    Those don't exactly sound like the words of an executive who plans to spend money in the free agent pitching market. Hopefully it's just posturing towards agents though.

    I don't think Pearson should necessitate the kind of misgivings he seems to be generating in the minds of much of the fanbase right now. It sounds a lot like the early season version of the guy was dealing with a strained elbow for a good chunk of time. He made an error in judgment and hid his elbow issues from the club for a amount of time before finally fessing up. I would hope he's learned a valuable lesson and won't do something like this again, he's just so incredibly important to the club hitting it's full potential in the future. Just think if Vladimir Guerrero hits his ceiling and becomes an MVP candidate, I would suggest that Pearson is just as important on the pitching side of the ledger. I think we saw a glimpse of what Pearson can offer when he absolutely dominated the Rays over two innings in the post season. That was the fully healthy version of Nate Pearson and he toyed with a major league lineup.

    From the little glimpses that we have of the guy from interviews George Springer seems like a really good dude. The stuttering support he's offered for kids is very inspiring, since the spring lockdown my daughter has started to deal with some stuttering issues herself. Oddly enough I've even noticed to see it creep in a little bit in myself despite not having any memories of dealing with it at all in my previous 4+ decades of existence.

    From looking at the heat maps pitch location appears to be an issue for Matz in 2020. His primary pitch is a sinker, and the majority of them looked to be placed from the belt and up. And with his slider the majority were up in the zone as well.

    Hard to get excited about this trade either way, the main accomplishment seems to be clearing out a few spots on the 40 man roster. Sent out are two expendable relievers and a prospect who might profile as a back of the rotation arm if things break right. Coming back is a back of the rotation candidate, maybe Matz can be moved to the bullpen and have his stuff play up as a power lefty some day. With the Jays needing innings out of the rotation and Matz only having one year of control remaining this doesn't look like the year for that to happen though.

    The bad two weeks has an oversized impact due to the shortened nature of the season, making it far more difficult to project Semien going forward. Fangraphs has an article up today, where Zips projections for Semien are very encouraging. The 50 percentile outcome is 4.1 WAR, I really don't think Gregorius is has a very realistic shot at that type of season even on the higher range of his expected outcomes. https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=biggio001cav

    Semien's numbers were basically ruined by a bad two week slump to start the season. In a season where it was only 60 games long it's foolhardy to place as much emphasis on the end of season results compared to a full season of play. There is a very realistic possibility that with a full season to recover Semien's results wouldn't have been that much worse than 2019.

    The comment is certainly open to interpretation. Within the same answer he also mentioned that the Jays could get creative with finding opportunities to continue adding to the roster, which also makes it sound like available payroll may be a bit scarce at this point.

    I go with the potential upside of Semien all day long. This is a player who is only 60 games removed from an MVP calibre season. Simmons has had recurring ankle injury issues the last few years that have caused his defensive numbers to tumble, so there's no guarantee you are getting the all world defender if he's signed.

    Interesting moments for me included Shapiro saying there really was no hard upper limit to future Jays payrolls. Somewhat dispiriting however was the mention from the same Mark Shapiro stating the heavy lifting for the offseason was finished. This team could really use another decent starter or two, hopefully they find the way to squeeze that into whatever remaining budget they have left over.

    That would have been the penultimate moment of the offseason if Springer answered that way. Unlike Steve Simmons however George Springer looks to be a very high class individual.

    This article really got my blood boiling a few weeks ago. It's a total hatchet job in which Cathal Kelly lays into Mark Shapiro, parroting the inane theory put out by the mouthbreathers that Shapiro was hired for the sole purpose of cutting Jays payroll and saving Rogers money. Shapiro has stated all along that when the time was right to push to competing the money would be there, and all of the recent signings show that the organization has fully backed that up.     Even somebody like Jake Odorizzi would potentially be a very good addition, I do think he's very likely to bounce back fully from his poor 2020 season which was largely ruined by injuries. Jays have made all kinds of free agency bets on bounce back candidates already, from Ray, to Chatwood, to Yates and finally to Semien. Even if these guys don't reach previous heights of performance they'll still likely act as substantial upgrades to the roster as is, might as well keep the ball rolling and add more upside to the club.

    Wow this is the infield move I was hoping for but wasn't really expecting it to happen, I figured somebody would sign Semien to play shortstop instead. With his addition this lineup is absolutely stacked now, and with or without potential breakouts from guys like Vladdy Jr. and Danny Jansen this lineup is going to score an obscene amount of runs. I do hope the starting rotation is addressed at some point, there are plenty of depth options already available on the roster but a good quality starter would really push this team over the top.

    As far as I can tell Realmuto is only 29 years old at present. Of the guys that signed as free agents in your list he's the youngest of the bunch, and has only signed for 5 years. He's young enough to provide decent value for the Phillies. I really don't see why his AAV is such a big deal, it's a relatively short contract for an elite free agent who is less than 30 years old at signing. I do wonder who the Phillies were even bidding against and what kind of offers Realmuto was fielding before signing his deal. For all we know it could be a Chris Davis situation where the only real competition was with the team who he already played for.

    I look at the comparison being more that Grandal is underpaid for what he provides vs Realmuto being overpaid.

    Simmons is a tough player to gauge. He's suffered from a substantial defensive decline with the spate of recent ankle injuries. There is a real question as to whether he will continue to be elite going forward.

    I think with more reps at the position he would almost certainly improve a lot, but early defensive metrics aren't pretty to say the least. In his small sample at third base in 2020 (only 10 games) he graded almost as poorly as Vlad's numbers from 2019.

    Is he even worth the roster spot on a team that intends to compete? I don't like the idea of the Jays giving a spot to a guy who's averaged 30 innings per season the last three years, they need to get better production out of their rotation this season.

    Yeah no doubt the glacial pace of the offseason is largely to blame, but there's been a competition to the the first to throw out speculative "reporting" with no attempt to independently verify the veracity of any of the information.

    Got it. All we know is that one team has a formal offer made to Bauer, so obviously that makes them the clear favorite to sign him. f*** me this guesswork is getting out of hand this offseason in particular.
