  1. Bastardo and Manoah are currently on the 40-man and are recovering from TJS, so I think that's an easy pair of 60-day IL immediately to begin the season which opens up two spots. Not sure if you can/want to 60-day IL Macko who hasn't debuted, but if it's possible then that's another spot that opens.
  2. Myles Straw might just be hitting his way onto the roster. Not exactly looping balls into the outfield, he's been driving the ball often.
  3. I think Jimenez makes the team, otherwise there's no backup 3B/SS behind Bichette and Ernie Clement. Wagner probably makes it as a 1B/2B/DH type who platoons againt RHP, and Schneider is likely the LHP LF/DH platoon. You add a backup C and that leaves one bench spot open for a utility infielder. If Orelvis or Barger rakes then one of them could take it, assuming they can play 3B, which makes Ernie the de facto only backup SS. At the end of the day all these guys have options so it's not a super big concern to keep them all and shuffle them as required depending on injuries or underperformance to the fringy guys.
  4. Kirk looks incredible this spring. If he could carry this batted ball performance into the regular season a 5 win season will be easy to make.
  5. He saw a brown guy and the letter J in a name he's never seen before and knew he wasn't making that mistake again.
  6. He's also a mediocre at best defender which I think is as big a reason as any as to why he hasn't stuck at the MLB level. You can do something with a guy with his characteristics as long as he plays decent defense at either SS/CF or a couple of positions lower on the defensive spectrum.
  7. ICYMI: Nimmala hits a bomb on a 96 mph fastball. Explosive swing, you can see how quickly he turned on it. Off of a 5 year MLB vet with good stuff. https://www.mlb.com/bluejays/video/00u7xoku6J7XfIbb9356/reels/nimmala-s-bomb?partnerId=web_video-playback-page_video-share Side note: his name is 100% being pronounced incorrectly by the Pirates broadcaster.
  8. Bloss with a somewhat rough outing in terms of command, missing often with the fastball. The shape of the pitches looks decent, fastball averaging above 94 with 18 iVB, a tight looking breaking ball with 2600 RPM. The command was poor though and I think the swings and misses lagged as a result. I think there's hope here as a #4-5 starter with #3 upside if either the fastball ticks up or the command improves. Obviously also remains to be seen how he can handle a typical starter's workload over a full season. Good depth to have to start the year nonetheless.
  9. Josh Walker looking pretty good. Generic career minor leaguer who converted to relief pretty late, lots of Ks and BBs in the minors. The stuff is good from the left side, fastball averaging about 94 with a nasty looking sweeper/slurve pitch, 5 whiffs on the latter on 8 pitches. https://www.fangraphs.com/players/josh-walker/23617/stats?position=P
  10. Gausman struggling with control, but the fastball velo looked good, 95.6 mph average in that first inning with 3 whiffs on 12 pitches. Splitter was particularly missing often but the shape looked decent. All pitches faster than last season's average by at least 1.5 mph, the "slider" (cutter?) averaged 86.3. Kirk just hit a bomb to dead CF.
  11. To be fair the 2.5 WAR was carried by a .382 BABIP. With that said, Iglesias can play all over the infield well, has good career splits against LHP, and has been a 1+ WAR player for 10 straight seasons who is lauded as a great clubhouse presence. Basically an ideal utility player who can spot start for a few weeks at a time without killing you.
  12. Varsho just isn't a good enough hitter to justify dragging on the roster just as a DH and occasional PR. He has a career wRC+ of 98 against RHP, so it's not like you could maximize him in a platoon, and if he's not fully healthy you don't want to run the risk of him getting a setback from running the bases or something silly. Also there just isn't many hitters you would expect him to be better than. All of Bo, Vlad, Springer, Santander, Kirk, Gimenez are better hitters, Wagner projects much better, Loperfido projects fine in a pinch and if Straw is (on the roster and) starting he could be the late-game PH replacement if necessary. Let Varsho get fully healthy, it already looks like he's making great progress and should hopefully be out for not much time in April.
  13. Hey @Brock Beauchamp, just dropping this here as I'm not sure if there's any other thread for dropping bugs and performance downgrade or whatnot. The board's been marginally slower to load over the past 12-24 hours for me. It's not a huge deal and everything does eventually load, but it's been noticeable by at least a couple of seconds longer compared to before. This has been true across mobile and desktop. Just wanted to let you know in case this is an issue that other users are facing and you may be unaware of.
  14. I think aside from Roden having a higher power grade, which is a big deal, there's more uncertainty with Wagner's position. A bad 2B who already is getting odd looks at 1B and DH is not a great sign. Perhaps this is their way of telling us they think Wagner doesn't really have a position and Roden could handle the OF for a couple of years at least.
  15. Unless the reason for him going 3 for 30 is injury, then it actually wouldn't really matter in the slightest if he performed poorly in ST. There's almost no correlation between ST stats and regular season performance. I think fangraphs has done several dives into which ST stats actually matter, and the only ones with any sort of mild predictive power that carry over are K, BB and SB rates. Everything else is pure randomness and given the irregularity of ABs and competition being faced it can almost be ignored entirely.
  16. I'm less of an old timer than some on this board, so Dana Eveland is the first player among the crop of articles on this series - all of which I've read - which I actually remember both by name and by watching as a Blue Jay. Kind of impressive he managed to stick around for 10 years, more or less (his actual service time accrued was nearly 5 seasons' worth), he really only had one decent season for those 08 Oakland A's and the rest was a collection of rather poor stops around the league.
  17. I think it's kind of fun in how ridiculous and over the top it is. Like it's so ingrained in him to do this celebration that it messes up his confidence if he doesn't do it. As long as he's not injuring himself by jumping 3 feet in the air and landing each time I say you do you. He better not be barking back at anyone that pimps a homer off him or mocks him after getting the best of him though, now that would be lame as hell.
  18. The big boy bats are all getting their swings in this game. Varsho with the hardest hit ball of the game thus far at 109.4 mph, and that wasn't even on his HR which Statcast didn't pick up. Encouraging sign that his raw power seems to not have been affected by the shoulder injury.
  19. Varsho saw his backups in CF are Myles Straw, Steward Berroa, Jonatan Clase and Joey Loperfido and activated his super regeneration to make it back in time for Opening Day.
  20. Minor league deal, wild.
  21. The problem with this is there's only so much Votto can teach him if Orelvis doesn't have the hit tool or eye to bring those changes into effect. Orelvis probably has more raw power than Votto, but the latter had an all-time eye and hit tool that's hard to just teach. Orelvis is a more pure slugger so he needs someone that speaks his language on the hitting front.
  22. Nothing grinds my gears more in ST than teams in 2025 not having a f***ing camera setup and broadcast booth for televising games.
  23. The LOOGYs and other depth relievers trying to make a case for a roster spot are completely gas canning. Jacob Barnes, Dick Lovelady, Fluharty all struggling immensely with control.
  24. Prospects of (some) note on the field right now: 1B: Rainer Nunez 3B: Charles McAdoo SS: John Kasevich CF: RJ Schreck All recently into the game so will likely close it out. Roden who started at LF has now been replaced. Edit: Missed Victor Arias at LF. 21 year old with big numbers mostly at A ball with a taste of A+ last season. https://www.fangraphs.com/players/victor-arias/sa3015636/stats?position=OF
  25. John Kasevich just ripped a 107 mph bullet up the middle, robbed by Stott. Good to see that nice quality of contact identified in his prospect writeup.
