  1. Santander's metrics in left field are fine this season.
  2. Why would you assume this is a phantom IL stint? It was mentioned that Berrios has been dealing with this for awhile and his stuff is down to a large degree in recent months compared to the start of the season.
  3. Varland has looked quite a bit better in recent outings and gives the club a bit of a chance for length as an opener.
  4. How does a baseball player compare to a cake mix brand? I'm just not getting the association.
  5. I seriously doubt that given the stakes at this point. I don't recall a player being benched by this manager for lack of hustle at any point of his tenure and this would be an odd time to start.
  6. You can apply the same kind of thinking to individual slumps as well. I've looked at the underlying numbers of players at times and more often than not when a player hits a deep slump the expected statistics aren't nearly as bad as the results would lead you to expect.
  7. I don't know if it really matters if the club extracted an org guy by trading either of these two.
  8. Wouldn't the Jays still effectively be leading due to the tiebreaker? The Yankees need to finish a game ahead in the standings to take the division due to the tiebreaker.
  9. Last night's game was another kick square in the nuts. I'm not one for conspiracies but it's hard not to feel like the MLB umpires have it in for the Blue Jays over the last week. Between the Lukes fan interference play that was ruled a home run despite Lukes being prevented from an opportunity to catch the ball, to the Varsho catch that was ruled a trap despite angles clearly showing the ball in the glove the entire time, to the Springer double that was called foul despite angles showing it inside the line, to the egregious strike zone last night that cost the Jays a lot of base runners it's really hard not to be increasingly incensed over the situation. Mixed in with an offensive slump at the worst possible time has led to a really frustrating week.
  10. I don't think Manoah was nearly as bad as Stroman who repeatedly clashed with his teammates and was the biggest prima donna in the sport. His stuff might be nearly as bad now though which is a sad state of affairs.
  11. No you’re not, that’s the only kind of post you make.
  12. Would Manoah still be eligible for a raise despite not barely pitching the last few sesaons?
  13. I think Carpenter showed flashes of potential in his time with the Jays but couldn't stay healthy. Manoah had the double whammy of not being able to stay healthy and seeing his stuff regress dramatically as well. I wish him well with whatever team he ends up with but he faces an uphill battle.
  14. Holy f*** I didn't see a Manoah DFA being in the cards. He was sitting 90-91 MPH in his rehab stint though which wasn't ultra encouraging.
  15. Only 38 PA so it's small sample size stuff to be certain.
  16. It's been announced that players aren't allowed to refer to the dugout for which pitches to challenge.
  17. Santander didn't start his rehab stint until September 11. I had a look at a bunch of the AAA Statcast box scores and his average exit velocity and hard hit rates match up with the overall Statcast search result I posted earlier. Most games have 0 or 1 hard hit balls with a bunch of soft contact mixed in. There are certainly some barreled baseballs and the walk rate is excellent but there's not a lot to indicate he's going to come up and mash against MLB pitching. His batted ball metrics are pretty uninspiring as well as he's placed the ball on the ground 50% of the time with a weak 27% fly ball. Further compounding the issue is a staggering 57% pop up rate on his fly balls so it's easy to conclude that his swing isn't where it needs to be yet.
  18. Unfortunately that's not really true as he averaged only 84.4 MPH exit velocity and depressing 26.9% hard hit rate while in Buffalo. I'd like to see how his swing speeds looked as they were largely reduced to his healthy seasons prior to joining the Blue Jays.
  19. I don't like the low limit on challenges given how many calls a bad umpire can potentially screw up in a game. I'd hand out something like 1-2 challenges per inning personally as I don't believe a challenge adds more than a few seconds to a plate appearance.
  20. I think framing will still be very important given the limited number of challenges. I don't think the borderline calls will be challenged that often vs the more egregious umpiring mistakes and as such the good framers will continue to steal strikes, just at a bit of a reduced rate. One thought I had was that a bad framer can lead to potential strikes actually being called balls instead, so perhaps this subset of catchers could use the challenge system to mitigate the negative effects of their sloppy receiving.
  21. Given how bad his stuff has looked this season I'd gladly accept a dominant 3-4 innings with a quick hook in the post season.
  22. I think giving Bassitt a chance to recover from the back issues may be very important as well. The team will need to run a 4 rotation in the ALDS if they don't want their starters pitching on short rest and I believe Bassitt is firmly in the top 4 options.
  23. I think the tradeoff is well worth it to give Bo a better chance to be ready for the post season. I think the Trajekt machines can be a big difference maker in allowing the hitters to maintain their timing more effectively compared to prior seasons.
  24. Yeah it was definitely some of both. He did paint a lot of pitches inside the edges of the zone without being rewarded for it though, and combined with a bogus trap call and shaky infield defense his line made it look like he pitched far worse than he actually did.
