    Valenzuela is first on the team in WAR (1.7), 1st in wRC+ (124), t-1st in xwOBA (.347), and tied for 2nd in HR's (7) despite having like 50-150 fewer PA's than everyone he's tied with. He played 2 out of 6 games since Kirk returned, and is sitting today, so 2 out of 7. I don't follow the Dodgers, but curious how they deploy the lineups when both Smith and Rushing are healthy. I can't imagine they'd be playing Rushing only twice a week in that scenario, that's Tyler Heinemen level playing time, but maybe that is the case. Feels like limiting Valenzuela's time when he's been the best player on the team is counter productive, but obviously if he can't play anywhere else (like 1B) then there's not much they can do. JS is taking a bullet before he benches Springer for any prolonged period of time so DH is limited as well.

    If the owners don't get a cap (they probably won't unless they want to miss an entire season), then this feels like their fallback. Curbing amateur/international spending and making it more likely that players enter free agency later in their careers will ultimately help the owners. College will effectively become the new developmental system for the league. Not sure if this will be good or bad or neither, but could definitely see the owners backing off from a cap and ending up getting something resembling this in return for it. Which is probably their plan. Offer the 1 thing the other side will absolutely say no to (cap/floor) and also offer them 3-4 other things that they don't like but will be more willing to bend on when you remove the cap from the conversation.

    Need to find a way to get BV more playing time. Put George in the OF more often to open up DH.

    The Jays have 4 relievers that are in the top 7 in appearances for all MLB relievers. Either JS needs to start scaling back his RP usage (some of that not his fault due to SP injuries) or he needs to let starters go deeper than he feels comfortable sometimes. This is one of those games where the latter made more sense, not because of how Yesavage looked, but how the pen has been used lately. If Varland needs to get 4 outs in June against a hapless Red Sox team, then it's a deeper issue. Ultimately it comes down to the offense doing their 2023 tribute. That season was legitimately one of the most painful "good" seasons the Jays have ever had mainly because scoring 3 runs in a game was their version of busting out. This season has resembled that one way too much offensively (unfortunately it hasn't matched 2023's lack of SP injuries).

    The Yankees winning a World Series a few months after the Knicks win a title, a year after the Jays choked one away, and a few months before baseball begins a lockout that might miss parts or all of next season would certainly question my sports fandom. I could see it happening though. The AL is trash, and the NL will beat up on each other.

    Yeah I don’t like the pen overuse, especially for Varland, but that’s just how JS likes to manage, and if the Jays can’t win by more than 5 runs when they do wins games (4 runs is a save situation to JS) then this is what the end result will be. The offense needs to wake up.

    The team leader in WAR and wRC+ will now be playing twice a week. That's probably not the ideal format here, but I guess Springer is going to be glued to DH, so there's not much that can be done.

    Yeah the Jays chances of winning tonight probably increased significantly with Scherzer being out.

    Arraez and Vlad on the same team competing to see who can hit more singles sounds like fun.

    If the Jays are in the exact same spot they are now a month from now (under .500, 1-2 games back of a WC spot), then they are 100% going to be buyers. Whether that would be the smart play is another story. As far as Vlad, I think doing a "Devers" style trade to off load him (preferably when his value is up a bit) would be the best long-term move they can make at some point over the next couple of years (before the decline starts to set in) but no chance it happens. Just have to figure out a way to build around him as you go year to year not knowing whether he's a 2-3 WAR player or a 6 WAR player.

    I miss 2025 when JS would make these boneheaded decisions and they would almost always work out. Like if this was 2025, that Clement bunt would have found a hole and 2 runs would have scored somehow. The magic is gone.

    The Brewers are such a well run organization. One of these years they will get the playoff crapshoot luck in their favor.

    I'm sure Heineman will find his way back to the Jays org before the end of the season (hopefully if it happens it is as a minor leaguer).

    I wasn't trying to rehash Game 7, just taking a shot at Hoffman because it will forever be justified to do so, but scapegoating the hitters for not being able to score more against a parade of aces (granted one on 0 days rest) when the closer gave up a game tying HR to a #9 hitter who had 7 home runs in three years against RHP seems a bit unfair. Game of inches bad luck vs serving up a meatball to a #9 hitter. Not exactly apples to apples. But whatever, don't want to beat this dead horse any more than it already has been. My potshots at Hoffman will surface every now and then, though.

    Jeff Hoffman is the reason Max went from "retiring with a World Series ring after a great Game 7 start" to being forced out of the game for hanging on too long. Sad. Curious to see how long it takes the Jays to pull the plug with him. It probably won't be immediate. Max may have to mutually agree that he's washed.

    Giving Garcia a 2 year guaranteed deal at age 34 coming off an injured 2024 post trade seemed really risky for no real reason at the time (can't imagine he was getting many/any offers beyond 1 year), but not surprised at all if his arm is toast at this point. Good reliever when healthy but the moment you saw his velo suddenly chasing 100 mph, that's when you knew the arm was probably a ticking time bomb. Relievers in general are risky bets.

    Horwitz has a 140 wRC+ after tonight and is apparently pimping home runs now.

    I guess SWR can't pitch again so soon, but burning good relievers on this game sucks.

    If Vlad wants to be Vladimir Arraez Jr, then batting him lead off is fine.

    He's not a starting caliber player even with the defense. Projected for a 2.5 WAR by the end of the season but they are expecting a 90+ wRC+ from him during that span, and I think that's a big reach at this point. The sample size for him being a bad hitter is far greater now, and he's not stealing bases like he did previously (maybe due to injuries) so he's not even adding that much value there. I know JS values vetrin presents more than skill sometimes, but at the very least he has to accept that Gimenez is a platoon bat and stick someone else at 2B/SS against LHP. He has a 52 wRC+ against LHP since 2024. Atkins absorbing over $100M in guaranteed money for Gimenez and Straw has to be investigated. No other GM on the planet, regardless of available payroll, would have done that, much less given up an asset (Horwitz) in the process. At least Straw had a good 2025, and Gimenez had some big hits in the playoffs last year.

    The Phillies have bounced back nicely from their rough start, but their lineup is ass. They need like 2-3 bats at the deadline.
