  1. Would your rather have Rodon for 4 years $60M and Jon Gray for 3 years $45M or Robbie Ray for 6 years $130M? I think Rodon and Gray have enough upside that I'd rather the depth.
  2. What type of contract will it take to land him? 3 year $45M?
  3. Let's not act like agents have absolutely no idea of the range their clients should expect on the open market.
  4. With Matz signing 4 years $44M - Do we think he would have accepted a QO if offered? Does he leave $26M on the table and risk that he'll stay effective and healthy? My guess is he would have accepted the QO. I think an AAV in the $13M+ range (assuming he was getting 4 years) would have been the breaking point.
  5. I think you're discounting the fact that Yates was one of the best (top 5) relievers in baseball in 2018 and 2019. The reward was absolutely massive, but, evidently, there was a lot of risk we wouldn't get much out of him. The risk in terms of $$$'s wasn't prohibitive at all. Yates was a lottery ticket man - nothing more.
  6. Good teams need 8-9 starters each year. Also he provided us with 2.8 WAR last year, which was 46th overall in MLB last year (for pitchers). He finished ahead of Ryu, Bieber, Sonny Gray, Pablo Lopez and just behind Yu Darvish and Ohtani. While he may pencil in as our #5 to start the year, he may spend a portion of the year as our 3rd best starter. He may also finish the year out of the rotation. I'm all for adding Ray or Gausman (or both if we somehow have the cash), but you can't just discount the value of depth in the rotation.
  7. https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/does-one-knee-catching-actually-lead-to-more-wild-pitches/ I don't have access, but I suspect the answer is it doesn't lead to more wild pitches. This video does a good job of explaining why it's done. They explain the traditional stance gives the ump a point of reference, whereas the knee down eliminates that and gives the ump a better view.
  8. Have we all forgotten all the drama around this guy already? It was like 2 weeks ago people. He's a f***ing clown.
  9. I will admit I'm just now learning some of the nuances of catching as my middle son wants to become a catcher - but I think there are lots of catchers who are on 1 knee with runners on base and/or 2 strikes. And I know this because every time it happens, Buck Martinez has to comment on it and complain about what catchers are being taught because it's not the old school approach.
  10. I applaud your aggressiveness.
  11. jesus christ.
  12. David Ortiz, Alex Rodriguez, and Jimmy Rollins are among the first-time eligible players on the 2022 Baseball Hall of Fame ballot. The other first-time eligible players include Carl Crawford, Prince Fielder, Ryan Howard, Tim Lincecum, Justin Morneau, Joe Nathan, Jonathan Papelbon, Jake Peavy, A.J. Pierzynski, and Mark Teixeira. Ortiz is most likely among this group to actually get in on the first ballot. With the holdovers, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Curt Schilling are all eligible for the 10th and final time while Scott Rolen and Billy Wagner will hope to pick up some momentum. Hall of Fame ballots from BBWAA writers are due Dec. 31 with an announcement to follow on Jan. 25. ----------------------- This is going to be a pretty interesting year for the HOF voting. Last year for Barry, Roger and Curt - Rolen and Wagner are inching closer and how you add in a slew of solid new candidates. Curious to see what voters do with Papi and A-Rod.
  13. You might be trapped in 2006. One knee and starting the glove low and working 'up' to the ball is how it's taught these days for 'reasons'.
  14. Let's get Buck to talk about prospects. That will go over well.
  15. Just like Anthony Alford!
  16. and he was coming off a horrible year in A+ ball (30% K%, 103 wRC+)
  17. Based on my 5 seconds of stat scouting - I think FG is out to lunch. This guy was awful in A ball as a 22 year old. Unless he's Yadi defensively, I can see why the Rays left him unprotected.
  18. I think they need to keep Pearson around as one of their depth starters...whether he's pitching 2-3 innings per outing out of the pen, or is starting in AAA. They need to have 8-9 starters available and I don't think they have enough options in the upper minors right now. Stripling and Pearson as their 6th and 7th starters is a pretty good start. I guess Hatch may be an option also?
  19. Seems odd they would add Leo and not Samad.
  20. How was Hill after the spider tack crackdown? I assumed that was one of the reasons he was able to turn his career around in the first place. Dick Mountain is a great guy, but I'm not sure he has much left.
  21. Um....internal improvement? We're young team with several core pieces who should all maintain or improve. Healthy Biggio, full season of Manoah, full seasons from Jansen/Kirk, arrival of Moreno and it's likely we haven't seen the peak for Vlad, Bo, Teo, Gurriel, Biggio, Romano, Pearson, Manoah, etc.
  22. Add Jon Gray to this list. Gray and Kikuchi are 2 of the best 'upside' plays available (who won't cost $20M AAV). I wouldn't be upset if we signed both to fill out the rotation. I like Lorenzen as a pen arm also.
  23. Gausman's essentially a 2 pitch pitcher too....
  24. I assumed he was being facetious as some of these proposed signings are getting a little out of hand (like landing Scherzer and Verlander)
  25. Probably for a good 4-5 years (how much better is up for debate) - but tough to say how A-Rod's defense would have been at SS into his mid to late 30's
