  1. I see your point but I'm not sure this is entirely the case. His whole A's career Semien has been a roughly league average hitter with his plate discipline numbers slowly but continually trending in the right direction and flashes of real pop, basically culminating in his 2019 breakout. He also raked in the minors for what it's worth. Simmons on the other hand has been a slap hitter from day one, making tons of contact but never with much authority until his 17-18 seasons where he finally tapped into some in-game power. I think even if you regress Semien's 2019 season to his mean he's still comfortably around 10% better than Simmons at the plate.
  2. In a sense Simmons gives us less flexibility, as he's almost certainly signing to play SS only. He offers a lot lower upside than Semien but potentially a higher floor since his defense has consistently been top-of-the-scale elite his entire career. He also kind of quit on the Angels last season which isn't the greatest look for a young up-and-coming team so one could argue Semien is a higher character guy and we could speak all day about how much that actually means but the org clearly chases those types. Given that it forces us to move Bichette off SS for potentially only a season, I prefer acquiring Semien who can step in at SS in a pinch but won't demand to do so and will play wherever he's asked.
  3. Mark Shapiro is a pro at saying exactly the right thing without giving anything away. One could easily interpret him saying the heavy lifting is done as meaning no more 9 figure contracts are being handed out. So probably no Bauer, cool. Keep in mind at the time of this press conference the Semien signing isn't even official and I'd classify that as "heavy lifting". I'm positive the team is exploring several avenues to address the rotation still, it may not come in the form of a free agent but there's bound to be a trade in the works if they can't land an Odorizzi/Paxton.
  4. You just knew someone from the Toronto Sun was going to ask about the cheating scandal, always some ******* that has to make things uncomfortable for everyone.
  5. What do you want him to say? "Yeah we saw Grichuk was ass out there and needed to get a real player to replace that bum." Of course he's going to acknowledge his effort out there, it's not like Grichuk asked to play at his less valuable position. He's still a player under contract that we will rely on during the year.
  6. Miller probably signs for like 2-4M, would be an excellent bench piece to have.
  7. No reason it has to take us out of Hendricks if we are actually interested in him. And if it takes us out on Bryant, who cares? If the Cubs thought he was worthless due to his arb bonus they would have non-tendered him. I'd rather pay the money in FA for a rental than also having to send assets to do so.
  8. Even if we get his 2018 and 2020 versions that's still a 3 WAR player lol.
  9. I don't care what position he plays. 3B is a black hole and this is a terrific way to address it and offers a pretty decent floor with a high ceiling.
  10. You expect me to believe that from the contracts I listed, all signed within the last 10 years, inflation accounts for Realmuto getting $5M+ than the median catcher AAV?
  11. I realize the rest of his career barely counts but harsh to the three other orgs he's been a part of lol.
  12. It's quite possible to argue that Bauer is already worse than Stroman and you're kidding yourself if you don't think this is the case.
  13. Realmuto will be 30 on opening day. The age he is at the time he signs his contract is entirely irrelevant since he will be playing his first season of that contract as a 30 year old. Sure, he's good, but is he better than any of the guys that I listed above? Pretty much everyone who signed the contracts I listed were coming off better or comparable seasons prior to signing their respective contracts. I wouldn't consider a 5 year contract for a catcher to be a short term deal since most of them that reach FA sign for 4-5 years anyway and their aging curve is clearly not the same as other position players.
  14. I'm looking at market value for comparable catchers in recent history and either every FA catcher has been underpaid or it's Realmuto that's getting a lot more than market value. Even the extension catchers got far less AAV. Brian McCann - 30 years old, 5/85 Yasmani Grandal - 31 years old, 4/72 Russell Martin - 32 years old, 5/82 Buster Posey - 26 years old, 9/167 Joe Mauer - 28 years old, 8/184 Yadier Molina - 30 years old (July birthday), 5/75 Realmuto - 30 years old, 5/115.5 Something doesn't add up here.
  15. For what it's worth, Grandal projects to be just as good as Realmuto - better hitter, better defender, worse baserunning - and he'll be making $18.25M per year in his ages 32-34 seasons while for Realmuto he'll be making $23.8M in his respective seasons. I don't think Realmuto is $5M+ more valuable per year than Grandal is.
  16. He's a catcher with good but unexceptional hitting, good but unexceptional defense, and elite baserunning (for a catcher). Similarly talented catchers Brian McCann, Yasmani Grandal and Russell Martin signed for far less money, all of whom were superlative defenders with similar offense. Realmuto here is getting Joe Mauer and Buster Posey money, two guys with HOF level talent who signed much younger and were faces of the franchise.
  17. LOL this tops the Joe Mauer deal by AAV. Joe Mauer signed his deal in early 2010 so he would've been coming off 6.4 and 8.4 WAR seasons and the deal would commence in his age 28 season. Buster Posey deal: signed in early 2013, coming off A 10 WAR SEASON, beginning in his AGE 26 SEASON. Dombrowski got taken to the cleaners by Realmuto's agent.
  18. Yikes, that is a lot of money. I like Realmuto but I'd respectfully pass on those terms if that's what it took for us to land him, let alone having to outbid it. I wonder if there was other serious competition for his service or the Phillies just caved in to his agent's demands. Classic Dombrowski contract.
  19. I think the more important Angels staff member that Bauer would have a problem with is their pitching coach, Mickey Callaway. https://www.si.com/mlb/2019/02/19/trevor-bauer-cleveland-indians-training-tools-twitter-controversy-cy-young But regardless he's almost definitely just going to follow the money.
  20. Why do people do this? Literally no front office cares that Tanner Roark was better than Bauer from 2014-2017, not to mention the obvious 4 age gap. Lol @ pitcher W-L and WHIP in this day and age. If you look at stats that actually matter they couldn't be more different.
  21. The catchers' union might have a complaint about it, idk.
  22. Both of those events would still have happened since the extra innings rule isn't active in the playoffs. It's the 16+ inning regular season games that basically ruin teams' pitching staffs for weeks to come that are an issue, and it's not like the vast majority of fans are watching past the 12th inning or so. Those can be memorable for the few that watch them but they definitely aren't falling under the "best games in MLB history" since most teams give up around the 13th inning and start throwing out junk pitchers to eat up innings that they'll be demoting the next day and you might never see again (remember Chad Jenkins?).
  23. Hot take: I found the extra innings rule to be entertaining, despite the gimmick. It made extra innings really exciting. However, it should go into effect at least into the 12th inning or above.
  24. I think you're the one that's confused about what people are talking about. The DH isn't nearly a strong enough concession for the players to accept the expanded playoffs which benefits the owners massively. The DH is much better for the MLB product itself, watching pitchers flailing away is bad.
