  1. I think from an optics perspective it makes sense to hang on to him at least until midway into next season, otherwise it's bad look for other Japanese IFAs the team might want to sign in the future. If it looks like they're the kind of org who will cut a guy in circumstances like the past season where Yamaguchi barely even pitched in then it doesn't make us a desirable destination for other guys like him.
  2. Are you okay? The Raptors get laughed at and hung up on if that's the best offer they make.
  3. For an ace with 3 years left on his contract, a potential 3-5 win upgrade at 3B and a formerly elite reliever who's probably an environment change away from being good again? How else do you think we'd be in play for a package like that, even with Bryant and Kimbrel's values being down?
  4. December vs April though.
  5. I disagree but I don't have sources to back up my claim so I'm not going to argue on this. I feel like if this is the second time for Cano he was probably always using and has just happened to be caught twice, less so that he was dumb and took PEDs twice and they popped him both times.
  6. I'd be willing to bet a significant percentage of the league is on some kind of PEDs. Most are probably just getting away with it.
  7. Yeah of course lol, I was just pointing that out. Rare occurrence for a team where they're able to come out ahead on a mega deal contract.
  8. The contract worked wonderfully for the Mariners. He gave them 20.7 WAR for 5/120 (roughly $6M per win) and then netted them a top 10 prospect +. Enviable position for any team to be able to get elite production for the first half of an ugly contract before it becomes an albatross and then not have to pay a single dime of that back end, let alone get a top prospect for the privilege of not doing so.
  9. That K/BB in 2020 looks pretty mediocre. I looked at his NPB stats and they're nowhere near the good Japanese pitchers (Darvish, Tanaka, Maeda) and significantly worse still than some pretty bad Japanese MLB pitchers (Yamaguchi, Yusei Kikuchi). The best case scenario I can see from stats alone is Hisashi Iwakuma and the latter was still a good deal better in the NPB. I obviously also have no idea what I'm talking and could not know less about NPB run environments in recent years.
  10. deGrom hasn't had long hair for quite a while now.
  11. Marlins franchise GMs: Don Mattingly 2017-present Michael Hill 2008-2013, 2016 Dan Jennings 2013-2015 Larry Beinfest 2002-2007 Dave Dombrowski 1993-2001 I think she'll be fine with the not being a latino thing. Also "they must believe she is clearly the best person for the job" should really go without saying.
  12. Keep in mind it wasn't just the Pujols signing that set the Angels back financially. Even if like BTS accurately points out there were some big red flags with Pujols entering free agency, he was still a first ballot HoF and one of the more recognizable names in the sport so some team was gonna pay him. They also took on the Vernon Wells contract in the midst of a dead cat bounce, and they gave huge contracts to Josh Hamilton and CJ Wilson, all of which either were albatrosses immediately or became so very quickly. Neither of those three players finished out their contracts playing for an MLB team. The Angels consistently have shot themselves in the foot past the Pujols signing.
  13. *Looks over in Miguel Cabrera's direction*
  14. Defensively? The only offensive number that's trended up is his K rate, he was 9th percentile in EV and 15th percentile in hard hit rate this season, I suppose that's some improvement over the 4th and 6th percentile marks the year before? Yay for trending up I guess.
  15. You may have contracted Abom's disease. Nothing to worry about, but you'll always overvalue players immediately after they've had a significant injury.
  16. You literally just provided a reason why African Americans might be underrepresented in baseball lol. Travel baseball is extremely expensive, especially for kids from a lower socioeconomic background - of which African Americans are disproportionately a part of.
  17. This is an absurd argument because the MLB is filled with Afro Caribbeans that genetically are very similar if not practically identical to African Americans. It is almost entirely a socio economic thing along with the popularity of each sport, if African Americans are drifting more towards basketball and football the reason has far more to do with accessibility, representation (/promotion of the sport) and economic means than "the requisitory athletic predispositions in baseball".
  18. IMO Bichette to 3B and Biggio stays at 2nd/in a Zobrist esque utility capacity. Bichette's arm is clearly better than Biggio's from the eye test.
  19. They have a ton of money and one of the top executives in the league. You go all in on Bauer, Springer + other free agents and suddenly you're competitive for the one of the last wildcard positions. They also have a lot of money coming off the books following the 2021 season in Brandon Crawford, Posey (has 2022 club option), Brandon Belt and Johnny Cueto (2022 club option). Why wait for the 2021 free agency class if you can pick up some of the elite talent in this one could be the thinking here. They have some players with sneaky upside in Yas, Alex Dickerson and Mauricio Dubon and their top positional player prospect Joey Bart is close to being MLB ready.
  20. He asked which of those do we figure would be available in trade. I'm not upset at all lol and it's weird you would think I am, you seem upset that I'm calling you out on what I find to be a dumb suggestion.
  21. Because they could? In theory their OF was Yelich, Cain and Avisail Garcia coming off a decent year with the Rays. They obviously didn't think much of Grisham or believed he would be this good and liked Urias more to improve their infield. The A's seemingly love Laureano and they have no one to replace him with. As a competitive team they'd likely prefer back MLB or near-MLB ready pieces, with their weakest positions being 2B, SS and SP. How exactly are we going to address that need? Are we giving them back an outfielder who can't/shouldn't be playing CF for their CF?
  22. Ortiz did drop some weight late into his career and he continued to rake. Fielder's weight arguably contributed to a premature end to his career.
  23. His batted ball profile would seem to indicate the added weight definitely hasn't helped, if not hindered his hitting mechanics (this is probably simplistic I won't disagree). Still though like I've said before I don't care that much that Vlad is getting into better shape so he can become a below average defender at third or first and a slightly better baserunner, but god damnit the man needs to fix his launch angle so that he can finally break out into the guy he was always supposed to be offensively. If losing the gut allows him to do that then go right ahead, I certainly won't get upset at an athlete for improving their physique.
  24. Elite hand eye coordination and hitting mechanics? I don't think you're giving Altuve enough credit on the strength side of things, he needs to generate a lot of force with his frame to be able to send one 400+ feet. Vlad can send a ball 400 feet fresh out of bed, while obviously he shouldn't just be losing a ton of weight without doing strength exercises so that he's not losing a lot of muscle, it's not like suddenly him being 50 pounds lighter will stop him from crushing the baseball - ideally not into the ground.
