  1. A couple wins in this series would do wonders to get spirits back up.
  2. Am I the only one that thought Vlad had a chance to apply a tag on that play with Stanton? Seems he didn't even look to see where the runner was.
  3. Another reason to get the 'robo-ump' calling of balls and strikes is the home plate ump would then not have to stand in there close and take the foul tips to the head.
  4. I seriously think I would not enjoy it much, because I know this current Jays team (unlike '92, '93, 2015, '85, '87, '91) is not that good (yet). Lots of young talent here that if all goes well (along with some of the right external adds), is a juggernaut in short order, but not 2020.
  5. It does not much matter. The Jays SHOULD not win, and to eventually become a champion, they are better off taking their lumps in a (Mickey Mouse/Rob Manfred) 1st round loss, than fluking out a win and possibly getting the misconception that they are better than they really are. Lots of work to do here to create a true championship team (but anyone with half a brain knew that back in Feb.)!
  6. NO, triple A: and as Boxcar mentioned, what if he goes there and doesn't do so great!? Lay off the Rogers cool-aid man - it's not good for your mental health! ETA: he needs to get his D at 1B down because I can guarantee it will affect his hitting if he is not confident out there - which he can't be the way he has been playing! WAIT are you saying Halladay was a juicer !!?? Oh do tell your evidence if that is your insinuation!!
  7. Seriously, look up Doc Halladay. He pitched 149 1/3 innings in 1999 (FIP 5.36) and 67 2/3 innings in Y2K ( FIP 6.47) for the Jays at ages 22/23, In 2000 (as most know) was sent to (then Syracuse) to 'work on things'. Interestingly, his numbers at AAA in 2000 look horrible on the surface (67 2/3 ip, 10.64 ERA, 6.47 FIP), but whoever was coaching him then seemed to help get things straightened out and he went on a hall of fame tear from 2001 onwards! Could Vlad Jr. be the position player version of Roy (we can all only wish!!)!!??
  8. ETA: According to MLB.com (and my math) the Jays have given up 279 runs , 238 earned runs = 41 unearned (14.7% of the total). Next worst is Pirates with 31 unearned then Marlins and O's at 29. The 'best' is Twins with only 8 unearned runs surrendered. Talk about f***ing over your pitching staff (and fans)!!
  9. It is anything but 'dumb' to suggest that Vlad's play at 1B is NOT ready for MLB. After today's game, that should be a given. Considering that he is also not tearing it up offensively, a stint back in Buffalo next spring may be very good for the young man. If he goes .900+ OPS and solid D after 4-6 weeks, then of course bring him right back on up. I invoked the late great Doc H in another thread recently, and he (along with Teoscar and Gurriel), flourished after a demotion back to the minors. It's far from the worst (and may be the best) thing that could happen to a 21/22 year old in Vlad's situation. As for this game - HUGE WIN because a win (regardless of how) was critical at this point. But talk about ugly - another 3 errors and 2 unearned runs. I get the feeling that this team must be near the MLB leaders in unearned runs allowed at this point
  10. SERIOUSLY!! In this abbreviated season and with the few historic blowouts the Jays have suffered in the past 10 days starting with the 18-1 loss on Sept 11th (that day which will live in infamy), you want to cite run differential. I know we are not supposed to insult the other posters, but this is almost too much at this point. Give your head a shake man!!
  11. LOL - nailed it !!!
  12. we'll see about the 'money'. cheapening the meaning of getting to post-season baseball may not have the desired effect, because 'casuals' will not get as excited when their home team makes it, since it will become more routine (i.e. may be only a short term boost at best)
  13. I took you for being more astute than that. My mistake. "Main job of the manager is to coordinate the coaching staff, keep players healthy, keep players productive as possible given their talent, put players in a position to succeed. " No, those are all very important roles of the manager, but his most important role is to be a 'leader' and run a professional operation that does not continuously make the same old mental errors, show up out of shape, etc. This f***ing guy is a joke. Do you think Roy Halladay would have put up with Vlad's shenanigans? He would have had that fat f*** down doing 20 pushups regularly until the kid got his head out of his ass!
