  1. Yeah, Betts may not have signed an extension in a normal season, but with an unpredictable economy in both MLB and the country, he became more open to it. Smart on his part, especially if he still gets $350m plus.
  2. Yeah considering what the Dodgers gave up, what they got back, and now this rumored extension, they made out amazingly well here. Mookie is arguably the 2nd best player in the game at age 27. The Dodgers are going to be a beast franchise for a long time. They pay their stars, and develop talent as well/better than anyone. The Red Sox looking like a cheap second rate mess out of all of this is just icing on the cake.
  3. There was probably no chance in hell Mookie was signing here, but I kinda liked dreaming about it. Oh well. Hope he gets a great contract.
  4. No one is taking Grichuk's contract. Players in the 1-2 WAR range are not a hot commodity in MLB right now, certainly not for the $30+ million he has left on his deal after this season, and definitely not during a pandemic when teams are going to be making far less money. Best hope is to keep him and hope he lives up to whatever upside they thought he had when they signed him in the first place.
  5. I'm glad they didn't do a travel day for the Nats series. Would have been pointless to play in Washington for 2 games, then travel just to play the Nats again in another city. More games at Yankee Stadium sucks, though.
  6. Of the 5 minutes of the game that I watched, I didn't have a problem with no fans either. I think it will be more noticeable in basketball, but in baseball, regular season crowds are typically mild anyway, so pump in some fake background noise and you barely notice a difference.
  7. Apparently the Jays installed/upgraded new turf in 2015, something I have absolutely no recollection of at all, so the turf is likely better than it used to be. I still think natural grass is the way to go, but it definitely won't happen at RC, so it's a moot point. If they keep upgrading the turf every so often so it's better for the players, then I'll take it.
  8. Shaw can't hit lefties, so he'll need to platoon with someone. Drury can't hit anybody, so he doesn't make sense as a platoon mate, but I'm guessing that's the role he would have played. Maybe they will use Espinal in that role in the mean time.
  9. You think the turf/hard as a rock surface being worse for your body than natural grass is a fallacy? I think players would disagree with you. There’s a reason nearly all baseball stadiums are grass.
  10. Skydome at the beginning was definitely a big deal, but it just looks really outdated now, and when you look pictures of the stadium during off season, it hurts my knees just looking at what the players have to play on all year. I doubt Toronto is ever going to build a new stadium, and they'll never/can't add grass, so looks like we are stuck with this, but at least we (might) get PNC this season.
  11. To be fair, Alford was a top 50 prospect at one point. He just hasn't delivered the last two seasons, and time has essentially run out. Either way he got more rope than McKinney or Fisher because of his prospect status, and the fact that through 2017 he actually did look like a really good prospect. No one expected anything out of McKinney or Fisher the moment they were acquired. The expectations (and hope) were a lot higher for Alford.
  12. I'm actually excited to see the Jays play home games at PNC if it happens. Always wanted to see the Jays have an outdoor stadium with grass (became a Jays fan in 91 so I've only known Skydome/RC). The Pirates would be doing the Jays a huge favor here. Cherington/Sanders for using their park for a season? Deal.
  13. I agree, PNC is beautiful and Pittsburgh is a great area. Once the Jays players play at PNC regularly, they are going to hate the concrete Dome.
  14. I think Nashville is definitely getting a franchise. It's just a matter of when and how (expansion or relocation). I don't understand the urge to go back to Montreal. It failed the first time, and the moment the Expos franchise is revived and puts up a few bad seasons in a row it will die again. There's no point going back there. They'd be better off building a new stadium for the Rays in a better location. The one Canadian market that I think could work in MLB is Vancouver, which is basically like Toronto's fanbase (will support a winner but disappear when things are bad). But like I said, after this whole Canada debacle with the Jays, I think MLB will feel it's not worth the hassle anymore.
  15. My hot take out of all of this is there will never be another MLB franchise in Canada. The Rays if they relocate will go to Nashville, or if there’s expansion it will be Nashville and a 2nd US city. Montreal is done.
  16. The number of games doesn’t matter. If anything, the fewer amount of games will make each game mean more to the networks. If the Jays are playing the Yankees, the YES Network is not going to want a 1 pm start on a Tuesday when it was originally scheduled for 7 pm. And night games in Buffalo that ruin the TV experience would make it pointless. They’d either have to fix the lights or use another big league park. I say just use Washington for the home opener since they are there anyway, but after that if Pittsburgh is available that would be a no brainer.
  17. The TV networks want night games because weekday day games are going to be less watched and less appealing to advertisers.
  18. I don’t think what fits the Jays strengths really matters at this point. Get the players in a big league stadium with big league amenities. PNC would be fine. It’s a beautiful park and built for MLB. If there’s limited conflict with the Pirates, then even better. One underrated aspect of this might be that the players won’t have to play on concrete.
  19. If things in October are as bad as they anticipate, then they might bubble the playoffs since it is fewer teams. I doubt the Jays are going back to Toronto in 2020 even if they somehow make the playoffs.
  20. I'd rather they just use Dunedin rather than share with the Rays. Shapiro claimed Dunedin has everything they need, except it's in a Covid hot spot. The Trop is a mess of a stadium. Just play in Dunedin if Florida is the direction they go in. Man, if the Jays win the 2020 World Series, then Canada better get no claim to that title.
  21. Grichuk has a 89 wRC+ for his career from March/April to June, and a 118 wRC+ from July to September/October. I don't know if he's just better in warm weather, or whether he needs to be really bad for 200-300 PA's before he gets going, but either way, I'll predict he does better than average during the 60 game season. My other sleeper is Hatch. I think he turned the corner after the trade, and stuff is there.
