  1. The point is if you have a guy with some serious issues around staying healthy you need better depth. That would ideally take the form of a super utility guy like Brock Holt or Josh Harrison. Guys like Goins and Barney are acceptable bench guys for small amounts of playing time. But if you have a guy you expect to be an everyday player but with a likely-hood of missing 60+ games due to injury, you need a better way to fill the void.
  2. Yes and he is cheap, so he is not necessarily going anywhere. BUT like I say, if you depend on him to be your everyday 2nd baseman and he can't answer the bell, you need to have a better backup plan than they do currently.
  3. Not sure about the overall record, but of course there was the 19 inning fiasco last year. Actually in 2015 they pounded the Sox 11-2. ETA: in 2015 that was a 4 game series in which the July 1st game was the Jays only win of the series
  4. I am not so sure Travis is a reasonable proposition at this point. We don't even know what is going on with that knee (although it sounds like Saunders who came back from it, albeit at a permanently reduced level). Can this guy's body actually hold up and should the Jays look elsewhere for an everyday 2nd baseman?
  5. It's not like he is doing it all on his own. Liriano has been being having another stinker, and then there is the Jays 'offense'.
  6. Projection on fangraphs still has the Jays with 82 wins (tied with Rays for 2nd wild card). I wonder how much they will downgrade that projection if they get swept this weekend.
  7. That's a good plan. And then whichever one is remaining plays 1B everyday. ETA: Jays will likely (and should) strongly favor Smoak over Pearce because he is a switch hitter and Pearce is too injury prone).
  8. On the flip side, if Smoak can produce at close to the level he has so far this season, wouldn't you want to keep him unless you plan on a major rebuild? Maybe it depends how much they think of Tellez (probably not much right now considering his performance at AAA to date).
  9. Absolutely agree. As I posted above, there are a lot of things that could break right to allow this team to be competitive in 2018. I just think this is not our year.
  10. Yeah I guess the wRC+ is at career average. His best was 2014 (of course in his free agency year). I guess I just am not impressed by the way he is doing it by taking a higher than usual number of walks. I would like to see him back to where he was in 2015 with a .218 ISO.
  11. Not without a productive offense and solid bullpen.
  12. Also depends on whether and to what extent young guys in the system can come up and contribute. Can Smoak maintain his new level (at least above an 850 OPS)? Also can old guys like Tulo, Morales and Martin bounce back?
  13. So on pace for 18. that's just not going to cut it. Come on Jays, be a part of history and get those swing and misses going. /sarc
  14. Donaldson goes down looking with called strikes 2 and 3 well within the strike zone. May as well not even take a bat up to his next plate appearance.
  15. 5 Ks through 2 innings. Could he get to 21 today?
  16. Happ has been doing OK but the Jays probably won't want to trade him if they have intention of competing in 2018. But yeah the impending free agents Liriano and Estrada are not going to get the Jays anything even if someone is willing to take them.
  17. The question is who goes in a fire sale. The obvious top candidates would have been Estrada and Liriano, but both are pitching poorly, so may not be anyone even interested in acquiring them. Bautista has been doing OK, but he also has trade veto with 5/10 rights. Joe Smith would have been another top trade candidate, but now with the shoulder issues that's less likely. Will they find a buyer for Donaldson who is willing to give up what the Jays feel they need to pull the trigger. Not if he keeps playing the way he has lately.
  18. Yeah totally overmatched. A few years ago that would have been a must see at bat, but now it's just a sad spectacle.
  19. Wow Donaldson is looking awful right now. Strike 3 was a slider right in his wheelhouse and he swung right through it.
  20. I would guess they drop to 10-11 games under, then finish the season strong to end up with a win total in the high 70s.
  21. And he just received all the run support he may need.
  22. Seems like it was a given with Donaldson DHing today and Barney playing 3rd.
  23. Yes and somewhat prophetically, the Jays who had the most runners LOB in this game were Morales (4) and Tulowitzki (5). Everyone focuses on who should be hitting 1-4 in the batting order, BUT if you have stiffs in those 5 and 6 holes, it really does lead to the kind of ineptitude we have been seeing too much of lately. I think the key question is what type of makeover will happen. My guess is that for business reasons, the Jays will attempt to do a 'quick retool'. With some luck they could again be a wild card contender in 2018. Yeah BUT Boston went 6 for 23 with RISP (.261) versus Toronto's 2 for 7 (.286). When you consider how many base runners that Boston squandered, the Jays were actually lucky to make it to the 11th inning. Overall, I again see the problem that the Jays' offense put up a crooked number, then went comatose. In this case only 1 run in 10 innings after the 1st inning outburst.
  24. We'll have to wait and see. Anything less than winning 2 of 3 will be another nail in the coffin of this season.
