I don't think it's crazy. The only way that a $150 million deal for Varsho becomes remotely possible is if he produces a crazy 5/6 etc. win season in his platform year, and that's a player I'd like to keep around long term if possible. His defense is obviously going to drop off at some point during the contract but he's at such a high level that it's not going to completely evaporate overnight barring some sort of catastrophic injury.

That's the wrong team president as it was more likely Beeston in charge at the time. At any rate Shapiro taking over from Beeston was the key move that allowed the current run of success to begin in earnest. I believe that Edward Rogers also deserves plenty of credit for allowing the incoming team president to actually run the team like the big market club it was supposed to be.

Just being realistic. In a full healthy season maybe Varsho could club 35-40 home runs on the upper end but Judge's ceiling is 50+.

ZiPS projects Lauer for 1.1 FWAR in 108 innings which is right in line with his 2025 season, although you appear to have conveniently ignored that projection as it doesn't fit your "replacement level" narrative. All of the other projections view him primarily as a relief arm with minimal starts under his belt. He's not a high end arm by any means but he's still a valuable piece to the overall pitching puzzle as a dude who can start and relieve as needed.

Lauer was nowhere close to being a replacement level pitcher. That does a massive disservice to how effective he was in multiple roles for the Blue Jays last season.

The two sides were $1.35 million apart. It's too bad neither side was willing to budge a bit as there was likely a middle ground available but alas that wasn't the case.

The Blue Jays front office and coaching staff should probably care what Lauer thinks. I seriously doubt they would consider trading him unless he was becoming a major distraction but I expect there would be an attempt to at least smooth things over a bit.

People tend to laugh at what you say as a general rule so you should expect that as a default response by now.

It takes a "special" breed of person to whine about the batting order in the first few weeks of spring training.

It would be poetic justice to see him traded to a team like the Rockies or White Sox. It'd be like "enjoy playing on a last place team instead of a potential world series contender so you can potentially earn a few extra million bucks in free agency". Lauer was highly effective last season but he beat his FIP and xERA by over half a run each and remove him from pitching in front of an elite defense and his numbers would look a lot worse.

I do recall another rumor that popped up years ago that Bo offered to move off of shortstop for Didi Gregorius of all people. I believe that Bo would have zero issues with switching positions if it ultimately helped the team win more games, and you need to look no further than his offer to play second base in the World Series as proof of this. At the end of the day there were teams that valued Bo at a higher value than the Blue Jays did and this was nothing more than an amicable split where both sides felt it was best to move on.

I do like this contract structure as it forces Max to earn his paycheck through health+effectiveness. If he repeats 2025's innings total he'll earn all of $6 million this time around.

That's either the best or worst case scenario depending on your perspective. At least the contract will be cheap if he spends most of the season on the IL.

People hated Hoffman as closer largely due to the platter of meatball sandwiches he tended to serve up. Scherzer was actually worse in this regard and is likely a terrible choice to be a closer on a team with intentions of competing for a title.

I find it hard to be terribly excited about this news. Scherzer could barely stay healthy and when he was on the mound he was generally incapable of keeping the ball in the ballpark.

Why don't you regale us with the wisdom of who was supposed to take over full time short stop duties from Bo. Don't try to say Semien as he was worse than Bo at short stop at that point of his career. Unless you somehow think Santiago Espinal was starting short stop material it was awfully slim pickings.

That's a commonly held misconception that Semien was still an elite short stop defender when he signed with the Blue Jays. His 2020 defensive metrics were actually worse on a rate basis than Bo's awful 2025 numbers, and Bo outperformed him at short stop in 2021 as well. On top of that this was a single season signing and once Semien left the Blue Jays yet again had nobody other than Bo that was capable of full time short stop duties. Semien 2020 451 Innings -6 DRS (-13.3 DRS/1000) -9 OAA (-20 OAA/1000) Bo 2025 1139 innings -12 DRS (-10.5 DRS/1000) -13 OAA (-11.4 OAA/1000)
