  1. Hudson deal makes no sense at all but some times teams are willing to reward players after a title. This might be one of those cases. Good for him.
  2. If he gets $100-110m in free agency like expected, then he’ll clear about $180-190m for his career. Not bad for a late bloomer whose first year of arb was at age 29 and last year of arb was a lost season due to injury. His prime years were incredible. Jose cleared $100m for his career but did not bet on himself after 2010 (instead went for the extension) and ended up losing a ton of money. If he became a FA after 2011, he would have cashed out big time. By the time he did become a FA he had already begun his decline. Edwin is well over $100m now and could get another $24m if his option is picked up. JD made out the best out of the late bloomer group, but he was also the best player out of that group so makes sense.
  3. Jays will be all over this but so will everyone else. Time to trade some fringe 40 man roster types for international draft money.
  4. Eh, I'd be fine with it. Needs a lot of work, and like I said high chance of being a bust, but if you want to get an actual CF prospect, then have to aim in the lower minors. I doubt too many teams are trading them away when they are refined and in the upper minors, certainly not for a one year rental like Giles. Get them when they are lower in the minors and see if you can work on fixing their issues. If we can get Marsh instead, then obviously do that, but I'm trying to be realistic. I just want a young legit CF option for Giles. Find one with even modest upside who can play the position for a long time and I'll probably be good with the deal.
  5. Even Giles for Adams would work for me (further away and more likely to bust but Jays can wait on a potential legit CF).
  6. Apparently it is 6/50 guaranteed, and can max out at $88m over 8 years if both team options are picked up. Good deal for the White Sox, but good for Robert too, I think. He'll start the season on the team instead of held down to manipulate an extra year, so he really only gives up one free agent year. Would he be able to get more than $88M with 3 min years, 4 arb years, and then his first of free agency? Maybe, but not a guarantee, and that's assuming he actually becomes a star and remains one over the long haul. He'll be a free agent at age 29.
  7. Depending on whether they sign another OF, I'd expect to see Gurriel/Teoscar/Grichuk starting with Fisher as the 4th OF and Alford as the extra roster spot (defensive replacement, pinch runner, etc). If there is one constant with this front office it is that they don't usually dump someone with even modest potential until they have exhausted all avenues (see Pompey). Of course if they sign another OF, then that might change things, but even then that other OF could be the DH (or Hernandez can DH), and the same roster configuration as above works.
  8. Urena has been dropped from the 40 man roster to make room for Shaw.
  9. Puig's more of a short term stop gap type to me. Which is fine. I would think he is more realistic than Cast/Ozuna. If the Jays are going to spend big money I don't think they'll do it with anyone remaining in free agency, but we will see.
  10. I’m willing to act fake outraged on social media at Rosie’s fat shaming if it helps getting her removed. It would be for a good cause.
  11. I guess Castellanos, Gurriel, Grichuk, and Hernandez can rotate between OF/DH, and Cast can cover 1B against LHP when Shaw has to sit. Could work. Probably still not going to be a good defence, but the offensive improvement would be significant.
  12. One more question from Rosie and Ryu is going to wonder how quickly he can void his contract.
  13. So one of Ozuna or Castellanos? I think Ozuna fits what Atkins usually targets in hitters but the QO is an obstacle. Cast seems more realistic, especially if his market is not great due to his horrid defence.
  14. Yeah, the “next shoe to drop” will probably be next year. Be respectable in 2020 and then go for it in 2021. We might see some incremental improvement the rest of the off season but I wouldn’t expect anything major.
  15. Sign Betts next year instead. Outfield is a bigger organizational weakness than pitching at this point.
  16. I recall the deal being announced by Rosenthal and others and then talk of the league having to review it (with the possibility of them nixing it) before it became official, so that matches up with Samson's story as well. Other than the Yunel part, which might have still been true (Jays were going to dump him anyway so if the Marlins asked for him, AA probably just said no problem), I believe every word of that story. Josh Johnson's career lasted 16 more starts after the trade, of course he failed his f***ing physical. He was the perceived jewel of the trade and he wasn't even healthy. Incredible. Papa Buehrle was the only good part of that trade.
  17. The Jays were going to dump Yunel for anything so that part is likely false but everything else seems realistic.
  18. Holy s*** I'm so glad AA is gone. Thanks for JD and Vladdy, but stay as far away from this org as possible, Alex. He was willing to give up Thor, knew JJ wasn't healthy, and still did the trade? That's infuriating.

Yeah teams with depth and no superstars who play hard every night can rack up regular season wins but will struggle in the playoffs. Last year the Raptors had depth and a superstar, which is why they were so good. I think I'm fine with a competitive 1st round loss or 2nd round loss. Anything beyond that would be an unrealistic expectation for this team. They have heart and depth, but lack the upper end talent. It's going to get exposed in the playoffs unless they find a way to trade for a star between now and then.
  20. Yeah they haven't really gone balls to the wall this off season. Reality is the Jays probably needed at least 3 big league starters when the off season began even if they were continuing to rebuild (they literally had no one reliable to count on), and they signed 4 (or 3.5 depending on how Yamaguchi does). What they have done is basically continue the rebuild while increasing the floor of the big league team. Didn't lose a pick since Ryu couldn't get the QO again, and haven't subtracted from the farm at all. The only young player who has been hurt by this winter so far is Tellez, but it's not like he's earned a spot on the roster (and there's a good chance he sucks anyway). Shatkins is still going to bank on the development of Pearson in 2020, and maybe someone like Kay can come up and do something as well. They'll still give Teoscar and Fisher plenty of chances, and Drury isn't going anywhere. This is basically a development year with a shot at .500.
  21. Cancel/outrage culture would eat Shatkins alive on social media if they signed Russell. A team with no social media presence or fanbase (aka the Rays) could get away with signing him. No one would notice or care.
  22. Has power, draws walks, good speed, hits from the left side, and is a former top prospect. Not impossible to see him turn into something if they can help him stop hitting grounders and make more contact but he needs work.
  23. Drury is going to be platoon with Shaw in all likelihood. Shatkins likes him and they tendered him, so that's his likely role even though he's not a guy who mashes lefties. We do need someone who can play SS and cover for Bichette though.
