    The finish to the season isn't meant to ignore the first 14 games, those games happened so they count, but it's meant to show that looking at 2020 as a continuation of his pre-2019 performance can be misleading. It was literally a terrible 14 game stretch followed by 46 games at a level closer to his 2019. Maybe he would have been streaky all season if the season were 162 games and finished around where he did, we don't know, but I think there's cause for optimism for his 2021 performance.

    Yeah this front office just added Springer, Semien, and Yates. That's shopping in the elite aisle. I don't think there's much left for an expensive SP (Bauer), but I would assume one of Paxton/Odorizzi and/or a trade is what they are looking at.

    I liked Didi as a fit, but between him and Semien on a one year deal, I'd definitely choose Semien. There is an article on FG that says in his first 14 games of 2020 he had a 24 wRC+ and -0.2 WAR, but then in his next 46 (regular and post season) he had a 133 wRC+ and 2.0 WAR. So basically in 86% of his total 2020 plate appearances, he was the 2019 version of Semien. This signing has very real upside. I hope he has a great year and cashes out next winter.

    Yeah I would have been fine giving him double that on a one year deal, but as mentioned he probably looked at it as NY or Japan, and he's certainly made enough money in his career to choose location over money.

    Bonds, Clemens, and Schilling should all be in. If you want to put an asterisks on all of their plaques so the world knows that they cheated and/or are scumbags in real life, then so be it, but they didn't commit heinous crimes or anything. It shouldn't be this complicated.

    Yeah he wants the big money deal that his 2019 season would have warranted, so it makes more sense to take the high AAV for one year, and try again next season when teams should have more money to spend and he might be coming off a better season.

    Springer (w/ signing bonus), Ray, Yates, Chatwood, and Semien comes out to $66.5m added in 2021, not counting incentives. They'll likely want to save some payroll for mid season moves as well. I'm not expecting much more. Maybe one SP (Paxton fits the Semien/Yates/Ray mold of buy low one year deals) and then some smaller depth moves.

    Fisher is out of options, while it looks like Davis still has 1 option left. So my guess is Fisher is gone eventually.

    Alpha Atkins has played free agency beautifully so far. One year deals on high upside players coming off down years (Semien, Yates, Ray) and one major impact deal (Springer). The farm system has remained in tact so far, and slowly but surely the 40 man roster is starting to lose clutter. The team still needs at least one, but hopefully two SP's, and still arms out there to choose from.

    Baerga mentioned 2B in his IG post, and Rosenthal just mentioned it as well. Looks like Semien at 2B and Biggio as the regular 3B (but I'm sure he'll be playing everywhere). On a one year deal, this is a really nice move. He may not come close to 2019 again, but since it's only a year, there's very little risk involved. He should still be good for a 2-3 WAR I would think, but with potential for lot better.

    If Tanaka is out and Bauer is not likely, then it’s down to Odorizzi and/or Paxton. My guess is the Jays would go with Odorizzi if given the choice (less of an injury risk + they were in on him last winter) but both have downsides.

    From MLBTR: I don't know if the players disagree with any of those things as much as they want more in return for them.

    Agreed. Not a fan of long extra inning games. It shouldn’t be a rule in the playoffs but in the regular season I have no issues with it.

    Knowing how MLB works, they'll agree to expanded playoffs and a universal DH on March 27. It's ridiculous that they are using the DH as a bargaining chip. At least expanded playoffs would involve some type of revenue split, so that makes sense as a bargaining tool (as annoying as that is for fans) but the DH seems like a really arbitrary thing to postpone.

    Dodgers apparently have a 2 year offer out there, but Turner wants more years. Jays would have to go 3-4 years, and at age 36 that seems like a bad idea. Didi on a two year deal might be the the better play.

    If MLB actually wants to start the season on time (debatable), then moving the teams in the Cactus League to another makeshift ST site is probably doable (Texas, Florida, etc). Not ideal, but doable. It's imperative that they actually play exhibition games though since you can't expect pitchers to be ready for a 162 game season without a proper ST. The owners would clearly prefer a delayed season, but players want 162, and I don't think Manfred can do anything about it this season.

    There is literally only one knock on Tanaka, and it's the partial UCL tear. He checks every other box for the Jays. Dependable, can pitch in the AL East, can be in a playoff rotation, etc. The issue with the non Bauer FA market is that it's riddled with risk, whether it's injury, performance, or both. If Tanaka can be had on a 1-2 year deal, then I don't see any other non Bauer options that look any better/less risky.

    That's what I meant, he'd never give a player (alone) the ability to opt out. I'm sure Shapiro would be open to a mutual option, since both parties can opt out of a deal, but those are pointless as they are basically designed to not be picked up.

    Shapiro has said he'd never give a player an opt out, so I doubt that would be an option with Bauer or anyone.
