    Good lord do the Rockies look stupid. Could have had Trumbo or EE for less money than what they gave Desmond to play 1B.

    Yeah that's what I was getting at. Zeke sucks. To me he's a 5th OF in the National League. I'm starting to talk myself in to Upton in LF full-time. Take the good defense and baserunning and hope the bat is 90 wRC+ or higher. Put Zeke on the bench as the 4th OF and Pompey in AAA. If Upton falters, call up Pompey. Give Pearce some LF starts with Smoak at 1B too. Start Zeke as little as possible but he can be used to pinch run, pinch hit/bunt and as a defensive replacement for Bautista, that's not a bad role for him really.

    I'll be interested to see the numbers on that. I actually quite like him as long as he's being paid appropriately as an all-power, no walk 1B. Teams usually miscast him as an OF for some reason. I guess with Kim, Jones and Smith in the OF he'll see more time at DH.

    In 2016 yes, in 2015 he was very solid. But given that Zeke is his platoon partner his splits may not matter because he can't hit at all. Upton is likely a better defensive player and baserunner on top of it.

    Yeah that could help. I think Jonah Keri has some credibility now to carry a little weight with these Hall of Fame votes. He might have his eye on Edgar Martinez though from what I've gathered. Walker is Canadian baseball royalty and deserving of the Hall though. Probably the best Canadian player other than Fergie Jenkins?

    Maybe Shatkins thinks Melvin Upton is better than we are giving him credit for? If he plays more like he did when he was with the Padres and puts up a 90 wRC+ (he was 109 and 99 in two different seasons with them) to go with good baserunning and defense he'd be a perfectly fine option as a full-time starter and #9 hitter. That'd get him north of 1.5 WAR which would be fine. Perhaps the Jays think he can do that and are willing to risk 0 dollars on it instead of paying Brandon Moss 10 million or so for the same value.

    s*** Lou Whitaker fell off the ballot yet IMO Vizquel has a legit shot. Whitaker was far better.

    I've been saying this all offseason. Nothing they were doing or saying was indicating that they were going to get another OF. It's kind of infuriating too because it's such an easy way to upgrade the team. I guess they just don't have the resources anymore or they are comfortable with what they've got compared to what's on the market. I'm still hopeful one of two things happens as it appears that a trade for Puig or someone big like that is a pipe dream. (1) They sign Moss to a Colby Rasmus type deal or (2) Pompey shows up to ST and impresses and wins the job and puts up 1.5+ WAR. I guess my one other hope which seems like a longshot is that Upton's tenure with the Jays last year was just a blip on his road to being a useful player again as he put up 3 WAR in roughly 180 games as a Padre. The projections hate him but it's not unfathomable that he could put up 1.5 WAR.

    What does everyone think of next year? Only 3 guys this year so that doesn't do s*** to clear the current logjam. Next year will be even worse. Chipper Jones, Jim Thome, Scott Rolen, Andruw Jones and Omar Vizquel join the ballot and will get consideration. Chipper is a lock, Thome should get in eventually. Rolen should probably get in but I don't know if he will. Andruw Jones is an interesting case. 98-2006 was a great period but he fell off a cliff fast. Vizquel shouldn't get a whiff of the HoF but my guess is that he gets in eventually. Not really sure.

    Never underestimate the amount of frivolous legalese that a room full of contract attorneys can come up with.

    You're preaching to the choir. Zeke sucks. But what I would do and what I think will happen are two different things.

    Yeah he's probably right. I think Smoak probably gets a lot of AB's in a platoon with Pearce at 1B as well. Will 800+ AB's from Upton, Zeke and Smoak sink our chances at a WC?

    For Walker to have a chance we need to clear the logjam. The sooner Hoffman, Bonds, Clemens, Schilling, etc. get in the better the chance he has.

    I wish Hoffman would have just gotten in. Get it over with and clear the logjam some more. The writers who submitted blank ballots may have sunk his ship.

    So would you vote for Billy Wagner then too? He's the Larry Walker to Hoffman's Vlad Guerrero IMO.

    Vlad a first ballot HoFer and Larry Walker isn't even getting close. What a joke. Hoffman is horrible. Is he the worst Hall of Famer? He's got to be up there.

    Yeah you basically just restated what I said (I just restated what ECJF said anyway) and got all the likes for it. lol But I'll challenge the notion that he's a perfect fit anyway. I just mean that to begin the season with no injuries he's slotted in as the starting 1B, a position he should be fine at but one that he doesn't have much experience at. It also pushes the old and oft-injured Steve Pearce to his worse position in LF (with 1B being his best). I don't think everyone should be so gung-ho about Pearce in the OF as they appear to be. Especially with Bautista back in the fold.

    Yeah on paper Valbuena isn't the perfect fit but between Bautista, Tulo, Travis, Pearce, etc. there are plenty of ways to get him AB's.

    Yeah well Alford just finished up A-Ball so be prepared to ride that platoon until 2018 at the earliest. lol
