  1. I think it has more to do with it being a completely pointless part of the game. Kind of like the extra point in football used to be. The NFL was able to make it more meaningful/challenging, whereas MLB is simply going to eliminate it. Personally, I'd like to see MLB focus on the catcher/pitching coach visits to the mound. I do think efforts to reduce the game time will be a benefit long term.
  2. But data shows that umpires have been increasingly calling strikes on so many pitches below the knees that, if umpires enforce the redefined strike zone, it would effectively raise the zone by an estimated 2 inches. If the umps can't call the strike zone correctly now - what on earth makes them think they will if they change the strike zone? (or do they have evidence to suggest they'll be more accurate if it's the top of the knee?) I like eliminating the 4 pitch intentional walk. That's what our league does.
  3. I don't see anything in Cron's history to suggest he'll ever be an above average ML player. I see no reason to trade for him with Rowdy near ready.
  4. Coghlan/Upton in LF, Pearce at 1st. Coghlan is likely even cheaper than Carter at this point and is a year removed from a 3.3 WAR season. Carter doesn't have that upside.
  5. If you combine 2015 and 2016 Upton (while on the Padres), he's a 3 WAR player over a full season (playing similar to 2012 Upton). I don't believe he was being platooned in SD, so there is upside here. Much like Pompey (and Pillar) he could bring a lot of value to this team simply by playing good defense and running the bases well. Bring in Coghlan as the 4th OF/insurance and jettison Zeke to AAA.
  6. If I'm not mistaken, I think Upton really only excelled vs. LHP last year....he isn't a true platoon bat. And doesn't Zeke hit LHP better than RHP (while hitting neither very well?). Coghlan's the guy here. Cheap deal.....Zeke to AAA.
  7. I think between Upton and Pompey - LF is covered. Screw Zeke. I still think Upton will be much better this year now that he's had an opportunity to adjust more. Coghlan is still out there too. He posted 3.3 and 2.4 WAR seasons in 2015 and 2014. Appears he'll be dirt cheap and is LH. He seems like a good fit.
  8. Aaron Barrett looks like a great guy to target. The Nats are signing anyone and everyone to a minor league deal...why did they let this guy go?
  9. You'd think Carter and Alvarez would work extensively to become adequate defensively...it might help them get a job. 1st base isn't that challenging guys. Put the work in.
  10. stat scouting him here... http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=8245&position=P His fastball average was down to 85 MPH last year and it appears he's dropped his usage of that, while increasing the usage of his curveball. However, Pitch Values suggests his fastball is above average, while his curve and change are below average? I can't imagine anyone's 85 MPH fastball being above average. Certainly appears the results are there - even if he does it with smoke and mirrors.
  11. Seriously - is there anything lower than misplays of the month? Janitor?
  12. Um....I envisioned him joining Marilyn and giving lessons on how to knit, cook and spring clean your house...Kind of like how Cabbie did when he got canned (only Barry would actually fit in).
  13. That is by far the best Barry Davis moment. I fully expect he's joining the Marilyn Dennis Show where he'll fit in 100 times better than he did with the Jays.
  14. Well she clearly has low standards then Term. Perhaps to your benefit.
  15. ughhh....you'd think they'd realise just giving out the standard shirseys would be a better idea??? Maybe they realise the vast majority of the public won't realise how s***** the replica jerseys are and will target those games to ensure they get them anyway (even if they are disappointed afterwards). I hate marketing.
  16. Meh - that's not too bad. They look paper thin and really cheap, but at least they aren't plastered with Rogers or Honda logos. Unfortunately, they don't look good enough to proudly wear to future games and thus are a dud IMO. Why can't they just get a bunch of the Chinese jersey you can get off the internet for $40 and double check they spell everything correct and such.
  17. Jose Fernandez was one of the best pitchers who ever touched a baseball. Let's not use him as the example please. It's like saying Pujols adjusted well straight out of A ball so let's try it with Alford.
  18. Whoa....they might regret that one if there's a blown call or unusual ruling against the Jays!
  19. What do the replica jersey's look like? Are they s***? At face value, those seem like the premier giveaways.
  20. Or they could just tell the PA to f*** off.
  21. My god Osuna is ugly.
  22. I went probably 7 years ago. At that time, everyone was there except Vernon Wells. Meeting Doc was simply the best. It's a great event. One tip is they say something about only being able to bring 2 things to get "signed", but there were guys with entire cases of balls. I tried to follow the rules, so I have one ball with Doc's autograph and another ball with everyone elses
  23. Massive risk - seeing as he's coming off the "Maness" elbow surgery. That said - worth a spring invite!
  24. Given the haul that Andrew Miller and Chapman netted the Yanks last year (couple of top 30 prospects), the White Sox should hold him, hope for a bounce back season and trade him at the deadline. I mean he's not Chapman or Miller, but he's been a dominate pitcher throughout his career. There's absolutely no reason to trade him for some non-prospect while eating salary.....the Sox aren't financially strapped, they're just rebuilding. New topic.
  25. They should have made it their first pick in the 2017 draft and a 1st round in the 2018 draft...not actually giving up a top 50 pick is a bit of a joke.
