if we tailspin out of the playoff race and drop 10 in a row it'll be from an offensive crash like what happened in June not because we didn't upgrade Happ.

Maybe they've recognized that 1 ace isn't winning them a world series regardless of payroll. Maybe they've used their level heads to understand they have some good high level prospects and hanging on to them isn't a bad move. Maybe they also know that they can fire sell the core team and rebuild around their young studs in the event of an utter failure in late September. That standing pat has equal chances of success at this stage in the many trade proposals that center around Stroman.

Teams don't do that often because every FA signing afterward will require no trade restrictions to sign with your loose cannon GM.

Agreed. I'm happy if they can just acquire a 7/8 inning BP arm which shouldn't dent the system much. If things don't work out this season I want the option to blow things up with dynamite and have the young studs to build around.
