    The Red Sox won the World Series with an overachieving veteran team in 2013, and were one of the worst teams in baseball in 2014. They dumped pending free agents like Lester, Andrew Miller, etc. and gave playing time to future assets like Jackie Bradley (who was considered garbage at the time)--but didn't touch the major league core. They won the division 2 years later and are still favourites to win the division this year. The Yankees made the playoffs in 2015, sold off assets in 2016 and are a respectable team again. Once you flip the switch on an cheap controllable asset like Donaldson and Stroman, there's no turning back for many years.

    As truly great a player as Machado is, I would be extremely wary of dropping a franchise-altering contract on a repeatedly verified piece of s***.

    This is a very straightforward exercise. You calculate the value of a first overall pick over a 15th overall pick and compare it to the lost attendance, television, and other revenue of a .500 team over the worst team in baseball. Tanking to obtain an incremental increase in draft position for a team that just led the league in attendance and has the largest television market in baseball makes ludicrously bad business sense. We can build for the future without carpet bombing all the positive value the franchise has built up.

    "The team has mostly hunted college pitching in the draft for the last five to eight years but is under new management now." Which is almost certainly not true. AA had a high-ceiling draft philosophy where he targeted mostly raw high school arms (Sanchez, Norris, Syndergaard, Nicolino) mixed with some high-upside college arms (Hoffman, Stroman). Longerhagen might have been referring to Ricciardi's preference for college arms, which was certainly true, or he just misspoke.

    This is the medical term for a neck muscle strain. Often caused by simple things such as a strenuous workout, pore posture, etc. It could be the consequence of a more serious downstream injury to the shoulder but this is unlikely.

    Upton can play OF defence so he's not a great fit for the O's.

    If he's willing to play around the diamond, he's a highly valuable asset on a contending team. Excluding defense and baserunning, his bat alone is an immediate upgrade over garbage like Carerra and Smoak. (This says more about us than about Wong). If Travis has extended DL trips over the year, Wong becomes a crucial asset. If his price tag is cheap, he deserves our attention.

    This is a smart calculated risk by the Tigers, but Gose doesn't have the makeup to succeed at any role in the majors, and he's at an age where we can't expect him to grow out of it anymore. I suspect he'll wear out his welcome as a pitcher by the end of the year.

    In a sense the ChiSox are buying high and assuming risk, but I can see the reasoning here. If Anderson busts, they flushed $25 mill down the toilet. If he becomes a star, they get big surplus from his two free agent years. I wouldn't have done this deal, but it's probably moderate-risk, high-reward.

    AA wasn't paying for two months of Price, he was paying for two months of Price and a chance at the World Series and a long-term revenue boost. If you're at that end of the win curve at the trade deadline, a good GM makes that trade 10 times out of 10 and accepts the risk of the prospects turning into stars.

    Rays are covering his peak defensive years and protecting themselves if he breaks out offensively. Buying out 2 free agent years alone will be worth much of that contract.

    The NFL and NBA suspend players all the time for legal but immoral behaviour off the field. The MLB suspended John Rocker for a month for making offensive comments about gays and minorities, which was not only completely legal, but protected under the First Amendment. Like any business, the MLB is protecting its brand. If you want to be employed and paid by the MLB, you have to behave in whatever manner they deem appropriate.

    JP Ricciardi's "analytics" drafting philosophy did irreparable damage to the farm during his tenure. In the early 2000s, the SABR community didn't recognize the importance of the hit tool and decided that high school pitchers had no value (Billy Beane famously threw a chair at his development team for drafting Jeremy Bonderman and traded him immediately).     Neither Hoffman or Norris should be moved unless it's for a true ace or a impact position player. Even a Chapman-level closer isn't worth it. If you have to choose one, you stick with the one closer to the majors. Given that Hoffman already has 1 TJS under his belt and Norris 0, it's a no brainer.
