    I think the odd man out in a Freeman signing could be Kirk. I think Vlad could play some 3B, but it could be a merry go round of 1B/3B/DH for him, 1B/DH for Freeman and CF/DH for Springer if he finds himself dealing with injuries again. Kirk might be a more valuable trade piece rather than a backup C for the year with some games at DH. Maybe use him with Groshans in a package for a SP?

    Yeah I wondered if that might be what it referred to. Guess this really only applies to top level prospects and the chance to get an extra pick may encourage teams to take risks to start clocks early even if it backfires.

    I’m curious how they’d set up a system to give draft picks to teams that don’t manipulate service time. Like how do you prove a team has or hasn’t done that? It seems like everyone knows it happens when guys are kept down until the Super 2 cutoff, but you still can’t completely prove a team does that to keep a guy an extra year. Unless I’m completely misunderstanding the service time system haha

    Yeah I don’t think they actually would either. Votto has always stated he wouldn’t accept a trade anywhere (though one can hope he’d change his mind to come home). I also don’t see them adding bad contracts to their most valuable trade pieces. Fun big trade idea but not likely.

    I’d definitely love to get me some Castillo! Just not sure about the other three guys and the acquisition cost. If Votto were open to coming here, you’ve got a solid hitter who is getting paid, but is 38. He could fall off a cliff any day. I’d hope that taking Suarez and Mous would pretty much offset the cost of getting him. This would mean we should really only be paying for Castillo if we’re taking on nine figures in contracts. I’d try to keep Gurriel out of that deal since that would create another hole in the lineup that we likely don’t have the money to fill. Maybe sub Hoglund in for Pearson so that we maintain decent starting depth while creating the leagues best rotation after this trade.

    I think the one question we have to consider is how much payroll has the FO been authorized to go to. We’re all assuming 30-35 based on the Seager rumours, but maybe they have 40-45 to play around with? I can’t imagine them offering every dollar they had left to Seager. Or that’s a soft payroll they have, and grabbing Freeman/Marte as win now moves motivates Rogers to give them a little more for pitching depth. Getting those two means two-three years of championship expectations and a few more years after that of a young, hopefully extended core to retool around through drafting and free agency.

    Hadn’t really considered that option but I do like it! It would add more to the payroll, but if it means adding a Canadian superstar, I wonder if Rogers okays an extra 10-15 mill on top of the 30 they seemed to have for Seager. I just think they still need a backend starter after all that which is why I tend to lean towards a cheaper Bryant.

    Sorry meant Ketel, not Starling. Thinking was he’s a better solution for 2B for now and can cover the OF when needed and shift out there his final year with us if Martinez is ready and Gurriel/Teo have walked.

    Thanks man, haha. Honestly most of the suggestions I’ve read in this thread all sound pretty solid to me. It’s nice that these are all finally real possibilities to talk about and not complete fantasy

    I’d be okay with that lineup when Springer needs a break from CF. With this lineup, are both Jansen and Kirk riding the pine, though? I think I just look at this lineup and feel we could upgrade 2B and 3B for about the same money as you’d give Freeman and get better positional versatility. I think Bryant works for 3B/OF for 20-25/aav and they could use biggio and Kirk in a package for Marte. Those two together cost the same as Freeman, but lockdown two spots in the lineup for next year and can play in the OF when guys like Teoscar and Gurriel leave, and kids like Moreno and Martinez are easy for the infield. If you can dump Grichuk in this scenario, then Marte’s contract is covered and you can spend the rest of the available payroll on a backend starter like Kikuchi. That would be my ideal scenario, but I’m also not sure if another 9 figure deal on the team could affect our ability to keep both Vlad and Bo long term.

    I think it’s only a challenge if Moreno smashes the door down this year and can’t be ignored. If he stays down for all of this year in AAA, then we’d still have Bryant for third. If Jansen craps the bed, then Moreno may just be our catcher if the future. If Jansen is decent, maybe we start considering an extension for him and move Moreno to 3B for 2023. Bryant can split time in left with Gurriel and third in 2023, and even get some DH reps. Then when Gurriel walks, Bryant is our left fielder the last few years of his contract. We could also trade an outfielder at the deadline if Moreno arrives early. I’d love to have Freeman, but not sure they’d want him and Vladdy being forced to DH all the time when they seem to like the flexibility of moving other guys there for rest. Definitely won’t cry if they actually pursue this route though. Would be a great F U to everyone in the East if we added Freeman to that lineup

    I don’t think getting Bryant means Moreno isn’t the the 3B of the future. We also don’t know whether Jansen took a step forward at the end of last season with that hot streak or not. Moreno could be a guy that splits time between both positions and Bryant could see days at DH or the OF. I’d look at signing Bryant as meaning we’re not likely to extend Gurriel, Teoscar or both potentially.

    What would it cost to get McNeil though? Would it be him straight up for Kirk? More? Less?

    I think I’d prefer the Jays go for Marte. Takes a similar package but you get an extra year of control for a guy who can play multiple positions. Depending on payroll I’d try to do that and add someone like Bryant for 3B/OF. He can man the hot corner and if Jansen locks down catcher and Moreno looks ready for third, Bryant can play in the outfield a bit. Ideally we could find a taker for Grichuk which would cover most of Marte’s contract. I just think if there’s legitimacy to the Jays being in on Seager, then I’d rather pay the same plus a few prospects to cover two holes with solid players instead of one hole for a stud.

    This is exactly what I’ve wanted for a few years now. Never really loved the sudden death wild card game but love the idea of a division winner picking their opponent in the first round.

    Everything I’ve seen says 11:59pm EST is when the lockout starts. Hopefully that means there’s enough time between tonight and tomorrow morning to get signs/trades done with physicals before the deadline.

    The lockout starts at 11:59pm tomorrow doesn’t it? So I’d assume medicals could be taken through the day, just likely no new deals to announce.

    Was looking at his stats yesterday and my jaw hit the floor when I saw he was worth 2.5 war in just over 200AB. Gotta be that glove. I’d love to put him over at second if it means Bryant signs with us. Protects bichette in that infield too

    I do like Biggio and think he’s a good role player on the team. I just think he has better value as a trade piece and would help us hold onto one of our better prospects in any deal. I wouldn’t be upset if we held onto him either, though.

    If biggio is part of that trade, I’d assume Espinal holds down third until Moreno is ready. Or since Marte is cheap, you could try to sign Bryant for third

    I’d love Alcantara but I can’t imagine the Marlins extending him just to trade him. Bad optics

    I’d offer him the Springer contract. Maybe some sort of club option on a 6th year but wouldn’t go beyond that. They’re about the same age at free agency and similar WAR over their careers

    Yea their stance is pretty ridiculous. I’m all for players getting paid, but I don’t get how the PA can scream about service time issues and then complain about extensions to young players in the same breath. They’re set for life in their 20s, still get a shot a big payday in their early 30s and give the team some payroll flexibility to build around them. All that for a couple of seasons of solid production thus far.
