Cole, Rodon, Cortes, Severino, and Montas is a damn good rotation. If the Yankees add a LF, then they are going to be tough.

If they want to avoid the CBT penalties, then yes it would make sense that KK is the starting CF and they try to find a cheaper (pre arb) OF via trade instead of going after Brantley or Conforto. Not sure that's realistic especially if Jansen is the one going the other way. Hard to see the D-Backs trading Thomas or McCarthy for Jansen, and the only other team that is looking for a catcher and might be interested in Jansen that has pre arb LHH OF's are the Tigers, but not sure Baddoo or Carpenter move the needle for the front office (maybe I'm wrong). Apparently Conforto wants a multi year deal with an opt out (sounds like what Rodon got last year). I don't think Atkins does that. Brantley is going to need to DH a lot, and if Kirk is on the team (never mind Springer and Vlad needing DH days), he becomes less of a fit. If the Jays still have a little bit of wiggle room maybe Peralta is a possibility, but he'll still get a pretty sizable guarantee I would think.

One thing to keep in mind with Vlad/Bo is that by the time they become free agents, the league will be a year away from the next round of CBA negotiations. The economic landscape in 2025 is going to be dramatically different. Now, the one constant with MLB free agency is that even when owners aren't spending, it never hurts the upper tier guys so Vlad/Bo should still get huge contracts, but giving it to them now doesn't help the Jays all that much as they likely won't be getting any sort of team friendly perks from it. I've always thought Bo was gone after 2025, and that if the Jays prioritized signing anyone it would be Vlad. I still feel that way. Either both leave or Vlad stays. I don't see it ending any other way.

That's what the Dodgers appear to be doing this year, and what the Yankees did prior to 2022. Go over the threshold for a couple of years, then cut costs in one off season to get under so that the penalties reset, and then go over again. I agree that if the Jays are going over it this year then they should really go over it. Get Brantley/Conforto, get another high leverage RP, etc. Cutting costs in 2024 or 2025 is doable, but they'd need to add some pre-arb level talent at key positions to avoid having to overpay to fix holes. Not sure where that's going to come from other than Moreno. Hopefully we see Barger become a 3B option for 2024, and a catcher gets traded for a young OF/CF. Luckily 4/5 starters in the rotation are locked up for the next 3 years so at least there's some cost certainty there. -
Stripling signs with the Giants for 2/25, with a player opt out. That's a very reasonable deal in this market.

Yeah if the plan is to trade Jansen then options are limited now. Astros, Cubs, and maybe the Tigers. A D-Backs trade is going to involve Kirk or Moreno, and not sure the Jays want to do that, so hanging on to all 3 catchers might be a possibility now.

The Guardians have signed Zunino for 1/6. Cross them off the catcher list.

Would have been nice if the A's had a good young left handed hitting CF with a few years of control left. Could have gotten him for Otto Lopez, Hayden Juenger, and Mitch White rather than signing Kiermaier.

Based on earlier rumors, the Astros, Guardians, and Cubs are probably the most likely suitors. D-Backs probably won't make a deal for Jansen, and not sure if the Padres are a match trade-wise even though they have a clear need.

Vazquez is the last obstacle in the way of the Jays catcher trade, so hopefully he signs tonight and gets it over with. Edit: Vazquez going to the Twins.

So they covered CF and SP. They could use another SP to push Kikuchi to the pen, but a bat is probably a bigger need now (Conforto, Brantley, trade, etc).

Bassitt rejected the QO so the Jays will lose a pick and some international money, but getting a quality SP on a 3 year deal in this market is a nice piece of business.

This would make more sense as opposed to the Braves getting Murphy and holding on to 3 catchers.

Murphy will take one look into AA's eyes and sign his prime away for nothing. Let's see if this trade finally opens up a path to a Jays/catcher trade.

Yeah, one of Conforto/Brantley replacing Hernandez and KK essentially replacing Tapia would be a net positive and add much needed balance to the lineup. Only downside would be having to look for either 2-3 outfielders next winter (depending on the length of KK's deal) but I guess cross that bridge when you get there. -
I'd be surprised if it were a straight one year deal given that the Dodgers were apparently interested as well. Maybe the Jays promised more playing time, or he saw a path to more playing time in Toronto. Ideally for the Jays it would be one year + a team option with a buyout, because as fringey as Kiermaier is, the Jays kind of need outfielders beyond 2023 as well. Either way, as credible as "Damon" is, I'll wait for more of an official announcement.

We usually do see terms of a deal reported even during “pending physical” stage. Surprised we haven’t even heard about the years on the deal yet.

Yeah I actually thought the Jays would get Kepler before the KK signing. I guess they still can get him if they think his bat has potential to improve, but after KK I think the team needs a LH bat that can hit closer to the top of the order. Conforto and Brantley are probably the best fits in that regard, although if Brantley needs to DH most of the time then he may not be the best roster fit unless Kirk is traded.

I’d be shocked if the Jays didn’t add another outfielder, either in free agency or trade. Conforto makes a lot of sense in free agency. Not sure about the trade market. Jansen for Happ would be fine as a 2023 swap but the Cubs would have to add something for the one fewer year of control.

I'm not the biggest fan of adding Kiermaier, but the Jays really needed an OF that is controllable after 2023. Conforto is signing a one year deal, Bellinger already did, Brantley probably won't get more than one year due to age/injury, and Gallo was horseshit last season so no one is signing him to more than one year. I don't see the team trading Kirk or Moreno, and no team is trading a highly controllable LH CF for Jansen. The options were very limited. I was actually warming up to the idea of signing Nimmo but that's when I thought it would take a 6 year deal. Trying to beat an 8 year deal would have been insane. So KK on a 2+1 deal is more reasonable, not in a general sense, but for the Jays specifically. They only had Springer who was controlled after 2023, and their 2 best OF prospects in the minors are in A ball (with arguably the best one of the two just exposed in the Rule 5). This is more of an indictment of how bad the Jays OF situation is than anything else.

Yeah this move improves the team defensively but adding another bat that can hit towards the top/middle of the order is necessary. Either Conforto or Brantley next would be ideal. Then trade Jansen for the best SP you can get.

The Dodgers were after Kiermaier as well, so I think it's probably going to end up a 2 year deal.
