Gibby heading to ASG

AL @AllStarGame Manager Jim Leyland has named @WhiteSox Robin Ventura & @BlueJays John Gibbons to his #ASG coaching staff.

Is that so he doesn't have to take a Blue Jays player? LOL

Honestly, not sure anyone on this team deserves to play in the ASG.

Lind and EE are our best hitters but 1B/DH is so deep and there are so many big-name stars who get votes even if they are not having a great year. (Fielder, Tex, Ortiz, Pujols, etc...) It would be hard for Leyland to take one of them without a huge revolt from Tigers, Angels, Red Sox, etc. fans

Jose and Edwin definitely deserve to be there or at least get consideration to be there. Janssen should make the BP as well. If Reyes was healthy I;d imagine he would be the starting SS as well....

Yeah. Reyes was a lock to the the starting shortstop before he went down. Already a star, having a big year, etc... Really sucks.

Janssen may be the only real choice Leyland has.

We can complain about Bautista's blowups all we like, but he IS 9th in the AL in WAR so far this year. EE is top 30, while 2nd in home runs and 3rd in rbi. I don't know how you can justify either not deserving to go.

Janssen and Jose (reputation and a derth of power OF'ers in the AL) are locks IMO.

Edwin and Jose are both having big years, I think one or both will go. Cecil is also a better option than Janssen, although they do prefer closers.

Chris Davis and David Ortiz > EE and Lind so I can't either making it

Outfield isn't so clear...

As for Edwin, cause of Davis and Ortiz

Yeah that may be just it actually

I can see Bautista making it even though he's only 80% of what he was 2 years ago

Bautista is 2nd in AL outfielders in WAR, he's an easy choice. Janssen is a possibility but he doesn't have the name recognition or a high save total. Edwin won't start but he should definitely be in the mix for reserves. You don't need to act like we're the Astros or something.

That doesn't mean he doesn't deserve to go though. Anyhow, I think Fielder will be more of a block than Davis or Ortiz will, as will Pujols and Teixeira (whether deserved or not). Unfortunately, I think EE is listed on the AS Ballot as a DH rather than 1B as well, which may hurt him.

Gibbons managing definitely up Janssen's and Edwin's chances.

Robinson Cano says Billy Butler again won’t be on Home Run Derby team

The news that Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano would again be the American League captain for the Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game brought a wry smile from Royals designated hitter Billy Butler.

“I don’t think I’ll have to worry about that this year,” Butler offered.

Cano later confirmed to the New York Post that there’s “no chance” that he would select Butler to participate in this year’s Derby on July 15 at Citi Field in New York.

That decision is grounded full in merit, of course. Butler has just five homers this year and probably needs a scorching few weeks to garner serious consideration for a second straight All-Star appearance.

But Canoclearly is still stinging from the reception he received last year at Kauffman Stadium for bypassing Butler for the Derby after indicating his preference to select a hometown player.

The sold-out Kauffman crowd responded with loud boos when Cano took part in the Derby, and it affected his performance — he failed to hit a single home run.

The boos continued the next night at the All-Star Game and again earlier this season when the Yankees came to Kansas City for a three-game series,

“You’re not going to enjoy getting booed,” Cano told The Post. “The fans don’t understand, it was tough

Bautista, Lind, Encarnacion all deserving candidates. But really, there isn't anyone more deserving than Muni. :P

Who's going for the Astros? Altuve? Cruisin' Chris Carter?

Wow, the Rockies are having a really really bad day. Cargo went down, Tulo went down, Fowler went down, Lopez was ejected.

Holy crap. That's 2012 Blue Jays-esque.

Maybe Jordan Lyles! I hear he's having a huge breakout year.

Angels fans are probably excited about the Yanks/A's game--they're in the 14th now tied 2-2.. the reason is because the Yankees will likely burn out their bullpen trying to get through this game.. and they just might!(Tex, Hafner, Youk and Wells are 0-20 today.. the Yanks can't score! Cano is the only one hitting. And Ichiro..)

Terrible news for the Rockies, who have faded after a hot start but are still in the thick of things in the NL West. Tulo has been dealing with rib soreness for a week and had to leave Thursday's game after aggravating the injury. He has had an MVP-caliber first half, batting .347/.413/.635 with 16 homers and 51 RBI. Josh Rutledge will likely be called up to handle shortstop.
