  1. It's like the Padres got taken over by a radio call-in show. Anyone with name recognition, no matter the cost, come on down.
  2. Well you should still have to go there to have off-topic discussions. It seems silly not to check both but if that's how people operate, I suppose the Off-Topic forum could be merged and the threads identified through labelling (I'm not in favour of this btw). In any case, it doesn't make sent to have the off-topic threads here when an off-topic forum exists.
  3. I don't think it's the technology at all. Gaming is a pretty passive way of dealing with technology. I mean some gamers may want to gain a better understanding of what happens behind the scenes but I doubt most of them have that kind of intelectual curiosity. I would think the main benefit of gaming is that it's simply good for your brain. It develops your ability to process information and problem solve. It's been shown that learning a new game is very stimulating for your brain (and conversely that playing one with which you are intimately familiar barely provokes any brain activity at all).
  4. It's happened a couple of times with the Yankees. Greg Vaughn failed a physical when traded to the Yankees and a deal was nixed. I also remember an Expos closer (Urbina?) failing his physical and his deal to the Yankees being voided.
  5. Deals are conditional to physicals. This has become the absolute norm in baseball since Gord Ash forgot to make that a condition in the Mike Sirotka deal and MLB found that the Jays not the ChiSox were at fault because the Jays didn't do their due dilligence. Seems to me that the Padres are just doing what we all wished Gord Ash would have done at the time. They found something they didn't know about. Nobody knew about the arthritis in the hips. This wasn't disclosed, it wasn't even known. This isn't some previously know thing that they are blowing out of proportion to gain leverage. This is new data that has come out following the physical and it's very meaningful data. Are they supposed to just go ahead and say well "it's business as usual". How would you feel about that if you were a Padres fan? It's all about risk/reward. The reward is pretty much the same for the Padres but the risk has just gone up. That plainly and undoubtedly impacts the value of the player. It just does. Say you thought Kemp had a 70% chance of being the player from the second half last year. Well maybe that chance is down to 55% or 45% or whatever. That decrease in probability is absolutely worth something. It's just not the same trade anymore. It simply isn't.
  6. Well in that case, I suppose the Padres could assign him to one of their short-season clubs as a way of protecting the assett.
  7. Turner was in the Midwest League this season. Does anyone know when their season starts? This might be a non-issue.
  8. No worries. I suppose I also could have just deleted the post. I really, really hope the Jays land Toritani, not because he's an upgrade at 2B (he's not necessarily better than Travis) but because the team badly needs some kind of depth behind Reyes at SS and Travis doesn't provide that.
  9. Can this whole thread be moved to the off topic forum by a mod? It's clearly not a baseball discussion.
  10. Kang is Korean. Was your first sentence about Toritani?
  11. I really like the deal for the Rays or at least I should say I like the optics of it. I like that they didn't get too caught up in their previous valuation of Myers. If they feel that going forward he's not really better than Souza than it's good that they didn't fall for the sunk cost fallacy. Hannigan and Rivera are pretty similar players but shaving three years on a 34 year old catcher is pretty significant and could make up for the year of control lost on Myers. It doesn't hurt that Rivera is cheaper. The trade makes sense for the Rays even before you factor in the prospects. I don't understand the urgency to move Souza on the part of the Nats. They had decent pitching deph too so though the trade may look o.k. on paper, it's pretty bad for a win-now team. The Padres just seem like they are re-arranging the deck chairs. They seem eager to change but ultimately directionless under this current management group, not unlike the Colorado Rockies that way.
  12. Toritani was signed by the Padres. Heck, even much maligned option Alberto Callaspo has signed with the Braves. The options are dwindling. It's a damn good thing AA made the Devon Travis trade when he did. Not a lot of alternatives left out there. Edit: O.K. I guess it's not official with the Padres yet. I thought offering him a starting SS gig had sealed the deal for them but I guess there's still hope. Let's hope it happens.
  13. Wouldn't supporting Castro's regime be a little odd for a right-winger? I think beneath his vitriol, Dick_Pole might actually be making a good point. When Cuba changes, progess may be made in some areas but a lot will be lost as well. The changes coming won't necessarily be to the benefit of the people either. Cuba is probably about to become a lot less Cuba-like and a lot more China-like and that's not necessarily progress.
  14. The Dodgers are still on the hook for 9.5 M minus whatever his new team pays him which will likely be the minimum. Of course, if the Dodgers were willing to take a bath on all that money, he must be done like dinner.
  15. What Wilner is saying isn't really different from what a lot of people on this board said. I don't think it's so obvious that he's being insincere here. Hard to tell because he's such a tool but he's not the only one calling it an overpay so meh.
  16. Running out of options for 2015. I suppose he could come in and compete for a job. Better be a MiLB contract though. I'd rather run with Izturis for a month or two than sign Beckham to a MLB contract.
  17. Especially since the guy he was yelling at is reputed to be a huge dbag himself.
  18. Which means a whale's vagina.
  19. Or maybe Correa starts his career at 3B à la Manny Machado. Nice problem to have if you're the Astros.
  20. You're right. I thought he at least had a favourable split but not even. He's gross from both sides.
  21. Sorry. I've had Toscano on the mind lately.