  14. my preference would be 6 teams in each league make the post-season (division winner and 3 non-division winning teams with best records). The top 2 division winners get a bye while the remainder play the 2020 style best of 3 in 1 location. Then continue from there as in pre-2020 (pre-crazy).
  15. agree that Manfred is an abomination and this 16 team post-season is a total joke, which if they continue in future seasons would do untold harm to the great sport. BUT, why is the 'save' so bad? Is it the concept or more so the current requirements for what counts as a save?
  16. again, while there are similarities numerically, the differences in the talent level of and expectations for the team are totally different. I think any reasonable, knowledgeable Jays fan would have been satisfied with a 80-82 season, and nowhere near 'post-season' play back in Feb. before all the ******** started. You could make a pretty good argument that 2020 has been a big monkey wrench in the Jays' long-term development efforts.
  17. OH YEAH that's actually what I meant. Shapiro ran down AA for trading all those guys away, but none of them, except Syndergaard, has turned into a star. Look at the guys he traded for Donaldson. Prospects become suspects soon enough, including 1st overall prospects sometimes..... You could argue the Jays' trade deadline moves this year were chicken-s*** BS, but I still think they did the right thing to mostly 'Stand Pat' this time. Pat went all in in '92 and '93 and it paid off. Will these 2 strike at the right time and win like he did !?
  18. Daniel Norris, Jeff Hoffman, Matt Boyd, etc etc. I still think they did the right thing keeping their powder dry this time around, but still, the 'casuals' will be out with pitchforks and torches!
  19. Well I did say 'almost'. A couple wins, and I am sure I will be back on the bandwagon, LOL. But seriously, this is a young team that needs to learn from adversity. What is better adversity / learning experience - s***ing the bed completely down the stretch or going into TB and getting their asses handed to them in the 1st week of Oct. ?
  20. I totally disagree that "performance for the rest of the year" has no impact. If the Jays go say 1 and 7 on their remaining 8 games, and miss the stupid 2020 post-season, the PR will be really bad and someone will need to be the scapegoat. Montoyo was pretty much hired to be rolled under the bus at the appropriate time. Shapiro and Atkins better hope some of their pitching prospects that they did not trade for something better than the likes of Ray and Stripling (and Tiajain Walker) pan out and soon!
  21. Yes the current apparent hopelessness surrounding the Jays is very 2016 like. The difference being that was an 'old' veteran team which had been to the ALCS the previous year, while this is a very young team, particularly on the position player side. There is no comparison to the 1987 team that won 96 games despite losing the last 7 in a row, . I think someone already mentioned in this thread, that is more like the epic 2011 Red Sox September meltdown (although that one went pretty much the entire month, not just the final week).
  22. Just from an odds standpoint, regardless of the haplessness of the opposing team, it is very hard to get the sweep in a 4 game series. To get swept in back to back 4 game series might be another record the 2020 Jays could set, or tie? (I believe they already set records for most HR surrendered in a 3 game series and also in a 5 game stretch - absolutely wretched!!) I almost hope they lose every game to the end and miss the ridiculous 2020 'post-season' altogether. This team has no business anywhere near post-season play, and these young guys need a wake-up call that the f***ing idiot Montoyo is never going to be able to give effectively.
  23. I guess the good news is it is likely to get better because it can't get much worse. On MLB Network they said the record for one team in a 3 game series was the Red Sox scoring 56 total against the St Louis Browns in 1950 with scores of 20-4, 29-4 and 7-12. Actually, on air they incorrectly said it was against the Cards , which had me wondering but sure enough was versus the AL Browns https://www.baseball-almanac.com/teamstats/schedule.php?y=1950&t=BOS
  24. I agree, probably will be Ryu, Walker, and Shoemaker (or Ray) in the 'wild card' 3 game series
  25. Even Thornton or Borucki could be in the mix. Anderson will definitely be gone ($500K buyout is a done deal at this point). Roark may get another chance since they are on the hook for the full $12M, but won't last through May, if he continues to pitch the same garbage as this season. Seems to be a lack of command, getting behind in the count and no 'stuff' to battle out of it. The guy had 14.7 fWAR in 7 seasons from 2013-19 (average 2.1 per season), but garbage right now.
