  1. Brad Marchand - Boston Bruins left winger ETA: from Wikipedia "Marchand, while known for his scoring ability, has also been described as one of the NHL's most notorious "pests." His play is often overshadowed by his on-ice antics and dirty play. "
  2. Best part is they executed the rundown perfectly and noone got hurt this time
  3. Hmm I was thinking that "1 poster >>> the forum." crack was Spanky poking fun at me for being the one to go against the forum consensus that intangible stuff which can't be quantified shouldn't be given much weight. Anyway I agree they shouldn't retain a player just for veteran leadership, but if the player is also still able to be productive (Smoak on pace for 1.5 fWAR this season), then could be worth keeping around. I guess I am not the only one that thinks so, as you may recall Stroman's lamentation on the issue prior to this season:https://sports.yahoo.com/stroman-unhappy-blue-jays-apos-225644362.html
  4. True he is showing strides but still a question mark and we won't know until he is actually thrown into the fray.
  5. He can play at the MLB level but he is still considered questionable as to whether he can be a plus defender at SS. Consider they alreadfy have a mediocre at best third baseman. Do you really want the whole left side of the infield to be guys who are average at best?
  6. Yes in 2018 (523 PA) Hernandez had a fangraphs defensive value of -17.1 and UZR/150 of -12.2. This season in 141 PA worth of playing time he has fangraphs defensive rating of +2.2 and UZR/150 of +20.2. So, if he can get his offense going again, he could still be a decent player.
  7. Considering the Jays have a glut of middle infield prospects and a shortage of OF prospects, why not just make the decision to move Biggio to the corner OF now, especially since he has been showing the ability to adapt to that (as you described). Another important consideration is Bichette. If you move Biggio to corner OF, that opens up 2B for Bichette (seems he is still considered unlikely to be an average or better SS at the MLB level).
  8. Smoak is making $8M this season on the 3rd (option) year of the extension signed after 2016. He has averaged 1.5 fWAR per season in 4 seasons with the Jays between 2015 and 2018. He is currently at 0.5 fWAR in 2019 with about 1/3 of the season in the books (on pace for another 1.5 fWAR). So $8M (same as current salary seems appropriate. Offering less than that would feel like a bit of a show of disrespect by the Jays toward him, and would be better to pay a few more M to show a guy you actually value him than penny-pinching (this IS NOT CLEVELAND!!!). They could go 1 yr $8M with a 2nd year option at $8 M, with a $1M buyout or vesting for 500 PA.
  9. Yeah there is some intangible value in that 'vetrin presenz' and Smoak is a guy who had to live through many years of underperforming and/or being inconsistent before finally getting more consistently solid in 2017. So he has lived the ups and downs and may be a good mentor to the young guys coming in with high expectations on them. Wow things are really happening : the future is now ! ETA: 2 more years of Smoak for $16M total (maybe give him a $2M bonus for each season that he hits 500 PA)?
  10. One thing I do like is the kid does seem to take getting hit around with a certain degree of stoicism, perhaps indicating he is mentally tough. With so much of the game being between the ears, that bodes well for him. If he goes on to be a top of the rotation guy, everyone will obviously be praising this "stroke of genius".
  11. Yeah disappointing to only win 1 of a 4 game series at home, considering they did not face Sale or JD Martinez in this series. But at least they competed - other than in the embarrassing game 1. Seemed to me that Montoyo kind of threw in the towel on game 4 when he put Luciano in when only down 3-1 in the 7th. Overall though some positive things to take from the series: Smoak coming to life, Tellez on a nice little roll and the starting pitching other than game 1 was fairly good against a formidable offense.
  12. As I suggested in the other thread, that Tellez single to deep center field reminds me of Ortiz in his later years (of course he was old with worn out feet - Tellez is just slow). But in his defense, and he well knows, Bradley has a cannon arm.
  13. It occured to me yesterday, that Tellez has a body very reminiscent of Big Pappi (and just hit an Ortiz-esque long single to straight away center field). Yeah that slow baserunning is a concern but man he hits the ball hard.
