  1. I don't even blame Gibbons for this. No reason to tender Zeke a contract, much less give him over a mil to produce replacement level performance when the OF market is cheap as dirt right now. I was always expecting Gibby to platoon those two (one bats left, the other bats right, numbers be damned). The front office could have avoided it though.
  2. Maybe a team will claim him thinking he's Alex Rios circa 2006.
  3. Manfred making Bud Selig look like the greatest commish of all time.
  4. Justin Smoak better be a late bloomer. Rarely see such a low AAV by baseball standards ($4m) look so terrible.
  5. My god....Manfred is an idiot.
  6. I think they might option him because they don't want to lose Sparkman and they can't really afford to lose Bolsinger. So that puts the pen as Osuna, Grilli, Howell, Smith, Bolsinger, and Sparkman. If Biagini starts in the bigs instead of AAA, then that's your 7 guys right there. If Biagini starts in AAA as a SP, then that opens up a spot for Loup. I think Floyd as a RP has potential. Just call up Loup after Floyd's arm falls off.
  7. Loup has an option left I think so he may not be a lock. If Biagini starts in AAA: Osuna, Grilli, Howell, Smith, Floyd, Bolsinger, Sparkman If Biagini starts in the bigs: Osuna, Grilli, Howell, Smith, Biagini, Bolsinger, Sparkman
  8. Sure, and the football season is shorter too so the games mean more. My point was fans don't care how long a game is as long as they are a fan of the sport. Baseball is not going to attract fans by shortening games. The length of the game might be the most trivial part of the game since all major sports run 3 hours, or close to it. If baseball accepted its regional relevancy then this wouldn't be an issue. If they want to be more mainstream and attract more eyeballs to the game then it will require much more than shortening games by a few minutes a night. Mike Trout is one of the greatest players of this generation and non fans or even fans of other teams probably wouldn't be able to spot him in a crowd. That's the issues MLB needs to fix.
  9. Why not? They could still use umps for the bases since they can challenge safe/out calls, but fixing the calls at the plate should be a top priority.
  10. Manfred isn't fixing the issues. Baseball's popularity isn't going to sky rocket because the game is 2:55 long rather than 3:00 long. Football games are long as hell with seemingly twice as many commercials and their popularity continues to be strong. Keep baseball the way it is and accept the fact that it's probably more of a regional sport now, and not mainstream. They got huge numbers for the Cubs World Series despite the games being long with a lot of pitching changes and so on. The sport is what it is. Getting rid of throwing 4 pitches is fine, and getting rid of the AS game determining home field in the WS was long overdue, but outside of that, STOP. The one thing they could do to fix the game is robo umps to make sure calls are accurate, but instead they want to focus on other things that are meaningless. That seems to be Manfred's MO.
  11. If he's not on the 25 man roster, then he'll have to clear waivers. So the only way he can start the season in AAA is if they option him and he clears. Basically, he has to start the season in the big leagues. If not, then they have to expose him to waivers.
  12. They can send him down whenever but he'll have to clear waivers. He has no options left.
  13. The current sixth starter is Bolsinger, and after him it's probably Harrell and Oberholtzer. That's not particularly good. I think stretching Biagini out in AAA is a logical idea, assuming the team feels he can be an average starter or better.
  14. If they can get a win out of Smith and Howell, that is significant, especially for the cost. This is how to build a pen regardless of payroll. The Jays were not going to sign Chapman, so this strategy was the next best alternative.
  15. I'd be shocked if they add $9m to the budget with Bruce. Highly doubt it.
  16. Yeah I think Stroman is signable. Sanchez not so much with Boras. Still, you have four years of control left on both. Is there any real urgency?
  17. Because hating the idea of trading two of your best prospects for a 38 year old knuckleballer coming off a season he had no chance of ever duplicating requires front office know-how.
  18. They are probably in the 82-85 win talent range. I see it playing out similarly to how depth charts has the standings. Boston, Houston, and Cleveland winning their respective divisions, and the Jays being right in the thick of the WC race with a few other teams. Other than the AAA outfield, the Jays don't seem to have any depth in the minors. That will make health very important to them, especially in the rotation. Obviously if they lose Donaldson for any extended period of time they are screwed regardless.
  19. Pearce and Upton are better than Smoak and Zeke but the latter may get the bulk of the AB's against RHP, at least early on. It will make some difference.
  20. Blanton would be a good fit. He might get more than $3mm though.
  21. They are equally bad against righties worst case, and Upton does everything else better. Start Upton and use Zeke as a 4th of. Best case, Upton goes back to his Padres form and the Jays get pretty damn good value for one year. No upside with Zeke at all.
  22. Man, if Carrera and Upton are the LF options, then I think we all know who Gibbons will play more. Ugh.
  23. How about Gregor Blanco? Coming off a down year but solid defensive LF, about average against rhp typically, and a 2.0-2.5 WAR player from 2012-15. Can't be worse than Carrera. Edit: nvm, signed with the D-Backs. Wow, a minor league deal. I wonder why the JAys weren't on that. Well maybe they were but he didn't want to sign. I seriously would take anyone over Zeke at this point.
  24. He signed with the Royals.
  25. Smoak at 1B and Carrera in LF against RHP is going to be brutal to watch when Pearce and Upton are better than both of them at practically everything. I still say put Pearce at 1B full time and sign the best value LF you can find that can platoon with Upton.
