  1. The Dodgers didn't qualify Kershaw as a favor for his service to the franchise. They wanted him to go into free agency without the anchor of a compensation pick weighing down his market. They're still considered one of the two favorites to sign him (with Texas as the other major player). The Blue Jays have no shot at him.
  2. Personally, I have a feeling that the Jays are planning on signing multiple top free agents, which is why they don't care about draft pick compensation as much and have made offers to Rodriguez and Syndergaard already. If you're only gonna sign one big guy, it's kind of sus giving up a draft pick to take a flyer on someone like Syndergaard but if you're signing one or two other big FA's, Syndergaard only costs you a 3rd or 4th round pick, which is a lot easier to part with. They could also be considering that they'll be getting multiple comp picks from Ray/Semien so they can sacrifice some mid-draft picks without blinking an eye. And I get that the Blue Jays are "in on" everybody every offseason but it's one thing to check in on everyone and it's another to make offers. We've heard that the Jays have already put offers in on E-Rod and Thor. Which tells me they are playing to win in this market and not just kicking tires.
  3. The Jays are in on Verlander too but he's looking for a multi-year deal. Gonna take something like $40M/2. Here's what I've seen so far: Word is that the teams that were in on Syndergaard also have interest in Verlander. That includes three AL East clubs — the Yankees, Blue Jays and Red Sox. Toronto and Boston made aggressive offers for Syndergaard. It is not publicly known if the Yanks did. From Joel Sherman's column. | Link And then this from Peter Gammons:
  4. Sounds like the Jays may have made an offer between $21-25M for Syndergaard.
  5. The Blue Jays were in on Syndergaard prior to his deal with the Angels. That's the second starter we've heard the Jays were in on that had a qualifying offer attached.
  6. Opt-out clause after the 5th year and limited no-trade protection.
  7. There were people that wanted to give Steven Matz a QO this year. That 18.7M AAV means the Blue Jays basically just got Berrios to accept six QO's in a row.
  8. Back-to-back offseasons: - The Blue Jays sign Hyun-Jin Ryu for $80M over four years. - The Blue Jays sign George Springer for $150M over six years. - The Blue Jays extend Jose Berrios for $131M over seven years. Those are the #1, #2 and #5 largest contracts in franchise history (Wells and Martin fall between Berrios and Ryu). This front office is not afraid of spending.
  9. The deal is $131M/7. $11M for his last arb season and then $120M for 6 years of free agency, going through his age-34 season. Excellent contract.
  10. I don't think you need Moreno for Ramirez. I think you can get it done with Kirk and Martinez as the focal point. Jose is on an incredible deal but time is starting to tick on getting max value for him. The deadline next year leaves 1.5 years and then after that, he's just a one-year rental. The Indians I think will realize that and be a bit more open to moving him this winter.
  11. Like, Jose Ramirez is obviously my #1 target this offseason but if that's not realistic, Ketel Marte is one of the only guys in the league with an even better contract than him. If they can swing that, this offseason is already gravy. In a perfect world, Marte switches to third and second base is the spot where the competition is, but I'm also very okay with Marte just playing 2B and having 3B open for Moreno when he wants it.
  12. I'm entirely cool with that. Biggio, Espinal, Moreno, Groshans, Taylor, Lopez and Smith is a very strong pipeline of players that are pretty much MLB-ready. Having at least one position open on the team to let those guys battle it out in spring training seems like the ideal scenario for me. At least one of those guys is eventually going to emerge as a really good player.
  13. I think he comes in at like $54m over three years. Maybe if his market gets hot then he can pull 60/3 or 72/4. And considering he just posted a near 6-WAR season and has no QO attached, I'd have no qualms with getting in on Marte at 72/4. Hell, after all the talk about bringing in the Seager brothers, it would be hilarious if the Jays got both of the Martes instead. Makes more sense from a roster standpoint and it's not even that unrealistic to imagine the Marte boys accumulating more 2022 WAR than the Seagers.
  14. It depresses me that the Jays haven't been tied to Starling Marte at all even though his market has been developing lately. Guy's going to be the best signing of the offseason.
  15. Gabriel Moreno at the MLB Fall Stars game: PA #1: Hits a grounder on a hop and beats it out for an infield single with surprising speed, impressing all three of the commentators. Two pitches later, he runs first to home on a laser from Triston Casas, again impressing the booth with his speed. The Casas hit is ruled a ground-rule double so Moreno is called back to third. Scores on the next pitch on a Curtis Mead grounder. PA #2: Smashed a screaming line drive to center field that required one of the best catches of the game from the aptly-named James Outman. This was the hardest-hit ball of the game at 107.9 MPH. Other thoughts: Love the new shift rules, like the larger bases, pitch clock gave the game a really nice pace and the automatic strike zone was f***ing beautiful.
  16. Freeman apparently turned down 5 years x 27M AAV from the Braves. Guess there's no hometown discount there.
  17. Those same agents will be begging those same teams to sign their guys come February.
  18. Moreno DH'd today. 3-for-6 with a double and 3 RBIs.