  14. I think it is just the frustration of seeing this team the last few weeks after they had gone on that nice little role to get to .500, especially the frustratingly pitiful offense against numerous shitballers. I think now that the controversy around Vlad sitting out on the holiday Monday might have something to do with the 'displeased' look I saw on Montono's face following Tuesday's big win. I don't blame him for being a little salty over getting mixed up in that - saw an article on Sportsnet where Atkins admits he should have mentioned to Montoyo about the Victoria Day matinee game and making lineup considerations accordingly.
  15. Yeah if only they can find and secure a suitable location.....
  16. True, but drafts are a longshot crap-shoot. Also, who knows how much actual control that stooge had on the actual draft picks. I tend to think he is mostly just Shapiro's yes-man. This is Shapiro's show for better (hopefully) or worse
  17. Milwaukee has retractable roof, real grass and similar climate as Toronto. The stadium is reported to have cost about $400M USD in 2001 (about $550 M in 2018 inflation-adjusted USD). So I am saying build a new stadium from scratch on the Milwaukee model.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miller_Park ETA: see Toronto/milwaukee climate comparison in the link:https://weatherspark.com/compare/y/19863~14288/Comparison-of-the-Average-Weather-in-Toronto-and-Milwaukee
  18. How about this: I think Atkins wanted to hire someone dumber than he is (not easy to do). BAhAHA:p
  19. So I just caught a shot of Buntoyo on camera walking onto the field after the final out was recorded. He looks like he is is worried or something (like he is trying not to shart his pants). I really think there is a reason this guy never got the nod to manage an MLB team before. Seems the Jays picked a stiff, just because he is Latino (hope I am wrong but not much evidence so far to indicate otherwise).
  20. Rogers is so BIG that they do not need corporate welfare to help build a new stadium, but I feel the local government should pitch in something to help. As i posted earl;ier, a retractable roof stadium with grass was done for reasonable cost in Milwaukee (similar climate to TO), so why can't the Jays do something like what they have with a little extra for under $1B CAD. The capital expenditure is a tax write-off for Rogers, so not like they are actually spending all that money.
  21. I realize that location for a new stadium is an issue, and I am not familiar enough to suggest a possible alternative location. Although I recall reading a few years back that there was one or two locations for a potential new stadium on the waterfront which were written about. By now, I suppose those areas may have been otherwise developed. I just feel like the reason the Dome renovations are not really proceeding is that they realize they can't make silk out of a sow's ear. Am I missing something ?
  22. Another thing to consider is those numbers are likely 'paid attendance', not actual butts in the seats. Looking at tonight's crowd with our only good starting pitcher on the mound reminds me of the final days of the Expos (maybe about 10K actually in attendance). This is pathetic and I agree with you not sustainable for very long. I imagine TV viewership has taken a similiar (maybe not quite as dramatic) decline.
  23. You mean that 'brand new' Target Field that first opened 9 years ago? Actually it has been a cool and rainy spring so far and highlights the peculiarity that they did not include a retractable roof in MSP, of all places. In contrast, Miller Park which opened in 2001 has a retractable roof and a reported construction cost of only $400M USD ($566 M in 2018 inflation adjusted dollars). It makes me think the Jays should just build new from scratch (like the Rangers did) instead of wasting money trying to renovate the outdated Skydome. ETA: that he is not convincing Corporate to go this route says more to me than anything about what a small thinker that Shapiro is. He should be convincing them to go big or go home.
  24. YES I was thinking the same thing earlier about Boras and his criticism of the Jays. I hate that Ba**tard, but he is right about the Jays operating like a chic**sh*t small market team instead of the corporate money-bags backed large market team that they are. Shapiro is running out of my patience. The other thing is how much difference could one position player make in a 12-2 loss. Regardless, they should of had the only 'star' in the lineup on a national holiday. Yes and I am ready to see Mr. Tender Fingers sent to the pen. Hopefully, the shorter outings will allow his right hand to stay 'viable' and the Jays are seriously in need of a bridge to Giles. Tepera seems to have regressed, and you can't trust Biagini and the rest. I am interested to see what Phelps looks like if/when he hits the scene
  25. Throwaway season (in terms of letting the kids and temporary placeholders play and take their lumps) should not mean you play the game the wrong way.
