It's embarrassing how these f***ing garbage commentators can only talk about Bleday and Velasquez and haven't said a word about Moreno all game except for when he was at the plate.
Not gonna lie, I'm not ecstatic about Samad Taylor being exposed. I wanted him as the utility guy on the MLB roster next year.
I'm assuming the Jays believe he won't get picked up because other teams might not want to roster an AA player on their 26 all season long but I still think he gets poached.
I didn't say after 2022. I said if he was on the open market right now. Big difference.
The only reason more pitchers aren't on that list is because most don't make it to free agency when they're that young. Berrios is 27 right now.
Stroman is 30. Berrios is 27. Even if we ignore that Berrios has better projections for 2022, the age alone would give him another three years and at least $75M over whatever Stroman's ceiling for earnings is.
Jose would be the #1 option in this class by far and there is no way he wouldn't make over 200M if he was available on the open market right now.
I have no idea why he took this. If he was a free agent right now, he'd be getting offers over $200M. Instead he essentially signed for $83M/5. Almost feel bad for the guy but I kinda also wish his agent represented all the Blue Jays' players.
That contract structure is literally perfect. Gives the Jays a ton of room to work with over the next few years and then the biggest base jump is to 24M, which is still nothing for a front-end starter. Verlander's making more than that in 2022.
Actually makes a ton of sense to back-load a contract. A lot easier to build future rosters around payroll you already know about rather than squeeze large numbers into much tighter payrolls in the near future.
A back-loaded deal gives them time to get contracts like Ryu and Grichuk off the books while still being able to fill the roster in with depth players they need right now.
While I was being purposely ridiculous, that roster would only come in at $162M.
And if it's true that the Jays can get up to $180M this year, you'd still have some money to fill in the rotation and pen.
Maybe the Jays should just move Bo Bichette to 2B, sign Carlos Correa for SS and trade for Jose Ramirez at 3B.
Oh and then get Starling Marte for CF, move Springer to RF and move Teoscar to DH.
That would be swell.
