  1. I'd still like to see one good OF and at least one good (i.e. proven) reliever added. I wouldn't be surprised to see them settle with what they have for the bullpen, plus waivers / small pick ups, which again I'd probably be OK with. For me the key signing now is a good OF, even if that's someone like JB who isn't good in the field but can play there. I'd rather that than an cheap OK player who's better defensively (Revere etc).
  2. At the beginning of the offseason I wanted EE more than JB, and would have been happy with him accepting the 4/80 offer, but would have preferred neither rather than both at the contracts we thought they'd demand. Now that we have Morales and Pearce, I'd rather have JB than EE at a discounted rate, but again would prefer neither rather than both. Sure a bargain EE would have been an upgrade on Morales, but we couldn't have known the market for EE would never materialise and I'm satisfied with the way the FO handled the situation.
  3. I think it's those cards that come with a piece of jersey attached.
  4. FYI you can delete posts, it's an option you can select when you go in to edit them.
  5. Yeah, and at this point in the offseason it does seem to make sense for all parties. Main sticking point is going to be the length of contract - will the Jays offer 3 years? Would Bautista accept 2?
  6. Sounds like bollocks. While he may well end up back here, I don't believe he'd turn down a fair deal from another team just because he wants to play for the Jays. I'd guess it's more about PR in that if he signs here on a relatively low cost deal, he and his agent can say it's because he loves it here, and not because no one else wanted him at a fair price.
  7. Russell Westbrook is currently averaging a triple double for the season. It may not be sustainable, and the Thunder aren't serious contenders in the West, but it's fun to watch him dominate. He's had 13 triple doubles this season so far. To put that in context there's been 18 by Raptors in franchise history.
  8. What we'll never know is would he have had the year he had in 2015 without cheating, and if he hadn't been caught would he now be our 1B instead of Smoak. He was appalling in 2016 but only after he knew he'd failed a test - mentally he basically knew his career was over before it really began (irrelevant whether he was guilty or not, he knew he'd be banned because he'd tested positive). In all likelihood he'd have been at best a replacement level player this season, but you never know.
  9. Of course there's no guarantees he'll get anything better - but Jose thought he was worth $150m a year ago, and no one was ever going to pay him that. No doubt he, and his agent, will think if he's patient he'll get a better offer than that (i.e. your suggestion, not $150m!). Maybe if he hasn't had anything he considers suitable by spring training, we can put in a similar offer then.
  10. Tampa have at least 4 starters they could trade for a haul as well.
  11. He wouldn't accept that though would he? Why wouldn't he wait until June when someone else can sign him without losing a pick. Maybe if it was a player option he'd consider it.
  12. This is a great idea, it's boring that nearly 50% of the 162 games are against the same 4 teams. More variety would surely help with selling tickets for most teams too. Travel in this day and age shouldn't be a major issue anymore, you could always have the schedule worked so that a team played a few series in a row against similar region based teams, North Eastern, California etc.
  13. Like it! Other potential players to acquire: Matt Bush Ryan Brawn A-Rod A.J. Pierzynski Chase Utley Rougned Odor Jung Ho Kang Yordano Ventura Jonathan Papelbon
  14. Not sure if you're joking? Either way, I think he's had more than enough opportunities, and we now have a much better option in Pearce as full time 1B, with Morales playing a few games when necessary. We should attempt to trade him to anyone who will pay even part of his salary. If no one wants him at all we should release him and take the hit in sunk cost. $4m a year shouldn't prevent us from acquiring anyone. It wasn't that long ago that we were paying Ricky Romero $7.5m to not pitch for us. It's obviously not ideal, but he's shown he's not good enough to play a major role, and is a waste of a bench position. I'd rather have someone who can pinch hit, or someone with more positional flexibility than just 1B.
  15. Yeah when the games started to really matter towards the end of the season and the playoffs, he lost his job to Colabello in 2015 and Encarnacion in 2016. Gibbons just stopped playing him.
  16. Quote from that article "Blue Jays manager John Gibbons indicated Smoak and Pearce will platoon at first" Damn it.
  17. To be fair you've got a really good point about how trends drive the market. Miller in the postseason this year, the Royals last year. A bit like how in the NBA everyone seems to be going small ball and relying on the 3. I think what happens mid to long term with Osuna will also have a effect on the overall perceived value of relievers. It's fairly likely he'll never be converted to a starter now, if he has a long, successful career as a closer (5+ more years, whether it's with the Jays or not) we may see less of young pitchers always being steered towards starting.
  18. Yeah I agree it's going to be interesting. If the trend does continue then I think we could eventually see an adjustment to WAR calculations for relievers to reflect that. Not sure how it'd work though. Some sort of multiple applied for innings pitched when the score is close from the 7th inning onwards? I know they'd be push back from the people who believe every inning is the same, but at the moment that's not what's happening. For example a scoreless inning in the 8th of a 1 run game is seen as more important than a scoreless inning in the 1st of the same game, simply because the both teams have less chances to score after the 8th than the 1st inning. And that's ignoring the human factors of pressure and atmosphere etc late in the game.
  19. Yeah, it'll be interesting to see what happens. The threat of injury or becoming replacement level hasn't slowed the free agent cost of starters though. The fact is most free agent signings that are decent players are an overpay, simply because the signing team isn't giving up any assets (unless it's a draft pick, and even then that's only a hypothetical future asset, not a current, tangible asset). So normally you have multiple teams interested in signing someone at their "true value" and you have to pay more than everyone else to get them to sign for your team. That's not changing anytime soon.
  20. Exactly, FWIW I think he'll have at least an OK career if we trade him somewhere he'd get a chance to play. He may never be more than a OK outfielder, but he could be a lot better than that. Of course he could also be a lot worse, and never make it, something I think is more likely if he stays.
  21. My point is that doesn't exist in the remaining free agent market, we'd have to weaken another area to obtain it in a trade, and that so far in his career Pompey hasn't shown he can do that either. But Pompey has the potential to be a close approximation. It's inaccurate to state conclusively that Pompey can't hit. What's frustrating is that we may never know, because it seems unlikely he'll be given another chance.
  22. On paper Pompey is exactly what we need. A young, fast, switch hitting outfielder, who isn't a liability defensively. But he's sucked in the (limited) chances he's had in the majors, and Gibby doesn't trust him. It's so frustrating that we may have to settle for signing a relatively limited OF in the weak remaining free agent pool, or give up something valuable in a trade. I hope Pompey gets a shot in spring training to convince Gibby if we haven't traded him by then.
  23. Revere was a polarising player when he was here, so many hated his complete lack of power! He's an option I guess. Is he any better than Carrera or Upton though? FWIW the player we traded him for, Drew Storen, is also a free agent.
  24. Puig is risky but has a lot of upside. I think we'd be crazy to give up Osuna (young, good, cheap, a position we need more not less of) for him, but if there was another way to trade for him then I'd be all for it.
  25. His real name is Glenn.
