    Returning to Rogers Centre for two months shouldn't impact what the team does at the trade deadline, but you are right. The team is not going to sell right before returning home for the first time in almost two years. They waited until the trade deadline of 2018 to rebuild rather than the trade deadline of 2017 because they (meaning Rogers) didn't want to sell when attendance was hot. I don't think selling would hurt attendance in this case since it's limited capacity, but fan interest would probably decline for the 2nd half. That's what they'll base it on. If the team has a bad week against the Mets and Red Sox, then the most Shatkins will do is stand pat, IMO. Maybe there's a trade for a controllable pitcher out there somewhere using some young players they'll have to make 40 man roster decisions on in the winter (K Smith, Taylor), but those are pretty much the two options.

    It depends on what the returns would be. I wouldn’t be against trading Semien and Ray if the team falls further back, it’s just I’m not sure if it would really accomplish anything since teams nowadays tend to hold on to good prospects. The comp picks at least increase the draft pool and/or give you a shot at keeping the player if they accept (Semien definitely won’t, and Ray might have pitched well enough to decline as well, but still two months to go). But you’re right about asset management, it comes down to what other teams would be offering. Situations like this is where I envy a team like the Rays. They don’t give a s*** about optics and just do what they feel makes the most sense.

    I think there can come a point where buying at the deadline will be a little pointless (ex. they fall 7+ games back of Oakland for the 2nd WC by next week), but I'm not sure selling will accomplish much either, unless they find a way to trade Semien and Ray for players that will help them as early as 2022. Trading for low level prospects really doesn't fit the team's current situation (they need to win in 2022). Holding on to both of those guys and qualifying them is still an option.

    Thank goodness Kirk is starting. I was dreading Kirk being used as Reese's backup or platoon buddy since Montoyo values service time more than talent, but common sense (at least for now) seems to have prevailed.

    Spiders sounds better IMO. Maybe Guardians ending in "dians" played a part in their decision, or maybe they just tried to find a word that wouldn't trigger anyone in the future.

    Realistically, the Jays best shot at the playoffs is the 2nd WC. They are not catching the Red Sox or the Rays. So really, NYY and CLE losing is probably the better alternative for the Jays.

    The Adames and Cronenworth trades prove the Rays are human when it comes to trading (they don't win all of them, thankfully), but it wouldn't surprise me at all if Calvin Faucher ends up having a better run than the two pitchers they gave up. The Rays are scary with trades most of the time. I saw Buster Olney on SC mention Rizzo a possibility for the Red Sox, and that makes a lot of sense.

    Great move for the Rays. I wanted the Jays to get Cruz, but Grichuk and his .270 OBP will forever be playing everyday on this team, so I just have to get used to it.

    Very good offense, strong bullpen, good enough SP with Sale on the way. Not to mention an actual smart front office now (no more Dombrowski) so they'll probably make good trades at the deadline. I don't think they are falling off this season.

    Yeah I know nothing about any of those guys, but "son of Andruw Jones" is enough for me. He was destined to be a Blue Jay.

    After tonight the Jays will be 5-13 against Tampa, Boston, and the Yankees at "home" and 10-8 against them on the road. Getting out of Buffalo/Dunedin will be long overdue.

    The Red Sox could win 100 games and posters here will still say they suck. I get it, I hate Boston too, but they might just be a really good team. Cora is a cheater, but for him to cheat the moment he's back in the league after a one year suspension would take some balls.

    This front office hasn't traded prospects often. The best one they've moved is probably Kendall Williams (unless I'm forgetting someone) who is still very young and far away. I don't think there's any chance they move a top prospect at this stage. My guess is they'll trade for a rental like Jon Gray or someone like that, which should cost something, but not a top prospect.

    I don't like the Red Sox but some of you are acting as if they are just scraping by. They have 3 players with 140-150 wRC+ and the secondary parts of their lineup are almost all above average offensively. Cora might be cheating again, I have no idea, but that's still a very good lineup. Stripling doesn't have great stuff so when he's having an off day he's going to get crushed. It just happens quite a bit against the Red Sox.

    Montoyo getting to use every reliever in the pen tonight is like heaven for him.

    If you go back to the Stroman trade thread which most of us (me included) did not like at the time, it was Kay that was the issue most had, if I recall. That trade always hinged on SWR.

    Anthony Kay f***ing sucks. This game will go on forever if he's expected to eat up innings against a good offense.

    Charlie going 14 innings without a pitching change would have caused his own head to explode. He had to take Matz out.

    Yeah, listening to Buck and Pat is like listening to a broadcast from 1974. Shulman is great, just need someone who is more in tune with the current game to go along side him. Buck and Pat ain't it.

    Yeah, my guess is whatever Shapiro proposed to them was already approved by the MLBPA, so if the country agrees to what was proposed, then it should be fine.

    Yeah the 3 days with the draft, derby, and AS Game were great for baseball. The draft felt like a big deal being on primetime on a Sunday, and the derby and AS game did a great job spotlighting the young talent in the game today. I saw universal praise on social media for baseball, for the most part, and that's exactly what they need. I actually enjoyed this AS break, and that's usually never the case.
