  1. Just checked. Wiki says his 23rd birthday was July 5th this year. So I guess since it was after the signing period opened, he would have to wait until midway through next year to sign with someone freely? I wonder if his current team would accept that request if he asked for it. I doubt they would, IMO
  2. Yeah, he's been killing it for the past month. It's likely just been a hot streak and nothing more, but I'd like to see him get a chance to prove himself in the bigs. Martin will probably miss some extended periods next year and I think McGuire could at least provide a steady presence behind the dish instead of constantly rotating through guys all year.
  3. Yeah, I could see MLB wanting to do that to get a guy like him, but I wonder if they'd want to deal with the fallout from other amateur international players and their agents for playing favourites. I do wonder about how long teams and players have to wait before signing extensions, though. Does anyone know how this process works? Is it something like a full season or could a guy, in theory, sign an extension after the first game of the season?
  4. I'd like to see McGuire get a shot. He's been raking since joining NH and could be a good backup option next year.
  5. So apparently the Dodgers sent 8 guys to watch Otani over the weekend. Obviously, everyone knows they'll be all in on him, but what's interesting is that they're restricted to giving out int'l bonuses of $300K max this year. It got me wondering about how teams will bid for his services. Do you think the signing bonus will be a non-factor in landing him? Or do you think teams will be trying to trade for more cap space to offer him the biggest bonus possible? I tend to think the latter. I think he'd take a small bonus if it's a team that can win, he wants to play there, and offers him the most perks (perhaps with some sort of verbal agreement for a massive contract the folllowing season?)
  6. It does suck that the power seems to have disappeared right now, but he has hit .270 with 10 doubles and a .340OBP over the past month, and a lot of that production has come in the last 10 days. Hopefully with personal issues behind him we see him hit a few long balls in the final two weeks and finish the year on a high note.
  7. Huh, yeah I noticed that Dawson was relieving, too, but that didn't seem surprising. I hope it's not a permanent move for Rios, though. He's taken a step back this year, but at 22 in his first year at AA, you'd think he'd get one more shot.
  8. Anyone know what's up with Francisco Rios? Thought he was a starter, but seems to have been doing a lot of relief outings lately (not good ones at that). Is he coming back from an injury?
  9. Yeah I agree that our rotation should probably be the #1 priority. However, going into next season as is, it seems like our offense will be relying heavily on Donaldson and Smoak. While I agree with you that our infield lacks depth, I also feel that our outfield needs a bump offensively and defensively and I'm not sure the bunch you mentioned really help move the needle on that first part. Honestly, I've mainly been in the rebuild camp for most of this season because it seems like there are a lot of holes to fill this offseason. I'm hoping since the order came from ownership to stay competitive, it might mean they up payroll a little more and maybe Shatkins can also pull off a shrewd trade or two.
  10. Yea I messed up the years of control. I was looking at Dee Gordon earlier, too, and mixed up their contracts in my head. But yeah, if I could do it without sacrificing one of our top 3 prospects, I'd grab Yelich for the reasons you stated. Just a better overall skill set than Pillar.
  11. I agree using him as a starter isn't realistic if you're trying to compete in 2018. I think I'd utilize him as a 4th outfielder and target, as others have suggested, JD Martinez in FA. JD, Alford and Pillar is a pretty decent outfield both offensively and defensively. I also wouldn't mind looking at what the Marlins want for Yelich if the package could be built around Pillar. An outfield of JD, Alford and Yelich would be pretty nice to watch next year.
  12. Yeah, definitely risky but that's the sorta proposition I'm hoping the Jays are considering.
  13. Good point, but hasn't he been the one asking his team to post him despite the rules? I think they've just been reluctant because they still have years of control left on him.
  14. Ah okay. I thought there was something about a max offer now. Is this because he's under 23?
  15. Anyone know much about this Ryan Gold kid in Bluefield? Catcher hitting around .300 with a .370OBP and is 19years old which seems age appropriate for the level. He seems to have a high BABIP, so I can't figure out if he's been lucky in his first two seasons or he's just squaring up the ball for hard singles. Anyone know anything about his defense and if he could be a legit prospect?
  16. I believe it's around 20mill but then you've still gotta figure out what a reasonable contract for the player is. At least the Jays have some leverage over half the league by being able to offer him the DH spot on his non pitching days. Hopefully the allure of being a superstar for a team that, in a way, represents a country and not just a city might have some influence on him, too. That is, as long as the contract offer itself is competitive.
  17. That's my #1 target if he's posted in the offseason. I think the Jays may be able to justify eating a decent chunk of Morales' contract with the thought of Otani basically being paid to fill two roster spots (pitch one day, DH 3-4 other days).
  18. I kinda hope they try and bring back Liriano for next year. Preferably in a relief/spot start role though. I think he'd be a good fit in that role if the Jays can put together a stronger starting 5 for 2018.
  19. I don't know if it would've been that steep considering the A's took a package with a lot of potential but is quite damaged right now. I think that deal with Hernandez instead of Alford might have been enough.
  20. Gotta say I like the trades we made today. The only thing I would've liked to see was a run at Gray. Seemed like a good retooling target, especially if the Jays could've used some of those prospects they got today to avoid pillaging their own farm.
  21. Yeah didn't mean to imply it would be a straight dump, just don't think it would necessarily be a farm crippler either. I'm more for the rebuild than the retool anyways. I don't see a lot of FA talent this offseason that will keep this team contending. But if Rogers is firm on wanting to contend, then they'd better be prepared to pay because they will need to upgrade the offense big time. That's why my mind has wandered to a guy like Stanton. Figured his contract might suppress his prospect value
  22. Would it cost the farm to get him though, if the Jays were willing to take on the entire contract? Not arguing it wouldn't as the guy is an elite hitter, but I just recall reading an article about a lot of teams thinking the price won't be too high if the acquiring team takes on his whole salary.
  23. I'd say our outfield is a big place for improvement next year and the Marlins may be opening the floodgates once they sell the team. I read somewhere a lot of execs believe they would trade Stanton in an almost pure salary dump. If the Jays were comfortable taking on the contract, what do you think the cost would be to acquire him and Yelich? If we could pull the trigger on a deal like that and go hard after a top starter, we'd be setup for 2018 and beyond.
  24. Would the Yanks want to improve at third? Maybe Smoak and Donaldson for a package centred around Torres plus?
  25. Well I'm only saying this if the jays sell off veteran assets this year for younger guys. If the rebuild is a 2-3 year process, a guy like Otani would make sense even if it's this offseason that he's posted. Harper is more of a pipe dream, I'd just like to see this team make some noise somewhere in that crop of free agents. Anyways, the Jays have some decent positional prospects in the system, it's more pitching they need to target.
