  1. Who is going to give >$100million to Darvish after this season? I'm not sure that Texas can afford to keep him.
  2. Danny Jansen: Blue Jays Catcher of the Future "And lest you think Jansen is a bat-first player, it's his skills behind the plate that have won him accolades at every stop in his career. The 6'3"/225 Jansen presents a big target for pitchers, but he covers the lower half of the strike zone extremely well, which is important for hurlers who rely on the two-seamer that he has caught like Sean Reid-Foley, Conner Greene, and TJ Zeuch. Jansen is a superior blocker of balls in the dirt, and he has long been an excellent framer of pitches. His ability to work with pitchers and his leadership skills have also been lauded for some time now. Jansen has a strong, accurate arm - his infielders have to be on their toes when a runner attempts to steal, because Jansen's throw will arrive in a hurry and on the spot. " Sounds promising.
  3. This. If Alford had the same injury in the minors we'd all still be pissed off.
  4. If we can't even give prospects playing time without them getting injured then what's the point of this season?
  5. Nah, keep reading the thread and you'll get to the post that shows the difference.
  6. Except you're ignoring important points: the 2nd wildcard was only introduced in 2012 negating your it's happened before theory; the second part of this hypothetical scenario is where the 2nd wildcard is in close reach, a .500 record but >5 teams and games out is completely different to the same record but only say 2 games out; if the Jays got back to around .500 at the deadline it would mean winning the majority of the games, and likely have players returning from injury and playing well. This is good as it gives you options - ride the good form to the playoffs, or sell assets at a high price; the worst case scenario is surely that we suck because of injuries and loss of form - meaning we miss out on playoffs but also can't get value for trades.
  7. A rebuild you trade everyone who has either reached or is past their peak. So as well as JD, you trade Pillar, Happ, Tulo, Martin, etc. You probably also trade anyone you can get lots of value for like Stroman or Sanchez. A retool you keep players who will still be valuable in the next 1 to 2 years, and supplement them with trading expiring contracts, free agents, and a few trades of veterans. IMO JD being traded fits into both of these scenarios.
  8. Yeah and I'm sure the front office and the vast majority of this board will agree. What I don't know what the FO will do is if we are only a few games over .500 (in isolation, ignoring the poor start, that's not a great record, but it would take a very good run of form to get there) but still in serious contention for the 2nd wildcard.
  9. Under the new rules Estrada can't be offered a QO anyway (now you are only allowed one QO in your career whether you accept it or not). The interesting dilemma will be what if we are around .500, and just a few games out of a second wildcard place?
  10. Yeah, I see the Nationals as the team with potentially the biggest want for him (he'd sit nicely behind Scherzer and Strasburg), with the Astros and Orioles potentially also interested. Maybe if another contending team suffers injuries then there'd be more interested parties to drive the cost up. I personally would be happy with a trade built around one of the Nationals' starter prospects who can go straight in the rotation to prepare them for next year when they'd hopefully remain in the rotation.
  11. WAR doesn't really accurately reflect a catcher's abilities behind the plate and Maile is already at -0.5 (almost as bad as Salty's -0.6) because he can't hit.
  12. So you don't think that a 33 year old pitcher with a history of back issues, who says his back aches, and would be acquired in all likelhood to start for a playoff team on short rest / 4 man rotation, is an injury risk? Come on, be sensible.
  13. "zero" is incorrect. Estrada: Feels lingering effects of back injury He says it's better than last year but it stills aches - he'll do well to get through 25+ games with no effect. Hopefully it won't be a major issue, but we've heard that a few times already this season!
  14. With all being well we could get something good (I'd be happy with a young pitcher who can enter the rotation for 2018), but I do think Estrada's back could effect his value - he'd be traded near the end of a long season.
  15. I'd be happy if we are in playoff contention at the deadline - but if we aren't, the expiring contracts of Estrada and Smith in a package deal could bring something enticing back for us. Someone like the Nationals and Austin Voth could be a good trade partner. Voth is projected to be a back of the rotation guy, but could start straight away for a non contending team, and is likely expendable for the Nats to improve their World Series chances for 2017.
  16. Haha, again saying Jones is injured and therefore an easy out and he comes up with a hit
  17. Wow 18 games in a row with the starter going less than 7 according to Buck - did not realise it had been that long. Would have guessed no more than 10.
  18. Martin looks so weird not wearing catching gear. It's a bit like when you see a glasses wearer with contacts for one of the first times.
  19. Great to see, Travis playing well is a big part of the Jays success.
  20. Hope Alford is given the whole game and not pinch hit for.
