  1. I like this idea. Might be too gimmicky for some, but the traditional "Team X plays Team Y because of their record" can get boring. This idea would create an additional form of content (selection show), which would be great to promote the game assuming the teams have their star player be the one announcing the team's selected opponent on TV. Plus make the first round playoff matchups more personal rather than just a formality based off record.
  2. Maryland governor is a Republican, so at least there is a glimmer of hope of this being accepted, but at this rate I'm not expecting it.
  3. The moment they expand the playoffs once, they will never go back. Just like the universal DH. There's way too much TV money to be made, and once they get fans back to attend playoff games there will be more gate money as well. If 16 teams are making it in 2020, then it will change moving forward, IMO. This is where they need to have expansion though, because 16 out of 30 is more than half the league. That's a bit ridiculous. I say start with 14 teams in 2021, and then 16 teams once they add two teams in expansion, whenever that is.
  4. Damn. The best chance the Jays would have at a playoff spot in 4 years, and they'll be using someone's backyard as a home ballpark. Either way, hope it happens. Even if you're not a fan of expanded playoffs, the one year it would make sense is in a 60 game season. It would mean a good team that starts off poorly isn't as penalized for it, and an average team that flukes their way in will have to work that much harder in the playoffs to keep advancing. Of course if this happens it would be purely a financial move, but still, would help the game for this season.
  5. Agreed. I'm not expecting any state to approve them at this rate aside from Florida. Might have to play all the home games on the road, if even that is allowed.
  6. I believe Shapiro said Dunedin checks off all the boxes, it just happens to be in the Covid hotspot, which is why they are not considering it. If Florida were in better shape in terms of the virus, they'd probably be in Dunedin right now.
  7. The Phillies play the AL/NL East, so they'll have games against the Rays and Marlins, never mind the Pirates already playing in their stadium. That quote from Levine makes no sense. Jays might have to bite the bullet and play in Dunedin.
  8. Heyman is saying it's 12 years for "about $350M". His 2020 salary is $27m ($10 million prorated), so he's looking at 13/360 (or thereabouts) from 2020 onwards if Heyman's number is correct. Or 12.37/360 since 2020 is playing 37% of the normal schedule. Baseball agents don't seem to look at AAV, but rather total value of the contract, so Betts is getting about $29m AAV when he's worth a lot more than that, but gets the biggest non Trout contract in MLB history in terms of overall dollars.
  9. Yeah, Betts may not have signed an extension in a normal season, but with an unpredictable economy in both MLB and the country, he became more open to it. Smart on his part, especially if he still gets $350m plus.
  10. Yeah considering what the Dodgers gave up, what they got back, and now this rumored extension, they made out amazingly well here. Mookie is arguably the 2nd best player in the game at age 27. The Dodgers are going to be a beast franchise for a long time. They pay their stars, and develop talent as well/better than anyone. The Red Sox looking like a cheap second rate mess out of all of this is just icing on the cake.
  11. There was probably no chance in hell Mookie was signing here, but I kinda liked dreaming about it. Oh well. Hope he gets a great contract.
  12. No one is taking Grichuk's contract. Players in the 1-2 WAR range are not a hot commodity in MLB right now, certainly not for the $30+ million he has left on his deal after this season, and definitely not during a pandemic when teams are going to be making far less money. Best hope is to keep him and hope he lives up to whatever upside they thought he had when they signed him in the first place.
  13. I'm glad they didn't do a travel day for the Nats series. Would have been pointless to play in Washington for 2 games, then travel just to play the Nats again in another city. More games at Yankee Stadium sucks, though.
  14. Of the 5 minutes of the game that I watched, I didn't have a problem with no fans either. I think it will be more noticeable in basketball, but in baseball, regular season crowds are typically mild anyway, so pump in some fake background noise and you barely notice a difference.
  15. Apparently the Jays installed/upgraded new turf in 2015, something I have absolutely no recollection of at all, so the turf is likely better than it used to be. I still think natural grass is the way to go, but it definitely won't happen at RC, so it's a moot point. If they keep upgrading the turf every so often so it's better for the players, then I'll take it.
  16. Shaw can't hit lefties, so he'll need to platoon with someone. Drury can't hit anybody, so he doesn't make sense as a platoon mate, but I'm guessing that's the role he would have played. Maybe they will use Espinal in that role in the mean time.
  17. You think the turf/hard as a rock surface being worse for your body than natural grass is a fallacy? I think players would disagree with you. There’s a reason nearly all baseball stadiums are grass.
  18. Skydome at the beginning was definitely a big deal, but it just looks really outdated now, and when you look pictures of the stadium during off season, it hurts my knees just looking at what the players have to play on all year. I doubt Toronto is ever going to build a new stadium, and they'll never/can't add grass, so looks like we are stuck with this, but at least we (might) get PNC this season.
  19. To be fair, Alford was a top 50 prospect at one point. He just hasn't delivered the last two seasons, and time has essentially run out. Either way he got more rope than McKinney or Fisher because of his prospect status, and the fact that through 2017 he actually did look like a really good prospect. No one expected anything out of McKinney or Fisher the moment they were acquired. The expectations (and hope) were a lot higher for Alford.
  20. I'm actually excited to see the Jays play home games at PNC if it happens. Always wanted to see the Jays have an outdoor stadium with grass (became a Jays fan in 91 so I've only known Skydome/RC). The Pirates would be doing the Jays a huge favor here. Cherington/Sanders for using their park for a season? Deal.
