  1. Yeah switching out Bautista for a light-hitting speedster would be OK, but what I really mean is getting guys in there with speed and some pop, like Cain or Gomez that I mentioned above. Isn't Alford predicted to have the chance to be that kind of player (essentially a 20/20 guy)?
  2. Yeah that's a pretty safe assumption considering his college alma mater.
  3. I think it also depends what it would take to extend him. Anything over $120M guaranteed would be be too risky for a guy showing signs of physical decline. But if he would take that contract and assuming the Jays don't get a trade offer that knocks their socks off, they may want to keep him. He is clearly a face of the franchise, and definitely the face in the absence of Bautista.
  4. This seems like a very real possibility if the Jays FO and ownership are intent on keeping 'the window' open for 1 more year in 2018 and they are in contention for a post-season spot by the 2018 trade deadline.
  5. Yes, it seems one of the OF spots will be filled by an internal candidate (Alford or Hernandez). The big question is who would be that 'legit corner OFer' to target in free agency. Cain would be nice but the price and term may be too high. Also he probably would prefer to stay as everyday CFer. maybe a Carlos Gomez or Jarrod Dyson or Terminator's suggestion of Kendrick. I don't think it will happen anyway. They aren't going to meet Martinez's price and the Mets are talking about keeping Bruce now. After that it drops off to pretty much nothing for free agent slugging OFers. Now is the time for the Jays to retool the offensive approach with more speed and less HR dependence.
  6. Pompey is still young enough to possibly rebound, but it is becoming less and less likely. Carrera is making $1.2M this season, and is on pace for about 1.3 fWAR. I wonder what he will get in 2018, $2M ? It seems the Jays would likely target a corner outfielder with 20-30 HR potential in free agency if the price is right, but there is not much out there other than Bruce, Martinez, and Carlos Gonzales (who is having a disastrous season).
  7. The fire burns deeply in that young man. Frankly, I like it !
  8. Yes I suspect Pannone may have more potential than the 'rankings' would suggest. If nothing else, maybe he can be a successful lefty reliever. Smith has previous history with Shapiro and the Indians between 2009 and 2013. He already suggested in an interview post trade that a return to the Jays in 2018 is a possibility. Trading Smith to the Indians during this difficult time with his mother's unfortunate situation is great for the Jays in building some goodwill among the MLB player fraternity.
  9. Haven't seen Governator post yet in this thread.........
  10. Smoak .980 OPS 3rd best in AL and 9th best in MLB
  11. Nice job by Pillar walking on 4 pitches. Three of which were borderline
  12. Yeah, I was referring to the 8 year megadeal you suggested for Donaldson. That is not going to happen, but a 4-5 year big money deal is in the realm of possibility
  13. And Bautista wanted (supposedly) 5/150. It isn't going to happen. And if it does, woe be the team that delivers that contract.
  14. Yeah but Donaldson will 'only' be 32 next season, so a 4 year deal covers his 32-35 year old seasons. Beltre is much older currently at 38. Even if Donaldson produced half the WAR of Beltre in his age 32-35 seasons it justifies the contract I suggested
  15. You can pick up vets on their last legs like Beltran or Holliday, or you can retain a player in his early 30's who still has potential to be a 4-5 WAR player as well as a team leader.
  16. Yeah the interesting part will be what happens with Vlad (and Bo) defensively. If they were to end up at 1B and 2B, respectively, that keeps 3B open for JD. I guess Vlad could end up in the corner OF also.
  17. Yes but how much? Assuming he can finish this season up strong, I still think I would offer him 4 yr / $120M for 2018-2021 with a 5th year option ($5 M buyout). If he wouldn't accept that, I would shop him.
  18. Nice to see JD coming around !!
  19. The collision that took out Schwarber's knee last season was pretty bad too.
  20. The skull is a pretty hard object. Can't feel too good to get that smashed into your knee.
  21. After seeing his backstory, Rowley seems like an easy guy to root for. Seems like he deserves a look in Sept. if he continues to produce in Buffalo.
  22. On pace for 45, so unlikely. If he gets to 40 and/or and keep the OPS over .900, that will have been an outstanding breakthrough.
  23. So Pillar appeared to get poked in the eye in the scrum of the Jays walk-off win celebration yesterday. Then last night, Judge got bumped and apparently chipped a tooth in the Yankees walk-off celebration. I wonder if he will get it fixed to original condition or cosmetically enhanced.
  24. It's surprising since he had been pitching well of late. But they have such a left-handed heavy rotation (4 leftys!), that you would think they might rather replace him with a righty to balance things out a bit.
