"High payroll" also has no limits when the stupid MLB thinks the luxury tax line at $189MM is appropriate. It allows teams with large pockets and big revenue to be so flexible with any contract that it's borderline stupid. It doesn't mean they are trying to buy championships but more likely that they are incapable of managing such big money. With that in mind, it's hard to define success with high payrolls when only 2 teams are exceeding what MLB considers acceptable spending limits.

    Giants did pretty good.

Yea I listened to most of it. I'd like him to explain why players were willing to defer money to try and land Santana, who they desperately wanted and clearly weren't getting more from Rogers for.

    This isn't true.

Right. Except I'd prefer Hardy over most 2B options avail this year. I like a guy who's put up all of his stats playing out of the East and one of the better defensive options on the market. Add to that his lower cost seems like a good fit.

If they can land Hardy, moving Reyes to 2B would be a solid upgrade all around at an affordable cost. AA probably wants to save face and fears talking to Reyes about that move.

You don't think they've drafted better since? Giving them away is another discussion.

Thanks for the info, I'll give that some weight next time I value managers.

Last fall AA said we need to upgrade second base & starting pitching. Almost had Santana & Kinsler (golf clap), instead we got Chris Getz, Steve Tolleson and Juan Francisco. Long term DL stints happened, weeks later we get Valencia & Reimold. No staff additions, no relief help, no second basemen. Blame lack of money, crap stadium, or AA... they are all interconnected imo. Turf needs to be addressed (I know it's coming), reserve funds need to be there, and AA has to grow a pair.

At the very least, Izturis would be starting over Kawasaki.

Maddux had 7 seasons in a row of 200IP with sub 3.00 ERA. 2 of those back-to-back with sub 2.00 ERA (1.56, 1.63). These are better than Kershaw numbers for 400IP+.

Maddux's career was simply locked in beastmode status. I think he used the Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start cheat code to unlock God mode.

    They are now.

Because a DH simply can't be the MOST VALUABALE PLAYER in the league lol!! I don't know his WAR but it can't be anywhere near the leaders.
  20. Governator
lol Victor Martinez? No way a DH is even in the talks. Trout, Kluber, Bautista for AL

2014 AL Teams by Wins Above Replacement http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/team_compare.cgi?year=2014&lg=AL&stat=WAR Highlight Toronto from the dropdown. Compare each position, at the bottom of the table is the league's WAR averages / team. Much thanks to Colby's steller season we're 2nd to last in CF WAR in the AL. 2B and relief pitching is pretty rough, 3B isn't as bad as you're putting it according to this.

Just caught up with the game vids. LOL @ Gibbons challenging the Tolleson grounder in the 8th while up by 11 after an incredible play by Seattle's SS.
