of CBS Sports reports that there's a "very real chance" the Tigers could trade AL Cy Young favorite Max Scherzer this winter.

As Knobler points out, Scherzer is eligble for free agency following the 2014 season, and as a Scott Boras client, he's unlikely to sign a long-term deal with free agency so close at hand. The Tigers are already paying Justin Verlander, Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder $20MM or more next season, and they've committed $12-16MM to each of Victor Martinez, Anibal Sanchez and Torii Hunter.

I would probably step on a lego for Scherzer to be traded here.

Mark Derosa just called Michael Young one of the best hitters in the game. Michael Young.

DeRosa is kind of old school I guess, can't see past Young's career .300 BA

********. He's a overrated hitter (ALA Pillar).

Yanks going hard for Tanaka apparently. Contains a quite odd quote from a scout... (well I guess not that odd as its from a scout)

"He is better than Darvish because he is a strike thrower," the scout said. "Overall, Darvish’s stuff might be a little bit better, but this guy knows how to pitch. He is like Kuroda, he has a lot of guts. He throws four pitches but when it gets to [stone]-cutting time, it’s fastball and splitter."

Did you just seriously compare Michael Young to Kevin Pillar?

Young is overrated but consistently put up 2.5-3 WAR over a very fine career. Career .342 wOBA from a most-of-the-time middle infielder.

I wonder if Kuroda would be interested in coming here on a one year deal (highly unlikely).

Turn Kawasaki into a recruiter please AA. He's so lovable. How could anyone say no to him
