I still disagree but I guess we won't ever really know. Tucker this offseason should be a pretty good comp as their production is pretty similar all be it he's 2 years older.
Kudos to admitting defeat as its tough for some people on this board lol. Yeah I fell victim to Hoffman's first month as well. I think they key is its a pretty long season and its easy to get caught up in the moment. I still don't mind the Giminez deal. He's been hurt which has killed a lot of his season but when he's played he's been a lot better than his numbers would suggest. The team is going to need a SS by next year and its clear Bo can't be one anymore so him moving there should shore up the position. I see him being a 3-4 WAR SS which is honestly good value on his contract.
I mean if he were to have hit FA after next season and put up a similar year as to he is having this year he most definitely would get over 20M a year for his FA years.
I highly doubt he gets 500M guaranteed no deferrals and full NTC.
If you want to take talk about being wrong on contracts looking the mirror about what you said about Kirk not being worth the $.
I still don't see him getting close to that contract on the open market. It's great he's performing well and its not hard to see him putting up a few more 5-6 Win seasons but the questions about signing a 1B with a heavy physique to that long of a deal are still there. There's massive landmine risk with that deal no matter how good he is right now.
Also while you hope he's turned a new corner with his preparation, you hope he doesn't slack off in body wise now that he's got all that $.
Wonder if Bo gets a day off in the field today. Not sure if its fatigue or what but his play at SS has been really concerning the last month or so. He's now at -10 DRS/-8 OAA on the year. Reminds me of Jose Reyes in 2015 where everyone knew it was an issue but because of his "status" as a player they just let him go out and play every day.
I bet 90% of SS make that play,,that's as routine as it gets. Any ball to Bo's right he really struggles on. His arm strength is bad and he is super slow footwork wise getting the ball out of the glove.
Bo has been so bad at SS lately. He's been like -5 runs this last month. There some routine balls he just doesn't have the range or arm or footwork to make.
Yeah that's the thing some people seem to be forgetting. Your overall WAR is irrelevant to what the team is now and how they project in the postseason. Your 5th SP and bottom 3 relievers won't matter much in a playoff series.
Fluharty vs Muncy is a platoon advantage. It was clear after the first batter in 9th Hoffman had nothing. He had walked 2 guys in the 8th and got to 3 balls on Conforto while getting lucky he popped out. Then he walks the first guy in the 9th. Add in the fact he had thrown a ton of pitches to that point and likely was pretty fatigued I don’t see a good argument for keeping him in.
They are honestly lucky he didn’t leave a ball right over the plate and have it leave the yard like what happened against Cleveland earlier in year.
And JS bringing in Straw to PH against a LHP while also bringing in Davis the same inning as defensive replacement made absolutely zero sense. Davis is clearly the better hitter, I still haven’t seen anything on why the hell me made that move.
I agree that managers don’t make much of a difference in the grand scheme of things and JS has been pretty good for the most part this season. But let’s not pretend JS didn’t make some absolute blunders today.
Everyone understands it’s on the players to perform which is why it was clear as day Hoffman didn’t have it at any point in the outing. When you are the manager it’s all about putting the team in the best chance to win.
What JS did at the beginning of the game bringing Varland in was a great move. But you don’t manage the game from the 3rd inning like a “must win” game all to just throw it away in the 9th because Hoffman is your “closer”. There has been more than a few times this season where Hoffman has looked lost out there only for him to implode and give up 4 or 5 runs. It’s August and the team is in a division race, now is not the time to pray a guy is going to miraculously figure it out on the mound.
I’ll say Hoffman has pitched better than his numbers would indicate but when he blows up he really blows up. Hes had a few outings this year that he doesn’t have it and just gets completely rocked.
You gotta recognize that and pull the plug IMO. Varland certainly seems like their best reliever. Hes got that Dawg in him on the mound that inspires confidence and he’s got such nasty stuff.
I agree to an extent but you had to take him out after the walk to lead off the inning. It was clear to anyone watching he didn’t have any command at all today. It’s on Hoffman for not doing the job but you have to have contingencies in mind that’s what a manager does…
Well after having guys on first and second with 1 out and Betts/Smith/Freeman up giving up only 1 run isn’t the worst outcome.
People are s***ing on the pitching but smith and freeman had incredible at bats.
