We need Jomboy to investigate. IIRC, rumors came out about the Astros trash can cheating and it was Jomboy who sifted through all the video and provided the very damning evidence. Jomboy is the hero we need.

I've pitched for 30 years and unless it was raining or the ball was wet (because it was raining) - I've never once felt like I had issues gripping the ball and I never used rosin. Then again, I probably topped out at 75-80 MPH

He never was bad. He just started the season slow and was fighting through an injury. -
Grichuk has been a negative defender the past 4 years (although playing 'out of position in CF' hasn't helped). He's in the 20th percentile for Outs Above Average and in the 9th percentile for Outfield Jumps. He's also been awful on the base paths this year. I'm not sure that's going to make up for those long cold stretches where he hits like Ryan Goins. The only reason you really consider it is because of how bad defensively Gurriel has been. I fully expect he'll continue to get lots of playing time - but I don't think he should be locked into the starting lineup once we get Springer back.

Grichuk since May 8th 88 wRC+ 2.2 BB% 25.2 K% Tellez since May 8th 111 wRC+ 9.0 BB% 19.2 K% It will be interesting to see if we cut Grichuk's playing time when Springer returns (assuming he returns and plays CF). Predictably, Grichuk has gone cold and all the adjustments that Buck drools over each night aren't sustainable and/or don't matter. It's like clockwork.

I think it's a fair take. I think there's room for optimism for sure. I clearly remember them talking about how he changed his approach at the plate and that didn't work at all and lead to a horrible year in AA. He clearly has lots of tools (power, speed and very good defense IIRC) and players, more than ever, now have all the information necessary to make tangible adjustments to their swings/approaches to maximize those tools. Let's hope he keeps it up and becomes a player.

This is accurate, but I will say that more often then not, he uses facts and is generally correct. That said, in this case, I'll say I think he's a little off base.

Do you watch every team play? How else do you use the ole eye test to claim they are the worst in baseball? Maybe you could use the ole eye test to know there are plenty of avenues to voice or pile on your disgruntled view on the bullpens performance. A new thread for this is a bad as our bullpen.

I'm with Jim on this. Although it was in the rule book, they have been blatantly ignoring it for years - just like they did with steroids (although I guess one might argue that 'not using steroids' wasn't technically in the rule book at the time). We've all seen videos of pitchers applying sunscreen in the bullpen during a night game - the league has seen that - they did nothing about it for a very long time. I was preaching like 2-3 years ago that teams would be developing something even better than sunscreen and rosin and it would become a competitive advantage. I'm not that smart so clearly the league aught to have expected this.

Why didn't MLB establish this new protocol/suspensions/fines at the start of the year? They thought if they asked nicely that people would just stop using it?

Exactly - and with his extension, that 97 looks/feels like 103 at the knees. The guy is a freak of nature.

Agreed - it's really unfortunate. The guy has one of the best arms and stuff I've ever seen. I love watching him pitch.

The hitters due up is a decent argument - but the statistics apparently suggest that over the long run, this strategy is best one. The goal is to win the game - not extend it.

Dude - there's an article like 3 posts above that explains the math and probability. The ghost runner 10th inning rule has changed the approach. The reality is you probably don't disagree with it because you have recency bias because it failed last night. I suspect that if Romano pitched a clean 9th and we lost in the 10th with Dolis on the mound, a large majority of fans would bitch about that decision too (and maybe rightfully so, as the numbers suggest you need a lights out guy for the 10th inning).

I agree with this - as long as umpires are checking for it at the start of every inning. It should be a pretty simple check of the hat, glove, arms and neck. Won't interrupt the game. What I don't want to see now is managers having to go tell the umpire that they think the pitcher is using a foreign substance and have them inspect it mid-inning. That said, if the umpire sees a trend (of going to his forearm or whatever) then they should stop the game and check.

I don't know how fair it is to assume every quality right handed college pitcher selected in the first round is going to become Deck McGuire. 6'4", sits 94, peaks at 96-97. Excellent control, 4 pitches (saw someone suggest they are all graded 50+), great results.

Those were called long men - they came in after the starter got lit up. They often were marginal/s***** pitchers and sometimes they could string together 3-4 decent innings to "keep the team in it". We don't want Pearson to be that guy. But, more often then not, we're only getting 5 or 6 out of starters on a good day, so Pearson could be a guy who comes in and gives you 3-4 shut down innings when we have the lead. That's piggybacking. I'm all for that. -
Of course they would. Why show fans we have better stats to evaluate ability?
