    Yeah that's my point - he was good for them the year before, then wasn't in 2016. He was pretty good for us once we picked him up, and now isn't having a good year. Just like most relievers he has ups and downs. But because of his age he might not get another chance.

    Pretty much all non elite relievers have good and bad years, unfortunately because of his age this might be the end for Grilli. If he was 5 years younger then no doubt someone would pick him up when he's inevitably released, and maybe he then comes back stronger next year.

    Nah, they've handled the situation well, no chance they trade Pillar because of this. If Alford is OK he can replace Bautista next year. Obv a long way to go though.

    Ironically not being in contention for the playoffs for this year would help us in the short term because as well as September call ups we wouldn't be tempted to hold onto expiring contracts like Estrada.

    People worry at the average age being the highest in the majors, but if Bautista (37) and Grilli (40) are replaced next season with say Alford (22) and Greene (22), that alone would bring down the average age of the 25 man by 1.3 years putting us right in the middle of the pack.

    Agree 100%. Every good team has a mixture of veterans and youngsters. We've already got key young players like Stroman, Sanchez, Osuna, Biagini, and Travis and Pillar in their mid 20's. Lots of prospects who are anticipated to be ready in the next 2 years, plus whatever we bring in at the deadline and in the offseason.

    Unfortunately I doubt I'll ever visit either Pittsburgh or Denver, but I'm planning a San Fran / San Diego trip in March / April next year and will be catching games at both (as well as a warriors basketball game). Seattle is probally my favourite ballpark I've seen a game at. But I've only done Mariners, Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox and Jays home games as I'm in England and only get to North America every few years.

    I was at Fenway last season for a Jays game and had a great experience. It was the game that had a rain delay in the last series of the season. Didn't have any of the negatives you did, didn't even hear anyone swear (and even if I had you should try watching soccer in England - it's often the first time kids will hear swearwords when their dads take them to a game). I loved Boston as a city as well - and the people didn't appear any better or worse than anywhere else in America.

    Weird one - the Nats buy out Harper's last year of arbitration (2018) for $21.6m. Guess they were talking an extension but he is insisting he wants to hit free agency after the 2018 season?

    Well said. As people start to come off the DL, it's time to go on a winning streak to try to save the season.

    More important than the Wahoo logo itself, is all the societal factors that allows it to remain in use. The logo is a very visible reminder of this. As Hurl alludes to - a caricature of a minority group with a bigger "voice" would have been changed by now. The name is so closely linked with the logo, that it probably should be changed too.

    Throw in JD as a candidate too if he is back from injury soon. I still think Pillar would be one of the final roster vote options if he fails to get in otherwise - Saunders made it in that way last year.

    Pillar will be one of the leading candidates to be the Blue Jays' representative (every team has to have at least one) as a reserve - and reserves are picked by a combination of fans, coaches and players. If he failed to get in that way, and wasn't then picked by the manager, he'd probably be in the final roster vote.

    That's true, but as I'm sure you know, the Gold Glove doesn't necessarily go to the best defender. It often goes to the player with the best year, who is also good defensively.

    In all seriousness, if Pillar is an all star (which seems quite likely) and KK isn't, that will probably have an effect on the voters.

    Osuna and Sanchez (the equivalent for the bullpen and starters) have both been on the DL too. Add in the poor results from Pearce and Travis and that equals an historically bad start to the season.
