  1. This game will depend on which offense shows up. There's no in between with this team. They either score a lot or can't score at all. Have to hope this is one of their good days.
  2. I'm in my mid 30's, and that's exactly what I do. I'll watch a movie with my wife, but have my phone on me to periodically check the score on the app, and if something happens, I use MLBtv to watch it (since it allows people to rewind live games) or I'll just wait for the highlight to pop up. As mentioned, one benefit to baseball in today's environment is that it is much easier to consume without having to watch the game. Put Gameday on your phone, and you know exactly what is going on. If you tried to follow the NBA like that, it would be a lot more difficult. Or put baseball on in the background, and do your daily routine. I'm not much into gambling, but the dead time in between pitches, AB's, etc, can probably be better utilized for sports betting. There are benefits to the current format. The issue is the lack of real action in games nowadays (3 true outcomes), time in between pitches, and the overall length of the game. I think what Manfred/Epstein have implemented in the minors as far as rule changes are all positive steps to fix those issues. If those are implemented in the bigs within the next few years, it will drive purists nuts, but I think overall it would likely help the flow of the game.
  3. I dislike Manfred as much as anyone, but I agree, he's in a tough spot. The game has a core fanbase that trends older. That fanbase is not going to accept change very easily. However, if baseball doesn't change at least to some degree, it's going to alienate the younger demo that they desperately need to attract. So Manfred pretty much has to annoy the diehards in order to build something that the casuals/younger audience will get behind. Younger people today have no attention span. Long extra inning games are not going to attract any new fans, they'll just entertain the existing ones who want the game to be played the same way its been played for decades. If you notice the stadiums in those 15-20 inning marathons, they are 90% empty by the time the game ends. People want to get home. People at home don't want to dedicate 5-6 hours on a sporting event that has a slow and methodical pace. The league should figure out the best solution to end games quicker. If there is a compromise where they start the runner on 2nd in the 11th, so that they give each team one extra half inning of "real" baseball until the ghost runner comes in, then fine.
  4. Yeah, if the Jays got a single in the extra inning like the Red Sox did, or Bo hit a fly ball, then the game is tied again, and the Jays would have scored in the same BS way the Red Sox did. The Jays just happened to fail in the extra inning. Either way, it's not the reason the Jays lost. If you score one run in a game, then you're either going to have to throw a shutout or lose, and the Jays luckily were able to split the two games.
  5. Unfortunately the Yankees and A’s keep winning. Jays need to win tomorrow. A split would be terrible.
  6. People whining about extra innings, you realize the Jays got a runner on 2nd too, right? They scored 2 runs in 15 innings. Winning one is impressive based on that. The rule is annoying but every team has to deal with it.
  7. Winning with a walk off against the Red Sox after the s*** they've done to the Jays this year is very satisfying. Get both today.
  8. Sucks about Mayza. He has been really good this season. Not thrilled at all to see Murphy and Snead up but I guess there's not much other option.
  9. It's either Hand for another inning or Saucedo. Don't use Cimber, Richards, Mayza, or Romano.
  10. Dolis has been good in his last 7 outings. Still don't trust him, but he hasn't been dumpster fire like he was earlier. Borucki has been really bad, though.
  11. Borucki and then Dolis. Then I'm guessing Hand who hasn't been used in a few days. Ugh.
  12. 4 innings of the pen likely without Cimber and Richards. Even with a 7 run lead can't get too comfortable here.
  13. Man what a fun inning. So good to be back at RC.
  14. I'm wondering if this is even Buntoyo's decision. As much flack as he deservedly gets, he has no reason to trust Valera over Espinal at 3B. At least Joe Panik was an all star 6 year ago so Charlie being the idiot that he is would have a bias there, but to value Valera over Espinal makes no sense. Valera has lasted much longer with the org than anyone could have expected. I wonder if this is the org more than the manager. Otherwise the only other reason is that he thinks Espinal can't hit righties to the point where any LH bat is better. That seems a little extreme, but then again it is Charlie.
  15. Buntoyo valued Panik more than Tellez (played Panik at DH some times) and now Breyvic more than Espinal. I wouldn't take his lineups to mean anything about talent. He's playing the wrong guy, but whatever. Valera is a switch hitter so hitting from the left side against a righty magically makes him the better option.
  16. Agreed on the Rays, for the reasons mentioned already. s***** + often empty stadium, non-existent fanbase despite great success, cheap ass owners, and contributed greatly in hurting the aesthetic value of the sport (though they are not alone in that). If they moved the franchise to Nashville and actually had fans attend games every now and then while also spending a bit on payroll, then maybe my opinion would change.
  17. Gallo with a 3 run HR to give the Yankees the lead. Yes, the HR was barely over the RF fence.
  18. The Yankees are looking much better with Rizzo and Gallo in the lineup. I wouldn't rule them out. Going to be an interesting 2 months.
  19. The sad thing is that isn't even a joke. That's reality.
  20. This is the spot for Hand where he has a cushion to allow some runs and still close the game out, but knowing Buntoyo he's salivating to use Romano.
  21. Espinal > Valera. If you want to say it's no big deal, then fine, but Valera is almost 30 with no MLB track record at all. There's very little upside in playing him, while Espinal likely has some. Maybe some Urshela flashbacks where they want to give Valera a shot.
  22. At least Jose and Edwin were both a year away from free agency when they extended, and both were coming off career years (Jose in 2010 and Edwin in 2012) so both the team and the players shared some risk in those contracts. The Acuna and Albies deals were so far away from free agency and there's practically no risk for the Braves.
  23. That's the biggest problem. If he's used like a traditional backup/4th outfielder, then he's fine, but if he's used as a starting OF, then that's a 600 PA/1 WAR/.270 OBP level player. Montoyo is going to use him like a starter as long as he's on the team. They might need to Panik him this winter just to take the toy away from the manager. Palacios can be a 4th OF, is already on the 40 man, and is not a vetrin, so the manager won't use him like a starter. That's an easy position to fill even if they don't want to use Palacios in that role. Hopefully this off season is the end of the Grichuk run, but I don't think it will be.
