Someone OTB pointed out a while back that he has a similar injury to what Votto had and it took Votto a while to start producing like his old self again. There's reason to think that a) he's not quite himself and he's been pressing as a response to this and that's compounding the problem. There are reasons for cautious optimism and patience. -

Sure there's a silver lining but you said he "wanted" what's happening now. Just because there's a positive for him doesn't mean he wants it. As IW made pretty clear, what happens this year doesn't really impact his ability to put his mark on the team next year. He'll have to do that regardless. -

Signing a free agent literally means paying him more than anyone else would. That's the game and some of the people who call for the Jays to play that game aggressively will be the first to complain when it starts becoming obvious that no one else would pay the player the same money even though that's the whole reason the player is here in the first place. Anyhooo... Martin is pretty low on my list of short term concerns for the Jays. I don't think anything is wrong with him offensively. Just looks like a garden variety slump to me. A lot of his best PAs have led to poor outcomes which is bound to happen from time to time.

Yeah he has star player privileges. That much isn't in doubt. Heck, given everyone's contract situations, he pretty much IS the franchise. -
Can't even rule out a Pacers comeback.

With the impending free agency of Bautista and Encarnacion, they were going to have to make changes anyways so I don't see what's so great about not winning in the interim and since the Martin and Tulo deals aren't going anywhere, it's not like a full rebuild is even possible. There's no reason for this team to be in anything other than win-now mode and even next year should be more about a re-tooling in a more sustainable way than tearing it down.
