    He's a FA at the end of teh season. Also, he will almost certainly pitch out of the bullpen with the possibility of being an insurance starter if one of the current starters(and maybe Hutchison too) go down.

    Cashner would have been a good gamble if he had more years of control. Even now it might be okay if we put him in the bullpen even though he reportedly doesn't want to be a reliever.

    you don't give up anything for players from the scrap heap. I confess to not knowing anything about Rodriguez, but he's only 19 and doesn't have enough of a history of failure to be discounted completely. So he's a lottery ticket and even that to me is too much to give up for a bum like Upton

    Well i respect that, i think we're just looking at things from different perspectives. To me this is like the Smoak deal, i just don't get why we're bothering with fringe guys, whether we might actually get a couple of million in extra value(and that's literally what the projection say) that will make it worth Rodriguez is almost irrelevant because its still a fringe guy. Guys like Smoak and Upton should be picked up off the scrap heap, not offered extensions nor should you give up anything for these bums.

    You're right, i should be falling in line. The facts after all are so obvious and not at litigable. We acquired a bench player that is projected to give you maybe a couple of million in extra value in exchange for a prospect. If he plays 200 games that's about 1.1 WAR according to the projections. Is there excess value that would make it worth trading Rodriguez? Maybe, but i think people are missing the point. This is a good example of fans getting so caught up in the details that they're not seeing the big picture. And that is, like the Smoak extension, once again Shapiro and Atkins went out of their for a fringe guy with no upside and actually invested resources on them. Why is that supposed to make me feel good? Smoak and Upton are trash, these are not the type of player you give up anything for and you definitely don't give them contracts or trade them.

    because Upton sucks? I don't like Upton one bit, but the money coming is nice, i don't know anything about Hansel Rodriguez though . I don't even like the idea of giving up a lottery ticket type of guy for Upton

    Rajai Davis: 1.3 Austin Jackson: 1.1 Jon Jay: 1.3 Matt Joyce: 2.4 Seth Smith: 1.8 Franklin Gutierrez: 1.1 The math was done off the top of my head, so they might be off by a bit. And with guys like Seth Smith and Matt Joyce its not completely fair to extrapolate their war over 162 because they've traditionally been used as platoon guys but the point is i don't think Upton is a guy we should go out of our way to invest in(with money or even throwaway c prospects) and i believe there are better value options in FA and via trade in the offseason.

    Like i pointed out before, the projections have him at 0.8 WAR/162 moving forward I think all of these guys would be better buck for the money as short term investments than wasting $15 million pn Upton, assuming Padres eat $10 million, which i'm pretty skeptical of. I haven't included a few guys whose options might be picked up. And at a higher AAV you could get guys like Moss and Fowler on a 1 year or 2 year deal that would bring more value than Upton.     You're right, lets see if he can keep this up, it is only 17 IP after all but if he or Atkins really did see something in Grilli then they should deserve credit.

    Honestly, i was always skeptical of AA's shortsightedness and not at all sad to see him go, and was so excited about Shapiro. However, the moves under his watch have been pretty poor. I like the fact that he's strengthened the front office and made investments in things like player performance and psych science but actual baseball moves have been pretty bad or just meh at best. I can't think of a single move that made me go "f*** Yeah!, that makes sense"

    If the Padres are paying 90% of his salary and we're looking at him as a bench bat then yeah there's nothing to get too mad about but other people here seem to want him to start and the Padres are not gonna eat that much salary. The projections have him at ~0.8 WAR/162 games moving forward and he's owed $25 million over a season and a half. Like Smoak, why are we even talking about investing in fringe guys like this.

    His K% is only a couple of points aways from that threshold(30%, varies depending on how many walks you draw and how much power you hti for) where you can't be a decent offensive contributor. Given his current walk rate and power, it won't take take that many more K's for him to revert back to 2013-2014 levels of awfulness. This is not a guy you can rely on.

    There's probably atleast half a dozen guys here who you could get on 1 year/short term deals who are also better players than that useless f*** Upton.

    Except i have been citing projections from the beginning, which agree with me, even if you heavily weigh the last 2 years the outlook moving forward doesn't look good at all.

    I think this is a good example of fans trying to talk themselves into a bad deal because they like the management in question. Upton by the only objective metrics we possess(projections) would be a terrible investment of money, let alone a prospect and yet we're trying to make ourselves feel better with cherry picked stats.

    recency bias, he was also one of the worst players in baseball two years running in 2013 and 2014, he could easily revert back to that. Not a whole lot about his game and profile as a hitter have actually changed.

    Smoak is projected for a 98 wRC+, Upton is at 84 wRC+, that's nowhere close to "almost as good as". And Smoak is useless because he can't play a position, Upton is useless because his bat isn't good enough. People are only looking at the last few hundred plate appearances with Upton and overestimating his ability. His track record is not good, nor will his mediocre defence make up for unreliable bat.

    I say pass on Melvin Upton BTW, he's not reliable. Pojections have him with a 84 wRC+ going forward and a non contributor defensively, that's considerably worse than Pompey. I'll be disappointed at Shapiro and Atkins if we do indeed get him, they can't coast on their reputation forever, at some point you have show people that you're not idiots but they keep making stupid decisions like the Smoak extension last week.

    he's never been good though, people just think his defence is good because he's a horrible hitter, that's a weird thing baseball fans do, not just Jays fans.

    The Yankees did well given they really only had about 3 trading partners theoritically (the Indians and the Nats being the other two) who would give up the kind of return they want. Only a team that is a surefire division winner can afford to overpay for a guy like Chapman because of his impact in the post season. It doesn't make sense for anyone else. We'll see what happens if they do decide to move Miller and Betances and what kind of return they'd get for them now. Now that the Cubs have their ultra dominant reliever, who are the teams willing to pay a king's ransom for one ?
