  1. To play devil's advocate (because I actually want the Jays to sign him), the Dodgers know him better than anyone else, and yet don't view him as a priority. Is there a reason for that? They have a rotation need, he's been there for years, and he'll likely end up less expensive than MadBum who they seem to have turned their attention to according to Rosenthal.
  2. Was the original post in this thread even from a reputable source? Haven’t heard it verified anywhere else.
  3. Ryu is probably going to require a four year deal, which I'd be fine with even though it would scare the crap out of me. The cost of free agency is usually adding one more year than everyone else, or a lot more AAV than everyone else, and some times the latter may not even be enough. If Ryu would take a four year deal and we can front load it so that his riskier years are cheaper, then I'd be ok with it. I don't expect him to sign here, too many teams willing to overpay for pitching and Shatkins is very risk averse, but something like 4/72 or 4/80 (while an overpay for his age/injury risk) is probably a risk the Jays can afford to take at this point. If you're going to take a chance, then the upside has to be high. Ryu at his best is an ace or damn close to one. You're probably not going to get that ceiling for $72-80m in a conventional off season. Ryu has enough warts to be a realistic target, even though I expect him to sign with the Angels or Dodgers at this point.
  4. It's not a good deal or a bad deal. Indifference is the best word. It's hard to come up with any emotion for a Tanner Roark signing.
  5. I don't see them moving Jansen. Maybe McGuire if they feel they are selling high on him, but as a tandem they should be really good value in 2020 and they make nothing. Moreno and Kirk are still a couple of years away so it's not like anyone is knocking down the door.
  6. Either that or they anticipate adding more to the roster and want to keep the spots open. I don't think 2020 will be an outright tank like 2019 was.
  7. If Sterling Sharp is still on board when the Jays pick, go with him.
  8. Roark is going to have a WAR somewhere between 1.0-2.5 and an ERA around 4.50. Dickey is probably an apt comparison (except for the KB part). The Dickster even in his awful starts could at least soak up innings and he'd have some good ones mixed in amongst the general median of completely average pitching. That's what I'd expect here. There is no upside with this move. Anderson probably has a bit of upside if you believe in his ability to suppress hard contact and be a FIP beater. Roark you just kind of have to accept for what he is.
  9. Porcello gets 1/10 from the Mets.
  10. The Angels top 3 prospects are Adell, Marsh, and Adams. All outfielders. They have Trout and Upton at the big league level. If they can't sign a SP they'll probably end up trading for one. Joel Sherman mentioned Kluber's name but don't know if that's actually something being discussed. They seem to be in a good position to trade from their system though. Wonder if they'd want Giles for the pen.
  11. Boras will break a billion after Ryu, Keuchel, and Castellanos sign. Damn. This much excitement in the off season and it's early December is a damn good sign. I know it's an unusually great free agent class this year so that might be the reason but Boras had his guys sign early this year and it has been so much better because of it. Hopefully this trend continues. But yeah, the Angels need to add at least one of Ryu or Keuchel now.
  12. Yeah unless you are getting a clear upgrade in the OF with many years of control left, might as well stick with Hernandez and hope that his post June/post ASB numbers suggest some time of breakout is possible. With the extra roster spot I fully expect all of Hernandez, Fisher, and Alford to be on the roster when the season begins. I doubt we will see a OF signing. The real position player upgrade will come at 1B, whichever direction they decide to go there (Yoshi, Shaw, whoever).
  13. It would be hard to name anything less interesting than Tanner Roark. He's not even a bad pitcher, just freakin boring as hell.
  14. Gord Ash was the worst GM in Toronto sports history, and I don't think there is a close second. Anyone defending him, much less saying he was better than Shatkins needs to get away for a while.
  15. If you told me before the off season began that we'd sign Roark to a two year deal, I probably would have said "that sounds about right". Hopefully can provide 150+ innings of league average production.
  16. After Hernandez came back from AAA (June onwards), he had a 1.8 WAR, 126 wRC+, 10 BB%, 34.4 K%, and 92.1 avg EV (mph) in 323 plate appearances. That was after he became starting CF. The Jays definitely need a long term answer in CF, but short term they might just roll with Teocar and hope his bat compensates for his D rather than spend money on stop gaps.
  17. Trollosi is just putting "#BlueJays" because he knows it will generate traffic given the quantity of the fanbase on social media. It means nothing. Just ignore him.

    NBA Thread

No one wants to work for James Dolan. I think Masai could leave, but if he does, it will probably be for something related to the Giants of Africa, and not another NBA gig. He's already accomplished what he sought out to do in Toronto. Wouldn't surprise me if he will look for another challenge soon.
  19. Interesting. Not Ryu, but MadBum.
  20. This is great for baseball. MLB needs the Yankees to be the Evil Empire. It’s not great for the Jays, at least short term, but 8 more years of Stanton and now 9 years of Cole. It will be interesting to see how they perform as they get older. The Yankees likely already regret the Stanton trade two years in. So I guess now Happ is going to get moved. More pressing for the Jays is what happens with Ryu. My guess is he goes to either the Dodgers or Angels but we will see.
  21. The Jays need to keep DH open for Vlad, who they will probably load manage throughout the season depending on what shape he is in. I wouldn't mind Edwin if the team was a middle of the order bat away from contention, but right now, nah. Tsutsugo would make sense if they think he has upside since he fits the team's timeline, but a 37 year old DH is the last thing the Jays need.
  22. If the Jays get a good secondary piece as incentive to take Happ, then that’s fine, but it would have to be something good. Yankees trying to get as far under the tax as possible to get Cole (the lux tax is important to them) and if the Jays are helping them out then we should get some incentive for it. Happ was worse than Thornton last season so I’m not sure he’s much of an upgrade. The secondary piece would be the key to the deal.
  23. Maybe the Jays have their sights set on next year's FA market? I mean it is not as strong as this year's, but Odorizzi will be there without a QO, as will other mid rotation types that likely won't cost $100m to sign. Plus it will be the last off season before the CBA expires, so the market might be different. The Jays are not at a point in their win curve where grossly overpaying for someone is going to make much of a difference, so they might be more in the feeler stage to see who might fall into their laps.
  24. I normally don't care about divisional trades, but if the Jays are helping the Yankees get Cole by taking Happ, then we better be getting a damn good prospect/player as incentive. Happ was not good at all last year, is 37, and has a vesting option for 2021 if he starts 27 games.
