  1. How is my mind made up? I'm watching the games and I really don't see how you can say Goins after all of 9 games has better fundamentals than Kawasaki. Seriously what games have you guys been watching? What has Goins done to pass Kawasaki on the depth chart or be guaranteed a spot on next year's roster? There is a difference between having an opinion and needing evidence to support the contrary to change it and "my mind being set".
  2. A 2 WAR catcher and 2B would be an easy 6 win improvement this season. Easiest place to upgrade and I imagine the first holes AA works to fill. At least I hope so.
  3. His arm is a below average tool, fine at 2B less so at SS. Fundamentally Goins isn't close to Kawasaki. I'm really not sure what games you've been watching or perhaps you just have a very short term memory. It would explain the Goins fetish...
  4. Beede, more upside/riskier and a similar floor. Better velocity and body than Stroman who still has the better out pitch.
  5. It's great Goin's been given AB's since the games don't matter. I think he's playing his way up the depth chart. No way he should be relied upon in what is supposed to be a window of contention. If AA and co decide to take a step back next year and push the window back, then sure give Goins a full season of MLB at bats and see what you've got. I don't think anyone wants to see that though....
  6. I really don't get why you think Goins is some defensive whiz. His D definitely looked like it played at the MLB level but he hasn't been Johnny Mac or even Aaron Hill out there. Kawasaki will never be a great hitter, neither will Goins. Let's assume the bats are somewhat even. I have confidence in Kawasaki's ability to put up good at bats, do the little things right and he's hilarious to watch. I have no faith that Goins will be able to be a MLB player once the opposition makes adjustments. He's great AAA depth and perhaps he will prove himself with playing time but he doesn't have the raw talent or résumé to be given a starting spot.
  7. Gose or Pillar should replace Rajai (great fit but not really necessary anymore). I imagine the fifth spot in the rotation will be an open comp between Happ, Drabek, Hutch, McGowan, Stroman, Romero, Nolin and Redmond. The rest should be in AA/AAA as injury depth. The Jays should look to add at least one front end guy to the staff (Morrow, Buehrle, Dickey) for next season. AA will have to go outside the organization of he wants to improve the C and 2b spots. Which are must improves for me but I could be convinced Kawasaki would be fine at 2b if enough changes are made elsewhere on the roster.
  8. Kawasaki has a better chance at being the starting 2B in 2014 IMO. At least he is much more likely to be an above replacement level player in 2014. Goins has been too old for the level the whole way up the prospect ladder. The only thing he really has going for him is a decent performance in a cup of tea in the MLB level and decent K and walk rates. I would still need to see a lot more and over a much larger sample to be comfortable with Goins as the 2B next season.
  9. If he hits like Beltre he'll be a 5 WAR guy. Lawrie isn't the type of guy I would put a cap on but, that has to be a fairly upper percentile outcome.
  10. The main point is you still have to hit to play LF and the bat is still more important than the glove. I understand the point you are trying to illustrate and acknowledge that it's about run differential and recently there has been a shift to more athletic players all around the diamond, including LF'ers. However, LF has always and will always be a slugging position simply because you can hide their defence there more than any other position outside of 1B and DH. At the end of the day it's about scoring more runs than you allow and you play the talent that maximizes that differential -- regardless of stereotypes or preconceived notions. It's good to see this wave of young, athletic, and strong all-around talent that has been reaching the majors for the last few years. I can't remember the last time I was this excited about the young talent in the league.
  11. They aren't all bat guys but all of those players hit fairly well. Obviously defense is important but you aren't going to save 20 runs in LF even if you are a GG quality defender.
  12. If you have them handy would you mind posting the regressed numbers?
  13. Choo is a Boras client, he's not coming to Toronto. He would be a good fit though. I agree that they don't need a star at C, just an actual starting quality player. I think McCann is open to leaving Atlanta. He'll probably be in pinstripes of he leaves though.
  14. Brian McCann will be signed to a 6 year deal. A Carlos Ruiz/Josh Thole platoon should be Plan B. JJ will walk. Lind's option will be declined. Rajai will walk and be replaced by one of Pillar or Gose. The other will be used as injury depth in AAA. AA will continue to sell prospects and trade for Aramis Ramirez, Kyle Lohse and Yovanni Gallardo. Marlins trade 2.0. Payroll will be in the $140M-$150M range.
  15. I think that is best case scenario though. No guarantee that you'd be able to land all that talent in any given year. I'd also be hard pressed to believe that a team would give up too much value for cap space that the other team cannot use. I'm sure they'll get something of value but nothing close to the full value of the ~$3M in cap space. If more teams start going over the cap then there will be a huge risk that you go over the cap and only land half those guys. The Rangers and Cubs were fortunate to be on the cutting edge of this trend. They were able to exploit a market that always seems slow to adapt. I think we'll see more teams go this route next year and land less talent as a result.
  16. Going to have to go outside the organization to fill the hole at 2B IMO. Even if Goins has the skills to eventually become a decent starting 2B it probably isn't next year and it doesn't mean he should be given a starting spot. Besides there is nothing wrong with making Goins earn playing time. You cannot win a WS without solid up-the-middle talent and although solid defensively there are much better players and options available to the Jays. Goins doesn't fit in as a starter if AA wants to contend.
  17. He has a chance to be better than Boni or Izturis this year but, both those guys have been below replacement level. Their ineptitude does not make Goins a better prospect. Perhaps he is a bench guy or injury depth next year (I'd prefer to use Kawasaki on the bench).
  18. Ya, they need to find a way to strengthen the arm and build innings without putting inane amounts of abuse on the elbow/shoulder. The Jamie Evans' weighted ball program definitely seems like a good start.
  19. Do you honestly believe Goins has a shot at being an above replacement level MLB player? At best he's the super utility Boni was supposed to be without the OF versatility.
  20. Hahaha, what a fantastic play call, just perfect.
  21. Hopefully they hire more than just one person as they will not have enough expertise alone. It could take a whole consulting firm worth of knowledge and talent to actually move the needle.
  22. Crazy range to the left, slides knowing he is going to have to pop up quick, and then the money throw. That play was better than textbook.
  23. A couple million dollars to fund the position, new employees, researching the issues and then implementing solutions would go a long way IMO. A complete overhaul in the way this org thinks about strength and conditioning is necessary. I'm also of the belief that in regards to injury prevention baseball, and specifically the Blue Jays, do a lot of things backwards. Build arm strength, stop babying pitchers and get these guys on better off-season routines.
  24. Eh, I think it's a great strategy if you feel there is a player that is a star. However with the bust rate of even big bonus 16yo IFA targets I think a steady wave of talent is more beneficial than big hauls. Additionally, I imagine the Jays will be able to land more talent next year with two of the biggest IFA spenders, in the Cubs and Rangers, sitting out.
  25. JPA will hit 8 bombs in Sept, Goins and Pillar will hit over .300, Bautista/Rasmus will come back strong from their injuries, RA Dickey whave his best month of the season, Buehrle will continue to be solid, the back-end of the rotation will find a way to fill just enough quality innings, the BP will continue to be great and the Jays will go 16-10.
